the unreliability associated with such large steps in power doesn’t come unexpected, the law of diminishing returns is starting to hit hard the manufacturers.

Indeed.

It's worth remembering that for all of Ferrari's PU gains since mid-2018, they've also had far more reliability concerns compared to Mercedes.

Ultimately we're talking about the pinnacle of technology and the best designers are trying to eek out fractions of extra speed. Such gains naturally effect reliability in the short term - it wouldn't surprise me if we see them have the same issues Ferrari have occasionally had.

Not really that good news unfortunately...hope they get things right before Melbourne.

I perceive it as good news overall.  If you're not pushing the envelope, you're falling behind.

I remember Andy Cowell stating in a recent interview that Merc weren't even sure that they'd be able to finish a race back in 2014, the first year of these regs.

Whatever little reliability issues are popping up, they still have plenty of time to fix them, and testing will be a huge help.

I just looked through their partners/sponsors and can’t see any that have red as a leading colour.

They run Team Ineos in cycling which is Red and Black. Would explain as why the #44 is situated on a black background.

Yet, my two cents:

Probably just Nikis red star

Or some other Lauda red homage..

The Ineos deal will be announced officially today, would guess we will also see what it changes on the livery given that they have a old car there

https://twitter.com/...5539557376?s=19

Edit: yep, as I thought, livery reveal will be today

If their cycling team is anything to go by I would guess that's where the red paint was for.

I guess that's what 20M gets you. This event is just there to announce the new Ineos partnership.

Ineos??

Oh, frack off.

Just what I was going to say. Ineos is a hateful, hateful company for how they've treated residents when it comes to fracking.

Hopefully Mercedes is well and truly fracked this year with those engine problems.

Livery reveal? That's not like Mercedes.

Are Ineos a title sponsor? What's the big deal?

I did like the Red Halo last year, I must say.

Edit: what is a "Principal Partner" ?

Apparently they are paying a similar amount to Petronas...

A little bit. I wish there was more INEOS red around the airbox/back of the car... would have blended nicely with the black.

Otherwise, I like the move to matte paint.

I'm not sold on what they have done with the Petronas bits.... like they used MS Paint to design it. :)

Why are F1 livery reveals so consistently disappointing? Does nobody in this sport have any sort of imagination?

I had a memory of Ineos being in F1 before.

Jim's had his skirt lifted a bit there in that case,..!

But seriously, I expect the investment will ramp up and this could even be the Ineos F1 team one day...

Red looks proper out of place, not exactly the easiest colour to incorporate into that livery though. The Petronas 'swish' looks underwhelming this year though. Meh

Merc livery will be a Merc livery, F1 fans also don't expect a yellow Ferrari, so I don't know what people were expecting.

I think it's too bland to be called ugly. It's like the Haas prior to 2018...just dull.

I dont really get how you can call it boring, it's a Mercedes, you cant exactly make it more exciting lol

Though it is a bit ugly the Petronas bits dont find to the Ineos ones at all.

Apparently they are paying a similar amount to Petronas...

Nah, Petronas is around double AFAIK.

Petronas pays 50M, Ineos 20M, you have to pay more than that do you want to change a whole livery and even then a Mercedes will always be silver. By the way, Lewis as usual will bring the colours, purple on his helmet looks fresh.

Ineos also on the rear wing. 5x20M is quite an investment in the team.

As long as the car is fast no one will care what livery they're using........Mind you, that German gp livery was horrendous last year....
