If Hamilton was that much quicker, why not wait until the main straight to get him? Boggles the mind

Verstappen was pulling away and he wanted to win.

If this was without the championship on the line 1000 % he wouldnt go for it

By that time Max would have disappeared, Lewis wanted to win. Sounds crazy but that is what drives these sort of champions, an unrelentless will to win even if a win seems out of question. That's why he's one of the Greatest ever.

Looks like Hamilton is too far away to make the move IMO

Though, funny that both admit fault to some extent lol

I don’t see how people can’t blame Lewis. 99/100 he wouldn’t even go for that divebomb but there was only one lap left. He took a huge risk and cost Albon the podium. Deserves a penalty

He probably wouldn’t have got him, but yeah I get you. He could’ve had a second instead of a possible 7th if they do apply penalties.

The onboard is obvious. Albon took a very normal racing line, Hamilton dive bomb was never on.

The titles are in the bag, now he can take risks like LEC, VET. VES do every race without consequences. Happens and this time it went wrong.

Albon left the door open and turned into Hamilton. Albon penalty IMHO.

Seriously? He left the door open, but 100% could not see Ham coming.

Its only a normal racing line if you don't have someone trying to pass you, which is why I think it was a touch naive on Albon's part.

Was gonna say racing incident from the outside but the onboards make it Hamilton. The line he takes guarantees contact.

Given the circumstances, anything worse than 1st was worthless to him I guess.

Leaving the door open, isn't saying that the guy behind can just linger with a small part of the car inside and demand room. Either need to actually do a move, or don't do a move.

I feel for Albon a bit but this aspect is hilarious to me in light of the whole initial ‘he admitted it so CASE CLOSED’ thing.

The outcome of the racing incident shouldn't impact the verdict of the investigation. Albon took the corner way too wide on entry. Every driver would have stuck their nose in.

We have seen this type of move plenty of times, and to my memory, most of the times it´s a penalty for the driver going for the too ambitious overtake. Even in today´s race.

BUT/HAM Hockenheim 2014 - same incident, same "perpetrator", deemed racing incident.

Albon took a crazy wide line into the corner, especially considering HAM was only a handful of tenths behind..

But Ricciardo magnussen was exactly the same, also Ricciardo locked up (like Hamilton) So if the one is 5 seconds the other is too.

Just a racing incident.

Funny to see some people demanding a penalty and I won't be surprised if some would want Lewis to be disqualified for the season for this incident 🙄

They took less then 10 minutes for that. Could have done that before the podium ceremonies.

5 sec!

Albon judged to be on the normal line. Ham is now 7th.

Would he, the Mercedes couldn't outdrag the toro roso.

Incorrect Hamilton lost a few km top end because of front wing endplate damage after the collision .

He would've overtaken Albon easily because of his pace plus fresher tyres .

It was a racing incident,

Yes Albon was taking the racing line but driving that line gives the faster car behind a massive open door to go for because the standard line is unusually wide due to its camber .

Albon should've been smarter and be more aware that 6X wdc Lewis was behind him and not Kubica thus taken a more tighter defensive line into the corner. Lewis will always go for the gap if the door is wide open and opportunity arises.

Slightly OT but I have no idea why Albon gets hyped by the media? not proven world class pace deserving of a top team, he is error prone with incidents almost every race and massively outpaced by Max .Why does he have a race seat in arguably the 2nd fastest team on the grid?

AA drove like he was the only car on the track - not surprising as he is a rookie ... instead he knew he had LH in close attendance and not only completely lost track of where LH was but turned in on LH after opening the door.

But it would be harsh to penalise AA... it was naive rather than deliberate + LH should have expected something like this from the rookie and not been so optimistic ... racing incident.

Edit - stewards need to go to specsavers

Yeah, should have been 10 to bring him alongside Albon. ;)

I wonder why they didn't do it in the ready room like they did before against Verstappen. This was a slamdunk penalty compared to earlier moves in the race.

Not really. It was a sensible position.

The same stewards gave Leclerc a fine for unsafe release in Germany. Let that sink in.

Stewards quote 'Albon was on the normal racing line"   slam dunk kills all the bs about the door being wide open.

MAG/RIC is much different. MAG didn't leave a car's width. ALB did. Sky agreed with the racing incident outcome. RIC was a typical divebomb, HAM wasn't.

Not sure there's much more to add.

Lewis admitted fault.. and got a penalty.

Kind of think that Albon was a little silly leaving that open like that given the context but he IS a rookie.

I think it's a racing incident and I hope there will be no penalty.
Had Albon seen Hamilton coming, I think he would have given him some room on the inside and there wouldn't have been any contact.
But Albon wasn't looking in his mirror and wasn't expecting a move. I think he should have.

Edit: Apparently the stewards disagree!
