My grasp of Spanish is close to zero, which does not help when investigating early (1916) motoring events in Spain. I have been reading reports of the first "kilometro lanzado" in 1916.

Google translate isn't all that helpful ("kilometre thrown"). My English speaking brain would like to interpret this as "flying kilometre" but I have my doubts. Could a Spanish speaker enlighten me, please? Is this a standing start sprint?

Thanks in anticipation,

Stuart

It's a timed run over one kilometer with a flying start.

Thank you, Michael, this is most reassuring. I am amazed that my brain interpreted correctly! Much appreciated.

stuartu,

Regarding the translation, Michael is totally right.

Am not sure, however, that the first kilómetro lanzado was run in 1916. Haven't checked previous races, but we have (for instance) the 'Copa Barcelona', held in Vilassar de Mar on June 8, 1911:

Thank you, Narcis, you are right of course. The fault is mine - I had been reading a report of the first such event to be organised in Bilbao - but I did not say so. Apologies!

I have been investigating the motoring career of Ignacio Zubiaga Aldecoa. There may be more questions....

Stuart
