Hyundai is moving away from the idea of participating in the WTCR and 2021.
The two Hyundai teams BRC and the Engstler team were quite uncompetitive in the 2020 WTCR season.Last year's champion finished the year as 13, and team boss Andrea Adamo claims that Hyundai is "very far" from the decision to participate in the next season."We can't confirm anything yet. The coronavirus pandemic has created a problem for everyone, and it is not clear to us what will happen to the WTCR next year, ”says Adamo. He again criticized the Balance of Performance this year, which is the only reason why all cars of the South Korean manufacturer skipped one round of the series."We don't know what the organizer intends to do in terms of regulations, and the price is quite high. We will be forced to cut costs and invest smarter ", adds the Italian."This year it was organized without respecting the rules, anyone could come and that upsets us quite a bit. If the series was managed with a clear focus on costs, that would not be the case. And that's not a pandemic. "Rumors that the "Hyundai i30 N" will cancel the "Elantra" in the WTCR are strongly denied by Adamao."Elantra" is a model that is very important to us, but above all for our customers in America and Asia, and only then in Europe. There are enough markets and series around the world where we can show the performance of that car, we don't need WTCR for that ”.“If the WTCR price is acceptable, we can support customers with our drivers. If not, customers can participate for their money in whatever championship they want, and I will be satisfied because of that. "Adamo also referred to the recent promotion of the electric TCR car presented by Hyundai.“I think the future of ETCR is bright. When you start a project from scratch, as Hyundai did with an electric car, it is always very difficult. However, I think that they have already shown that they did the job properly. We will see what happens with traditional cars and we will react quickly. "

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we don't hace any WTCR in 2021. We only got a 20-something car grid this year because of the cheaper Europe-only season. So far Hyundai could well pull out, Lynk & Co have stated they don't know if they will commit to two cars or four, some of the smaller entries should be gone (Gilles Magnus' Audi, Romeo Ferraris Alfas). Zengo run three cars but only one with factory support (Azcona) and Cupra seem to be focusing on ETCR. Honda is supposed to go on with its four cars and don't know about the DHL Audis.

As far as I know all brands from VW AG don't have factory support.

Volkswagen Motorsport announced that it would cease manufacturer support for the Golf GTI TCR along with all petrol-powered motorsport programmes, though the Golf GTI TCR would still be available to private teams. This announcement came along with the shift of the brand's policy towards electric racing.
Audi opted not to introduce a successor to the RS 3 LMS for 2020, while also ending their manufacturer support in the series, though the RS 3 LMS would still be available to private teams.
SEAT Cupra announced on 3 April 2020 that they would not offer manufacturer support to any team in the 2020 Championship, though the new León Competición TCR would still be available to private teams.
I was right.

Watching the IMSA Pilot Sport Challenge leaves me to wonder how much boost and weight breaks you'd need to get TCR on level pace with GT4, and then you could just run the championship as a free-for-all. Not very traditional, but hell, it'd be more fun than the team orders tedium that WTCC/WTCR has been for many a year.

Judging by the 24 hrs of Dubai, they are on about the same pace, GT4 is faster on the straights, TCR is faster in the corners.

In IMSA the faster GT4s are definitely quicker over a lap than the fastest TCRs by a small but significant margin. I think giving the TCR's probably another 30-40hp and maybe letting take 100kg off would probably make them quite close.

I was right.
Azcona didn't score for the WTCR Trophy for being considered manufacturer supported. I guess Cupra was paying his salary.

At the moment, I am feeling seriously negative about the WTCR after the dreadful farce of the Aragon Motorworld weekends. The abuse of track limits was so extreme that I just switched off halfway through race 1. I looked again at race 1 of the second weekend, but it was the same - they were using anywhere piece of tarmac they chose to and there was no enforcement. So I switched off again. Running a bit wide is one thing, but when a whole train of cars runs far beyond the kerbs lap after lap, it is past a joke. I shall stick to BTCC which makes the WTCR look like a shambles. If it dies, I won't care.

No?
If you are telling me that others are just as bad, well, that isn't an excuse really. There are series where the rules ARE enforced. WTCR is not one of them and I found it impossible to watch.

With the 2020–21 season (Formula E), the championship will officially become a FIA World Championship, joining Formula One, the World Endurance Championship, the World Rally Championship, and the World Rallycross Championship.
Only WTCR is left

Yes, Spa24 had extreme level of ignoring track limits, but I found it enjoyable. I haven't noticed that it is that bad at Aragon, but after two races at MotoGP I was pretty sick of that track anyway.
