have a look at this pic of the F2001.

Have a look at the front wing and just above the Fedex logo there appears to be a so called Gurney Tab.

Does anyone have any idea why they are running these pieces in the front wings. Its not only Ferrari. All the other teams have similar looking devices attached to the second element of the front wing.

Any one have any ideas cause from what I know about Aerodynamics this could only only make the airflow more turbulent and hence reduce downforce ?

Don't know what a Gurney tab is to begin with. But even if I did, I don't think I would see it in a postage stamp size picture.

Gurney's are used to increase the downforce of a wing, albeit adding a bit of drag. The tab causes an increase of pressure (slowing down of air) on the upper surface, helping to reduce flow separation on the undersurface of the wing. I think...

BAR run quite large ones on their front wings, but BAR seem to stick aero appendages everywhere... Most teams as you say run Gurney's on the front wings as well as the back. Ther are often handing to add to a car at the last minute if the race start is wet, it adds downforce to help in the rain, and the you often see the mechanics ripping them off if the tracks starts to dry during the race to reduce understeer.

Hope this helps

MN: Just above the fedex sign in the front wing there seems to be a bit of metal bolted on standing up vertical.

Here is a link to an excellent description of the Gurney flap, it's invention and function from Mr. Gurney's own All American Racers website:
