My lone contribution today for number 111 in what has been a fantastic thread to be part of. So many wonderful photos and so many very pleasant board pals that I've made along the way. Pod, (my cat), says hi, for one day only. He's back in his own domain tomorrow.

Anyhoo, having looked at what may or may not be available from Le Mans, The only 111 that I could find half reasonable pictures of is the Spice SE88C driven by Gordon Spice, Ray Bellm, and Pierre de Thoisy in !988. A fine drive took them to the top step in C2 and a 13th place overall.

Sandro Munari on his way to winning the 1973 Tour Auto. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first international win of a Stratos.

There were a couple of wins earlier in 1973, Munari winning the Firestone Rally in Spain and Andruet winning a French event.  There were also some crashes and mechanicals as well.

And one more for today. Sunbeam Alpine, Rally de Monte Carlo, 1960.

Rune Backlund and Nils Falk who finished 31st.

We still have tomorrow guys, day 112 after the scheduled start in Melbourne!

And there's still time for the Austrian GP to be postponed, giving us another seven days.

Why don't we continue this thread?

If the practice days are anything to go by what we can expect from this season, this thread running on might bring us way more surprises that the actual F1 season we so eagerly awaited and created this thread for....

You can always count up or down to a non-mercedes car winning the championship. That should keep the thread going a couple more years.

There is this 1965 documentary called Mountain Legend where a Ferrari 250 GTO has a fitting number. Sadly it also shows a damaged face.
To me, the 250 GTO is a car which is very pretty. But I never understood the hype surrounding it. A period like Muira and 911 are, to me, just as pretty.

Another one in the 1952 German GP sequence, Belgian driver Paul Frère in his HWM-Alta. He had to retire the car in the first lap with a broken gearbox.

Well the thread was supposed to end today but I’ve renamed it as we’ve reached the first race.

In my opinion, this thread has run it course and it should finish today the moment the Austrian GP starts.

It's been an amazing entertainment for more than seven months and its an an incredible fact that it has been at the top ten (and even top five) threads of this forum for so long.

However, there are two things than now play against its popularity:

  • There will be plenty of activity on regular threads, once the season is rolling, which will probably relegate this thread to page two (in fact, it already happened yesterday)
  • It becomes more and more difficult to find cars as the number grows (or, more precisely, it becomes more and more difficult to find suitable images of them), which could lead to less and less posts.

Just like great racing drivers, I think it's better to retire at the peak of your powers than languishing for years at the back of the grid.

DB-Panhard.jpg

The DB-Panhard of Wiley Reid at the 1958 Spring Sprint Sports Car Road Races at Virginia International Raceway. He finished second in his class. DB stands for Deutsch-Bonnet, a small French producer of racers of petite cylindrée with very pushed aerodynamics, a tradition which lasted well into the eighties with WM.

Réné Bonnet and Charles Deutsch parted ways in the early sixties, each developing into separate racing outfits. The Réné Bonnet cars were the genesis of Matra Sports nonetheless and Charles Deutsch was later involved on the small Alpine cars which took part at the 24 hours of Le Mans in the mid sixties.

And that my friends is my last post in this thread. If it continues to exist, I'll sure have a look and I may post some cars, but not on a regular basis.

Thank you to all who have had the patience to look at and read my posts and excuse me for my mistakes and inconveniences.

Whether the thread stops now, or continues, it's carried us through the race-less period with fabulous pictures, informative comment and a lot of good-natured chat. Thank you to Thread Emperor Ivanhoe, to Superswede, milestone 11, DeKnyff, Amphicar and many others who have provided entertainment quite unlike that available elsewhere.

You're not getting rid of me that easily. ;)

Useless Le Mans fact No. 112, there has never been one.

There was though at the Targa Florio in 1955 and it was driven by Fangio/Kling who finished 2nd behind Moss/Collins in the sister Mercedes 300 SLR.

Totally agree with DeKnyff, this thread has had it’s time. We could go on forever, since we are entering the Mille Miglia terrain, but at some time it has to come to an end and this thread deserves better than to just die slowly and sink to page 2, 3, 4 and further.

Thanks to all contributing to this thread with honorable mentions to DeKnyff, SuperSwede (hope he’s okay), milestone 11, Amphicar, 68targa, Beri, PayasYouRace and Henri, BRG, Collombin and Sterzo for all the useful rectifications and additions. I’ll sign off with my beloved Targa Florio and three of my favourite sports cars.

Ford-Zephyr.jpg

The Ford Zephyr of Danish crew Robert Nellemenn - Mogen Skårring at the Monte Cralo rally of 1958. They finished 10th.

Maybe it is fitting to end with this picture, which is alarmingly close to a picture of my very first rally - a picture that however was sadly never taken.

OK, it wasn't the Monte Carlo, just the CADMOC -Croydon and District MC's novice rally - and it was only a Ford Consul rather than a Zephyr, but it had a similar motley array of spotlights as well as a bench seat and no seat belts (which made it interesting on the corners.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread which has shown this Forum at its very best during a difficult hiatus.

I have no idea what car this is, but I want one. Anyone know?

It's a Chevrolet Corvette I think, heavily modified. Someone more into American cars than I am will know.

I think it’s a Chevy from the ARCA series, but I’m sure we have some American members who can provide you with more details.

That is a late model WOO car.  Here is another picture of that car, and its number 45 too!:

Outlaw-SLM-Jukasa-24-Tyler-Roahrig-2018.

They are very popular on American short tracks, both asphalt and dirt.

I missed this at the time, but it calls for some corrections: this is a pavement late model car, Camaro based, not Corvette. It might be correct that it could be from an ARCA-sanctioned late model class as the photo was taken at Toledo (OH) Speedway. It is not WOO, which is dirt only. Late models are popular on U.S. short tracks, both dirt and paved, but entirely and drastically different cars have evolved. Below are links to a heat race, showing a good example of typical dirt late models, along with a link to a photo of a field of WoO late models: EDIT: Turns it the driver is Frankie Jiovani, in an ARCA Outlaw Late Model car.

https://www.youtube....h?v=GX9Uvl3GfBI

https://en.wikipedia..._Dirt_Track.jpg

And, yes, they are quite cool, both dirt and pavement-style. In their heyday full fields of cars raced weekly at local short tracks, with major events attracting top drivers from a large part of the country.
