It might be a bit off for me to say it, as I've never followed NASCAR that intensively, but the Winston Cup sounds so much better than anything else that followed.

I agree.  I don't know if it's due to cigarette sponsorship somehow making things sound cooler in all things related to motorsports, or that the Winston sponsorship coincided with the period in time when NASCAR wasn't just a soulless empty shell of its former self.

Perhaps because the last Winston Cup was the last non chase/playoff championship? (Also see demise of rivalries discussed earlier....)

It's sad but NASCAR (and also IndyCar) have to go this way. Otherwise there won't be any more manufactures in future...

Everybody will run EV sooner or later.

How fast change happens might depend on the reasons manufacturers are pouring money in. The reason it's happened to F1 and WEC LMP1 first is that those series are hugely subsidized by the R&D budgets of big multinationals. And the one who pays the piper calls the tune.

Is NASCAR funded that way or is it paid for by commercial sponsorship? If so it will only change when consumers and racegoers fall out of love with noisy petrol engines. Which could conceivably be never.

Tesla have big bulky cars and are an US manufacturer. Somehow I think that the ones who dislike Toyota being in NASCAR due to not being from the US would dislike Tesla as well :p

Anybody else watch Daytona practice? The up-coming ARCA race?

While EV is the way to go for consumer and professional cars, its not good for racing. Racing needs the added spectacle of engine noise, refueling and smell

Hydrogen will be the solution. No matter what the challenges and drawbacks at the moment are. Static electric energy stored in polluting and linited batteries is in no way the future.
And if we talk about niche motorsports like NASCAR, IndyCar or Formula One, even the hydrogen internal combustion engine can be a thing of the future instead of the hydrogen fuel cell.
And I repeat; I know that there is a lot of work to do before any of the two hydrogen options are valid solutions. But they will be one day.

To Hamlin's defense, that was clearly a tire going down. Nothing he could have done.
