John was a smashing human being who arguably achieved as much through his positivity and thinking of others and charities during his cancer battle than he did as a racer.
Let's not forget he was a winner in multiple forms of racing and that's not an easy thing to master.
Sincere condolences to his family and friends

Among his racing exploits, spitting Michael and Mario in an Andretti Family podium at Milwaukee Mile 1991 must rate highly.
RIP John

My memory is his Surfers Indy race win in the early 90s?

Very sad news. I remember him from NASCAR in the early 2000s, he was a really decent, underrated contender who took a couple of quite big wins. I was too young to know him in Indycar. I remember him in the light blue and red #43 Petty car, when I first started playing NASCAR games that was the car I wanted to choose every time.

He was also one of the first men of only a few who tried to do the Memorial Day Double....
Sad news, but he was drawn into a battle no-one was to win with ease and the odds heavily stacked against him. But he surely put up a great fight.
Rest in peace John Andretti.

won the first Surfers race, 1991 in the yellow Penzoil car. The first IndyCar race I ever watched, and an epic one at that. RIP John

Here he did what extremely few, if any other Indy car drivers did.

Bob, I was thinking of exactly the same thing, his making the semi's in that dragster. Basically, from out of the blue. THAT impressed me. I only spoke with John Andretti a few times, but as in the case of many we discuss here (e.g., John Martin, et. al.), he seemed to be exactly what he seemed to be: a nice guy. That he was so willing to try different types of racing was something that made it easy to like the guy. Godspeed, John.

There is an interesting story on John Andretti from down under.
For the 1988 Bathurst 1000, Garry Rogers had a new Holden Commodore race car but was without a sponsor.
He contacted Mario Andretti hoping his high profile would attract a major sponsor. Mario had other commitments but suggested his nephew John Andretti would be available. So arrangements were made with John.
Garry Rogers went to Sydney Airport to meet John and to drive him to Bathurst. You can imagine his disappointment when John came off the plane on crutches with a leg in plaster following a broken leg.
In the race John put the car into the wall at the top of the mountain on lap 37. He admitted it was driver error.
