11. Either the first or second 10-lap heats of the 1967 Race of Champions. Dan Gurney (Eagle) on pole alongside John Surtees (Honda). The front row was the same for both heats.

I'm guessing #2 is Indy in 1909 or 1910, and I'm guessing car #11 jumped the start while car #8 stumbled.

Photo #4 is Louis Naudin's Sizaire-Naudin in the 1908 Grand Prix des Voiturettes at Dieppe.

I'm sure someone will identify #8 (looks like a F5000 car to me.)  What I'm really wondering about is how many TNFers are in that picture.

Best holiday wishes to everybody.  Thanks for another great year.

As LittleChris says, numbers 16 and 17 are from a trip to the north of Sweden undertaken by Von Trips and Jenkinson in 1955. DSJ recalled the trip in October 1955.

The car had finished second in a small event at Karsloga and Von Trips was required to deliver it to the Mercedes-Benz Dealer in Stockholm. He had a spare week before he had to do that so decided to take the car on a trip to the far north. DSJ jumped at the chance to accompany him.

During the trip they had two punctures. After the second, having no spare tyre the drove on the rim for 15 miles before reaching a village where they effected a temporary repair that got them to a town where they were able to purchase a replacement. Picture 17 must have been taken after the second puncture.

DSJ also told the story in Porsche Past and Present and A Passion for Motor Sport but the original is the best.

Number 8 looks like a Lotus 43 modified with a Ford V8 so presumably the aftermath of Jock Russell’s crash which wrote the car off (until it was repaired).

The Dan Gurney pic... No. 7...

Is that perhaps Dan with folks gathered around him after he ran out of fuel at Spa?

Otherwise I'd go with the Glen.

Number 12B is a 1960 Grand Prix Ferrari, identifiable by the driveshaft running from left to right across the cockpit.

There is a similar picture in Doug’s book Dino. The car is being rebuilt with 3-litre V12 engine after Neil Corner bought it in 1979.

As LittleChris says, number 14 is Derek Gardner with the wooden mock up he built while designing 001. He built this at his home in Leamington Spa but I can’t say whether the picture was taken there or at Ockham. Apparently Gardner had to sell his much loved Mk VII Bentley to make room for it.

Merry Christmas y'all, and thanks to Doug for a super effort. Great opportunity to put other parts of  the body than  the digestive tract to use at this time!

1 has to be Brooklands, and 2 Indianapolis, but way before my time. Same goes for 3 and 4, and while the Alfa in 5 is as gorgeous as any front engined sigle seater ever designed, I have no idea of driver or circuit.

6 has to be either Parkesi or a twin brother, and would that be Dragoni on the left? 7 is Gurney with wee Jimmy, but Clark has his rally jacket on which means it is not taken after both ran out of fuel at Spa in '64. The topography might suggest Watkins Glen, perhaps? 8 is a Lotus 49-ish machine with a rear subframe to hold an unfamiliar V8...it looks like Brands Hatch...and the driver would have been very lucky to walk away with that one. 9 is a collection of parts that look like some Fifties sports-racer, and the torn material of the rear section looks like fiberglass, not aluminium. American? 10 is a very fit-looking Chapman, giving lie to his nick-name of "Chunky". 11 is the front row of Race of Champions, Brands 1968, with Ginther and Gurney in the Eagle-Weslakes sandwiching Surtees in the Honda. 12 looks like Unser and Andretti taking helicopter lessons from a very Schlesseresque-looking person, while 12B...well, rear suspension initially suggested Lotus but front ditto does not, and as for that curved tubular ladder-type frame, ugh!  Tough one!  14 is Derek Gardner with the first Tyrrell tub wooden mock-up, probably at his house. 15 is an interesting monocoque with rear "horns" tapering towards the gearbox bulkhead. The size of the steering wheel suggests early Sixties, and it does seem to have rocker-arm front upper wishbones. BRP Indy effort? 16 is from the von Trips/Jenks journey way up north in Scandinavia, delivering the 300SL. The "BP Bensin" suggests either Sweden or this country (Norway) but the buildings do look more Swedish, so I suggest somewhere in Lappland. As as for the LR puncture in 17,  check out the gravel roads, which were standard fare in Scandinavia at this time and well into the Seventies,in some places.

And in 18, looking for reindeer in the Alps, might I suggest Lappland would be a better place to look for them!

No. 8 - Brands Hatch, end of pit straight and into Paddock Hill on the inside of the circuit, behind the barrier is the road to between pits and paddock. Looks like late 1960's and a big event by the size of the crowd. I was probably out in the countryside marshaling (no fireproof suits only a woolly jumper and jeans). The photo looks familiar, the twin oil rads are very distinctive but I can't remember any details. :(

No. 9 - Oh dear! No idea but there's enough to make three or maybe four 'originals'. Looks like something after a fire-marshals training day at Brands!

In China and wallowing in nostalgia!

24 - Montlhery - could be 1935 or 1934

I'm sure the driver of the car in No 23 has decided it's time to head for the workshop...

Since he fitted a six instead of a 4-cylinder engine he's come to the conclusion he needs front brakes too.

31. August 1947 Hamburg,  City Park Race, Sports Car Class up to 1.1 l

#4 Willy von Müller, the race winner, in a Fiat, disguised as BMW

#5 Petermax Müller came third in a Volkswagen Eigenbau, the first in a row of four or five such cars...

Pic 27 is Albert Divo in a Talbot. Montlhery. 1927 French Grand Prix.  Presumably pulling over and retiring since he did not finish. There were only 7 starters and the race lasted for 4 hours and 45 mins . An endurance race for spectators as well as drivers one supposes.

#12 :Mario Andretti and Bobby Unser getting a helicopter ride into or out of the GP or practice at either Monza or Watkins Glen in 1968.  Probably they had to rush to get on a plane to participate in  an Indycar race.   The CYNAR sponsorship on the chopper suggests it's Monza.   Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser drove for BRM and Mario was beginning a long on-and-off association with Colin Chapman at Lotus.

I think the closer of the other two is one of the three Écurie Gersac Delages (Louveau, Levegh or Achard), with Giraud-Cabantous' Talbot behind.

My opinion both cars are Delages of Écurie Gersac. Levegh is on the fore one (he had a dark cup) and Louveau - on the aft one (Louveau had a white  'mutch'). Achard's car was slightly modified and had a pear shaped radiator cowl like 'alfettas'.

I was wondering the same thing as Michael regarding the identity of the driver. I don't think that Breed entered any events in his Hudson Special until about August 1916 and, after a cursory look at my material, nothing pops out about Burman racing a Hudson Special. Given that Burman died in April 1916 at Corona, very likely that Michael is correct. As to where the photo was taken, it could have been Kansas, Iowa, Missouri.... However, Breed's Hudson Special was white and black or simply white until into the mid-1920s....

(Added) However, it certainly looks to be the sort of racing machine is use on the tracks during the era that Breed drove.

Fantastic pictures Doug !

This one comes from "Le Concours du Bidon de 5 Litres" (The 5 litres can contest). The race took place at La Ferté Bernard near Le Mans where Doctor Collières had the idea in 1920 of a simple challenge : driving the longest distance with 5 litres of petrol on a 12 km circuit around La Ferté Bernard at an average of 40 kph.

If you look at the left hand side of that Citroën windscreen, you will see the required external petrol tank.

The ACO was part of the organisation.

You are both right - that frame is indeed Neil's Dino 246/60 F1 frame during restoration by Crosthwaite & Gardiner - it had underpinned the V12-engined Logan Fow 'GTO' in New Zealand - to my mind an appallingly ugly travesty...yet still interesting.
