The 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be the 198th and last F1 race of the 2010s.

(Yes, technically the decade started in 2011 and ends in 2020, but indulge in the symbolism …)

198 races crowning 3 world champions, 12 race winners and 25 podium finishers – but which are your favourites?

Bahrain-start-1.jpg

Race #1 - Bahrain 2010 - We've come a long way since then...

Inspired by Phillip Horton's thought-provoking tweet, can you narrow it down to the best 10 races?

Above you will find a shortlist of 27 races, split into two polls (forum rules). Initially my shortlist was around 40 races, but I've tried to trim it down so it isn't massively overwhelming. I've tried to pick the best of the best. Apologies if you think I've missed a classic! It's only a bit of fun, so please post your personal favourites below, even if they are excluded from the poll.

I have tried to ignore races defined by individual performances and instead chosen exciting, dramatic and iconic races.

Original 42 race shortlist:

Spoiler

Please pick 10 races only across both questions. Post below to see if you can order them 1st to 10th!

If you need a little help, each shortlisted race comes with a brief synopsis to jog your memory.

Forgive me, Abu Dhabi, but I don't think the final 2019 race is likely to feature.

I thought it would be nice to reminisce the highs, lows, thrills and spills before we round out the 2010s. May the best races win...

A decade can be any 10 year period you like, there's no issue with covering the 2010s in this manner.

However, including races from 2000 in a list of best races of the 21st century would be worthy of repeated slaps in the face with a wet kipper.

Pretty much nobody employs this kind of "historically correct" count for such decade summaries though. For example, if we were talking about best albums of the 1990s (*cough* OK Computer *cough*) we wouldn't start at 1991 and end at 2000.

I figured the forum would be too quiet, tbh.

And I think it's just a nice topic to build up to Abu Dhabi.

I also couldn't get the idea out of my head as soon as I saw the tweet and I've been furiously drafting and redrafting shortlists for the last week and wanted to get it off my mind

Brazilian GP 2012, definitely.

That was such an emotional rollercoaster even though I was indifferent to whether Vettel or Alonso wins the championship. After Vettel's many mishaps it looked like Alonso would take it but somehow Vettel managed to get up to 6th. The rain made the whole race very unpredictable, so I think it would have been high on my list even without the championship fight.

2 teams and 3 drivers won titles. Probably the lowest ever?

China 2010, China 2011, China 2012, Valencia 2012 and Germany 2019 are the ones that stuck in my memory the most as very enjoyable races. Very much going on in all of these.

China 2011 is probably the only race I've watcehd that you could think of 5 different possible winners with around 15 laps to go.

China 2012 really had a lot of great wheel-to-wheel fights between turns 11 and 16

Those are four depressing statistics.
- too many races in a decade to my taste
- only 3 WDCs
- only 12 race winners
- again only 25 podium finishers

There actually have been a good number of good races this decade, and there are a number of those in the poll.

Germany 2011 will always have a special place in my heart.

Me too. A fantastic three way fight between three great drivers in different teams.

------------------------------

One not in the poll but I would think deserves to be there was Japan 2011, which I would consider to be Button's best ever victory. He might have pressured Vettel into a mistake in Canada, but he simply outraced him at Suzuka.

We can have some less depressing statistics. This decade is the only one where six existing world champions have raced against each other for a season. That was 2012 (Vettel, Button, Hamilton, Alonso, Schumacher, Raikkonen). It's also the only decade where two four-time world champions have raced against each other, and on top of that they fought for the title too. That was Vettel vs Hamilton last year.

Well, yes. That does make it somewhat special. But what's even more special, is that I vividly remember certain great races this decade. Something I can't say that I can name as many during the '00s.

Germany 2011 and 2019, Canada 2011, Brazil 3012, 2016 and 2019 are examples I can name already from the top of my head.

Germany 2011 was fantastic. Sad to see Turkey 2010 missing which was a superb race in my opinion. Belgium 2010 was also notable for being quite crazy, with Hamilton nearly crashing on the last lap in wet conditions.

Yeah 2000 is definitely not the 90s but one might refer to the decade 1991 to 2000 even if they wouldn't call it that.

F1 (at least the world championship) has the advantage of starting in 1950. So it's first decade was 1950 to 1959 and it lines up nicely in that regard.

Canada 2011 because it was epic and Spain 2016 because a dual Merc DNF was a breath of fresh air.

Brazil 2016 gets less love than Germany 2019.... ha! I suspect Germany 2019 is one of those things that has become hugely over-rated in F1 fandom.... a bit like Spa, or Hakkinen's pass on Schumacher there.

Germany 2019 was very unpredictable, but did we see many astonishing overtakes? They didn't leave an impression with me in any case...

I'm surprised Baku 2017 isn't mentioned often, that was a race with many memorable moments. Baku 2018 will also be memorable for me for a long time due to the RB battle.

Brasil 2012 - I was there on the grandstands on the straight after the Senna S. That race was incredibly hard to follow live on the track, I had no clue what was going on all the time :D

Surprised that Abu Dhabi 2010 isn't mentioned. Sure, it wasn't a great race in its own right, but it was very memorable for me given all the circumstances. Watching Alonso getting so stuck behind Petrov still is very fresh on my mind!

Germany 2019 was the only race in the last 2 or 3 years that properly excited me. But who knows, maybe it's because the current era is so bad and it only looks good by comparison and had that race been held somewhere in 2012, I wouldn't even remember it being that great.

I do think it was a very good race anyways. Lots of plot twists. You couldn't have predicted what would happen beforehand, which, in my opinion, is the essence of a good race. I take that over a race with some good overtakes but predictable outcome any day of the week.

Abu Dhabi 2010 (and its polar opposite, Canada 2010) are probably the most important races of the decade, as they inspired the template of high-degradation tyres and DRS, which have remained ever since.

But the thread title is "The Best F1 Races" and not "The Most Memorable F1 Races" so it shouldn't be that surprising. :p

Fair point!

But then I would rather start trying to find consensus on what elements make a F1 race 'the best'.

Well, I think Brazil last week was much better. The battle for P1 was until the final stages the entire time open, Germany wasnt. Germany was defined by bad driving standards more than anything. While we had them in Brazil too we also saw great overtakes, something we didnt saw in Germany at all. The drama was also much better, and the outcome (from the underdogs perspective) too

It's not even close to me, but that's probably the wet races bonus.

All that happened in Germany was a few cars going off and a few safety cars (too many). That was it. Before that happened, and after, there was no actual decent on-track action. In fact when the track dried out it allowed those with better cars to streak away or easily make their way to the front. So apart from wondering who would go off next, zero tension. Still, it was good that Kvyat made it to the podium. The demolition derby element is maybe high on the list of what excites people. The best race in years, or the best this season... not anywhere close.

I disagree. Some guys gambled with the tyres towards the end of the race and there was tension about who would be able to hang onto what position. Also one of the very few races in recent years in which someone outside top3 cars- Hulk- was in the mix for much of the race.

It might be subjective, but as I said- no other race in recent years excited me as much.

While Canada 2010 was a really good race, it wasn't simply because of tyre degradation. It was the unpredictability of it (did it rain over the weekend?). It worked as a one-off quirky race but to try and build the model of F1 on it was a really stupid idea.

Probably either Canada 2011 or Brazil 2012 for me. The former was absolutely mad. The latter also absolutely mad and with the added bonus of a title fight between two men at the top of their game.

I cannot really pick tbh. Many entertaining races, but my view on them is probably a bit too biased... From the recent races I enjoyed the ones where RB did well most, but I wouldnt automatically qualify those the best F1 races. Brazil 2016, China 2018, Brazil 2018, Austria 2019 & Brazil 2019 spring to mind as very entertaining. Seems that Brazil is very high on my list in general :).

Pre 2014, Canada 2011 & Brazil 2012 spring to mind most.

Looking at this list it seems 2013 is not really a season to remember... :)

Most of this races were great because either there was rain, safety cars, it was a title decider or there was great racing through the field, but I find amazing how Fernando put Valencia 2012 in the top 5 of the decade almost single-handedly.

Monaco 2014. First points for any of the new teams that joined in 2010 - and in the end, also the only team of those new ones that scored before they all went bust.

Australia was good because it looked like Red Bull weren't very good in the race (plus Kimi winning), Bahrain had some memorable moments but genuinely can't remember the others...

In recent years, for me it's Baku 2017 just because it seemed like it was gonna really kick the Hamilton Vettel rivalry into gear (it didn't, but I was excited at the time)

I fully understand that.  And might I add I've infected 3 other people with the same affliction and they are cursing me out about it because it's such a time sink!  I told them I'm just a carrier...Patient Zero is on the forums!! :rotfl:

Always interesting to see what people rate, but for me it's a pretty depressing list, if this is the best of an entire decade. And, the first half seems very Button-biased. Reading this without any prior knowledge, you'd think Button was the greatest racer of those years, when arguably his wins only appear because they were always unexpected. I'd nominate Vettel's drive in Bahrain in '18, and Leclerc's win in Monza this year, but I'm only interested in Ferrari.

He drove a great race but it was still very safety car dependent.

Abu Dhabi 2010 (and its polar opposite, Canada 2010) are probably the most important races of the decade, as they inspired the template of high-degradation tyres and DRS, which have remained ever since.

Indeed. I think the 2013 British Grand Prix was also important in this regard as it seemed to draw the line under the mad tyre experimentation that had characterized Pirelli's stint as sole supplier up to that point.

Korea 2010. Disaster as a webber fan but then madness as vettel pulls over. Championship still alive!

(I wish webbers win in hungary 2010 was included. A good chunk of qually laps to snatch it from vettel).

Canada 2011 - stayed up at crazy am in the morning watching the whole thing and loving the weirdness.

Valencia 2012 - was cool to see Alonso win and cruise around with the flag. I'm always happy when a home crowd gets their dream.

Brazil 2012 for vettels comeback drive.

Bahrain 2014 - maybe things won't be so boring after all lol.

Canada 2014 - Danny Ric new race winner!

Hungary 2014 - Danny ric doubles down - my first trip to London and went to check out that F1 sports bar near camden, jet something? Great race and atmosphere.

Spain 2016 - max RB debut and win. Ric on an inferior strategy losing the win, but Max impressive holding off a ferrari fir the win. Ominous.

Baku 2017 for the madness.

Austria 2019 - Max makes the orange army go nuts at red bulls home track, great stuff.

If that race had been in the poll I would've picked it! Malaysia 2012 is probably the only other really great race missing from the list.

It's interesting to me to look back through these races and see why some stand out for me while some don't. In most of the ones I remember, total chaos was involved.

Most of the 2010 races were rather stale and predictable, which is funny because I have memories of 2010 as a great season. Canada and Korea that year stand out for being utter pandemonium, though. I was awake until 5:40 AM US time to see Korea reach its conclusion... one wonders what happened to the Sebastian Vettel who climbed from his car smiling at the cameras that race in spite of knowing he'd probably just lost the championship.

You can't really recount 2011 without recounting Canada, which is probably the ultimate as far as races you expect to see featured in 'best ever' compilations decades from now. I don't remember many other races for being notable that year except Hungary, when it seemed like anyone in a top car was going to win, and then Button did. I also liked China that year, which I remember for everyone pitting what felt like every ten laps and some unfortunate Lotus driver leading a DRS train of like nine cars down the front straight, only to be overtaken left right and center once the tyres hit the infamous 'cliff'.

2012 had loads of good races. I mentioned Malaysia above (the day a Sauber almost won!), but others missing from the poll are China (Mercedes scores the first of its 3,000 impending victories) and Spain (wtf). I must also confess that I didn't pick Valencia 2012 for Alonso winning (more on this later) as much as I did for the memory of Schumacher holding off a train of DRS-enabled cars for several laps to hang onto third. Abu Dhabi was surprisingly entertaining that year as well, as was the USGP and the finale in Brazil, which is probably only equalled by the 2008 race there as far as thrilling conclusions go.

From here on out it sort of becomes a haze. 2013 was dire as far as good races went, but it did have Silverstone, which sticks out in my memory for Steve Matchett repeatedly shouting, "ANOTHER LEFT REAR!!" every time a tyre went down. I miss your enthusiasm, Steve. Please come back. Maybe to Indycar (European Nigerian Indycar viewers may know him as C'MON SON guy).

The only good race I remember from 2014 was Hungary, which I also remember as being similar to its 2011 edition. I also remember it because even though I was president of the Anti-Alonso Club at the time I was hardcore cheering him on. While I have since warmed to him and come to respect his abilities, I've never agreed that the Ferraris Alonso drove were sh!tboxes and I'm still skeptical of the mythology surrounding his performances in them (the Valencia 2012 race in particular being peak Nandomania). That being said, their 2014 car was certifiably one of the most sh!t Ferraris in a long time (in terms of looks and performance), and that bastard damn near won a race in it, in the damp, holding off a Red Bull and two freakin' world-conquering 2014-edition Mercedes while on 300-lap old tyres. How that doesn't rate higher than inheriting a win from a failed Renault and safety car help is beyond me. Take a bow, Fernando.

After that it gets REALLY hazy for me... I confess the only real standouts on the list for me are Max Verstappen winning on his Red Bull debut after Hamilton and Rosberg have a disagreement over where on the track the other's car should be in Spain, 2016, and then Germany and Brazil this year for being absolutely entropic–Germany for the Mercedes pitlane clusterf*** and Lance Stroll of all people leading a few laps, and Brazil for Vettel and Leclerc doing their best Hamilton/Rosberg impersonation and Pierre Gasly out-dragging a Mercedes in a Toro Rosso.

F1 has changed a lot over the years. Maybe it's just because I've been watching for so long, but while I can still tell you everything that happened in nearly every race from 2003 to 2013, I can barely remember a damn race from 2014 onwards. Something about the V6T change just made it less... memorable for me. Weirdly enough the ugly-ass cars they had from 2009-2013 produced some of the most memorable races since I've been watching. Never ever would've thought then that I'd say this, but even though the mid-90's to late-00's are my favorite era of F1 it would be nice to have more races from that 2009-2013 formula.

It's been an interesting mix. Let's hope that the next ten years are more consistently good, at least. Hopefully I'll be around to see them all.
