Finally they are copying the Ferrari way of outwash FW

I've read a lot of conflicting posts about the Ferrari v RB v Merc front wing philosophy this week.

It seems like all three teams have maintained their philosophy from last season.

That is, Ferrari still work the air in a different way to Mercedes and Red Bull.

There has been no convergence as far as I can tell?

Correct. All teams have doubled down on last year's concepts.

Yeah, it's not pretty, but better than the others out there in my opinion.

This was the best of the new regs:

All 3 teams front wings now focuses on outwash. You can see Albert Farega's twitter for details

This was Mercedes's FW for comparison last year

That was testing last year prior to week 2 package.

Abu Dhabi 2019 looks very similar to today’s W11 wing.

You have to say something went very wrong with Ferrari the last few years if the whole field copies your ideas and you have nothing to show for it.

Amazing how they managed to make the sidepods even more defined and slim as before. Finally they are copying the Ferrari way of outwash FW and high inlet sidepods, further proof that Ferrari had the best car last year and great work by their aero team to come out with the best combination that now everybody copies.

I have a sneaky feeling this year's championship will be one of the most exciting ones.

Oh and I take my words back about boring livery, this livery is a little improvement from their previous ones. Boring is RB and Ferrari.

Ferrari the best car last year? What are you smoking? Either your trolling or you havent watched much f1 last year..

Now for the million dollar question: what’s my verdict? Well, I think I expected more.

In my opinion Red Bull and Ferrari have dug deeper

Quickest in quali most of the time. Driver error and some extremely stupid decisions costed them massively while Mercedes were like robots every race.

Quickest in quali doesn't mean much when you are dead slow in the race and burn through the tyres. Mercedes 2013 is a prime example of that, they went quicker backwards in the race then last years Ferrari in a straightline :p

I was saying yesterday RedBull managed to improve the sidepods towards MGP level- now MGP move the goal again. They look insane.

We'll have to see how it all works together, can't wait for the season to start to see Ferrari RedBull MGP go head to head

Great to hear this from Gary, in 2014 he also was sure Merc was not the team to beat.

I tried to make one as I did with the RB16 vs W11, but the different angles of photographs with the Ferrari make this pretty impossible/useless.

Has this guy ever been right about his impressions? I see him quoted every preseason, and I ignore him every preseason. Seems like he has a very broken eyeball test he applies to the cars, based on what he thinks is fast. But I can't remember him every being right.

W11 looks a tidy evolution from its predecessor, if rumoured gains have been made with the PU, it should again be the car to beat.

Yes but it's all academic at this stage because he's assuming that the wind tunnel will correlate to the track. It well might because Mercedes has had great correlation so far, but the true test will be, well, in testing.

I suspect both Ferrari and Red Bull have also found significant improvements. Both those cars look equally well sculpted, the Red Bull having the smallest frontal area of the side pods. I expect Honda has also improved their power, even more than last season which was impressive in itself. I fully expect an extremely tight season that is going to come down to how well the drivers and teams perform. The interesting bit though is that Lewis/Bottas and Charles/Seb will steal points off each other while Max is going to have no intra team competition. It will depend on whether Albon can also be a strong enough No.2 to take points off the Merc and Ferrari drivers.

If Max doesn't have a second car around him, he will be vulnerable to strategy team games (2 against 1) every single race.  He will need Albon to be in the ballpark.

Thanks.

I disagree with zibby that Merc have the smallest inlets on the grid, the RBs are smaller (that comment was made based on the renders which was a poor representation for comparison).

As you pointed out, my comment was based on the renders at the time.  I agree that RB's inlets are smaller.

Merc's inlets are also impressive, but the integration of the rad's into the monocoque and how tightly they've wrapped the pinched the bodywork around them pretty much puts everyone else to shame.

Merc livery will be a Merc livery, F1 fans also don't expect a yellow Ferrari, so I don't know what people were expecting.

SF Ferrari's color IS yellow though.

Not saying that, other teams should be doing much better etc. But as a fan i just want too see a championship going down the wire instead of already knowing who is gonna win it after paul ricard. Apart from 2016 all the others championships since 2014 have been meh to just downright boring. Thats a bit too much in my eyes. I would love to have A 2007&2008 or 2010, 2012 championship again.

No, he went to Dallara this year. Although this car is worked on since 2018, so his input is still in this car.
