How can this be even possible? How come Ferrari never stopped Barnard for working at Arrows while his car was still actively used in the same season when he joined Arrows?
It is very strange.
Were there other similar cases in history?

Southgate: Shadow and Arrows in 1978 ???I just found out that the Ferrari F310B and Arrows A18 that competed in the 1997 F1 season were both designed by the same designer - John Barnard.

The A18 was already racing by the time Barnard started working with Arrows, so credit to him is a bit misplaced. I believe it was a Frank Dernie car.
Ferrari weren’t in a position to stop John from working for Areoed because it was technically his UK based company that was working for Ferrari. He didn’t want to relocate to Italy and they’re split from Ferrari, and became partners with TWR Arrows.
Edit: There’s probably a bit more nuance to it and I expect there are people here with better details, but it’s not a case of one man working for two teams at once.

In Ye Olden Days it happened a lot. OTTOMH: Len Terry's older Eagle against his new BRM P126 in 1968, Tony Southgate's older BRM P160C against his new Shadow DN1 in 1973, Harvey Postlethwaite's Fittipaldi F8C against his new Ferrari in 1982. Also HP's older Hesketh 308s against his newer Williams FW05 in 1976. In fat, there must be so many of them, I suspect I have misunderstood the question

Quite possibly. One might say the Parnelli VPJ4 and the Lotus 72 (although the Lotus had a lot of detail changes by the time of the 'E' version).

Didn't Chapman also redesign the BRM's rear suspension?
