A crowd of us used to meet up at his bike bits shop (Top Gear iirc) on St Thomas's Road in Derby every Saturday morning in the late 60's.
Long time commentator at Darley Moor too

MotoGP.com also has a short message of condolence:

The whole MotoGP™ family has been deeply saddened by the recent passing of the legendary Chris Carter. An esteemed broadcaster, commentator, journalist and author, Carter left an indelible mark on both MotoGP™ and two-wheeled motorsport.

One of the most recognisable voices in the world of motorcycle racing, Carter’s passion for the sport saw him dedicate a lifetime to it. He was also a key inspiration in the formation of IRTA and a great friend to many, on track and off, ensuring his memory will live on and continue to make an incredible contribution to MotoGP™ and motorcycle racing.

Before my time but if you're looking for old bike racing on Youtube you can't miss his voice. He seemed warm and was clearly immensely knowledgeable.
