I suspect the N Porter listed here is Nicky Porter. As far as I'm aware he would have replaced the Mini Cooper in mid-1964 with one of the very earliest 1275 Cooper S built  The later car still owned by him in 2018 (and quite probably still does).

The second episode of the second series of C4's Great British Car Journeys includes an ascent of Oddicombe, with Peter Davison at the wheel of a Morgan, racing the cliff railway, in which Christopher Timothy is travelling. Go to 34 minutes:

Managed to catch up with this on Acorn TV.

Peter Davison is driving a dark blue Morgan 4/4, registration VN18 AZA.

The staged 'race' is against the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, and is won by the Morgan.

Could this be the car that turns up later in sprints/hill climbs with John Grafton?
Does anybody have a report for Oddicombe Hill Climb, October 1966?

I'm sure I saw something on Spotlight the last time I was down home saying the local council didnt have the money to repair the road after winter storms and thus the beach is closed off. Tbf the road looked like a lunar surface.

TORBAY MC

ODDICOMBE HILL-CLIMB

Final West Country hill-climb of the

season, held by the Torbay MC at their

pleasant seaside venue at Oddicombe, took

place in glorious weather, but was marred by a

nasty accident at the end of the meeting in-

volving John Grafton and a marshal.

The 850 saloon class contained Mickey Tarr,

Mike Frowen and Jackie Purchase, but none

of them could get near the Mini of Brian

Preston. Preston assaulted the hill in fine style

and shattered the existing class record with a

magnificent 43.25 secs. The battle for second

place raged between Mike Frowen and his co-

driver Jackie Purchase, Mike coming out on

top by 0.2 sec. For once Mickey Tarr who

was running on "choppers" due to tyre failure

after a practice shunt, was well out of the

hunt.

Class two, for 1000 cc saloons, saw a very

neat drive by W. Watson, who took his 997

Mini-Cooper to a class win in 44.13 secs. John

Symons took class three in his "Tatty" Elf

with the amazing time of 41.15 secs. Bill

George brought his 1071 Mini-Cooper S into

second spot some 5.5 secs behind Symons.

Guy Rodgers (Cortina) climbed in 43.75 secs

to take the first spot in class four by 1.6 secs

from Dereck Swann (Cortina).

Class five, for modded Minis, was a cracker

from the word go. Gerry Smerdon was in

fabulous form with his 1293 S, for he took

just 39.41 secs to climb the hill, which was

BTD for a long while. As Gerry was the only

driver to break 40 secs, interest was centred

on the battle for second spot in the class

between the mildly tweaked 1275 S of farmer

John Fry and the very hot 1071 S of David

Dacosta, who was making one of his rare

appearances. Finally the extra ccs told, and

after a fine drive by both drivers John stopped

the watch at 41.03 secs, just 0.22 secs in front

of David.

Class six was the Spridgefire class and, as is

usual in this area, was really well supported.

No one broke the elusive 40 secs mark, but

Peter Bow in the ex-Amie Lefevre Midget came

very close, taking the class with 40.12 secs.

The season-long battle between John Nicholls

and Roger Doige in the Sprite continued, and

was also the battle for second place in the

class. After the first runs Roger led, and then

on his second run really turned on the heat,

ascending in 41.85 secs. John left the line

looking very determined indeed and the result

of a really ten-tenths effort was 41.80 secs,

beating Roger by just 0.05 sec.

Class 8 was dominated by one driver,

Vaughan Hatton in his immaculate E-type.

Vaughan hurled the beast up the hill as though

it was a Mini and controlled the power

superbly to record 39.25 secs. Second man was

Rod Harper in his Morgan who, despite giving

away over a litre and a half to the E-type,

finished only 0.8 sec. behind Vaughan.

The last class, for large sports cars, looked

like being a battle between John Grafton

(Cooper Monaco-Buick) and Ken Haskell

(Lotus Kenford). Grafton had experienced

gearbox trouble in practice, but after much

hard work in the paddock he came to the line

minus first gear, which on such a steep hill as

Oddicombe is really a very great disadvantage.

However, he set out to show Haskell who was

boss, and his time of 39.45 secs, although

slower than the E-type in the preceding class,

was well clear of Haskell in the Lotus Kenford.

Haskell only managed a best time of 40.21

secs and was being pushed by Cliff Howse,

who ushered his elderly Lotus 6 MG to the

top in 40.95 secs. All eyes were on Grafton

for his second run; although slow off the line

due to the lack of first gear, once on the move

he did not ease up at all and, having nego-

tiated the final hairpin, really hit the power on

the finishing straight. But on the small kink

near the finish line the car got away from him

and hit first one bank and then the other,

finally shooting off the course beyond the finish

line into a tree. Unfortunately a marshal was

hit as John left the road and it is thought

that he may have a broken leg. The car was

not too badly damaged and its driver was

unhurt. During the incident the car actually

passed through the finish beam, demolishing the

gear on the way, but the watch had stopped

at 37.69 secs which was easily BTD. The

class thus went to Ken Haskell.

ROBIN BOUCHER.

RESULTS

BTD: J. Grafton (3.5 Cooper Monaco-Buick),

37.69 s. Class winners: B. Preston (Mini), 43.25 s;

W. Watson (1.0 Mini-Cooper), 44.13 s; J. Symons

(Riley Elf), 41.15 s; G. Rogers (1.5 Ford Cortina),

43.75 s; G. Smerdon (1.3 Mini-Cooper S), 39.41 s;

P. Bow (MG Midget), 40.12 s; C. Matthews (MGA),

46.39 s; V. Hatton (3.8 Jaguar E), 39.25 s; K. Haskell

(Lotus Kenford), 40.21 s.

Torbay Motor Club history has now been amended (moving the first event back in time from 1963 to 1961):

"First used in 1961, the event attracted an entry of fifty-three drivers and John Grafton set a FTD of 37.55 sec. with a Ford-powered Lotus Seven."

The date of the first event was 19 March 1961.

Not quite the car for parish rounds!

Rev. P. Fairbrother, of Dawlish, advertised his much modified, M.G.-engined Dellow for sale, this month. "Present owner finds it unsuitable for parish rounds" said the advertisement in the monthly magazine of Haldon Motor Club. "Would consider swop for sedate saloon." Fellow motoring enthusiasts will sympathise with him, but those who know the ex-Skinner ex-Hutley car will well appreciate just how unsuitable it is for anything other than competition work.

In verse

In a verse printed beneath the advertisement, Editor Ken Mason sums up the situation in the first four lines:

"Out and about the Vicar sped.

In a sports car loud and red.

With exhaust noises far from mellow.

To church he drove in his M.G. Dellow."

Here is talk of a Cooper Manx, and what about the Lola Special?

Oddicombe Hill-Climb, Torbay Motor Club, March 1971

FTD: Brian Preston, (Cooper S 1293) 37.87s, wet

Classes:

Graham Bush (Mini 850) 42.38s

Bill Cherry (Mini 1293) 43.88s

Graham Da-Costa (1.6 Ford Escort) 41.67s

John Goddard (1.3 Mini) 42.84s

Angela Chipp (1.2 GSM Delta) 42.28s

Paul Channon (4.7 Cobra) 40.36s

Norman Trotter (1.6 Lotus S7) 42.33s

Derek Swann (1.6 Cortina GT) 45.64s

"With the demise of John Pugs-

ley's rapid DRW in practice the

specials and clubman's class was

a Lotus benefit with the Super

7 of Norman Trotter leading all

the way with a first run time of

42.79s which he further reduced

to 42.33 at his second attempt.

Ken White, having sold the in-

famous Cooper Manx to Keith

Steer, appeared in his front-

engined Lola Special, but did not

appear too happy with the hand-

ling, and did not appear in the

results."

Motoring News, 1 April 1971. Page 24.

At a Poltimore, Exeter, Autocross, organised by the Haldon Motor Club, in 1970, FTD was set by Broadhempston farmer Ken White "driving his powerful Cooper Manx", winner of the Renwick Trophy.

Described as a "1600 c.c. Ford-engined Cooper Manx."

Torbay Express and South Devon Echo, Wednesday 9 September 1970

Described elsewhere as a "Formula Ford-engined Cooper Manx."

J.T. Skinner, Dellow, appeared at a wet Brunton Hill Climb, 12 April 1959, time 31.28 sec.

Motor Sport, May 1959, Page 307.

John Skinner of Callington, Cornwall, raced the car on into 1960.

Class winner at 23rd B.A.R.C Brunton, 10 April 1960, up to 1,500 c.c. sports car class.

The Dellow M.G. then likely passed into the hands of T. A. Kempthorne-Ley of Falmouth. Were there two Dellow-M.G.s?

Who is Hutley (mentioned above)? Did he appear at Oddicombe?

Update: G.T. Hutley of Teignmouth, Devon.

Further update: Gordon Hutley.

The red Dellow of John Skinner was SVC 261.

The cars of Gordon Hutley:

Dellow (SVC 261) - 1961

Staddons Special - 1961

Ford Special - 1962

Cannon trials car - 1963

1964 - Broadhempston Autocross: "One of the most interesting vehicles competing was Tiny Tim, driven by Gordon Hutley. Tiny Tim is powered by the Jaguar "C" type engine which was fitted to Stirling Moss's car when he won at Le Mans.(The quote is nonsense, but the car is intriguing.) Torbay Express and South Devon Echo, Tuesday 25 August 1964

Did these cars appear at Oddicombe?

Two South Devon brothers,

well-known in Westcountry

motoring circles, are to open a

Lotus centre at Paignton.

Operating from Roger's Garage

they will sell the Elite in com-

ponent form.

Vaughan and Nigel Hatton

are to collect two kits from Lotus

later this week. It is claimed that

an inexperienced amateur can

assemble the kits in 25 hours, so

both models should be finished

and on show in a few days' time.

Torbay Express and South Devon Echo, Wednesday 17 January 1962

Oddicombe Hill Climb, 28 October 1962

A. F. Lefevre fought off competition from three Vauxhall VX 4/90's to win the over-1300c.c. class in 42.34sec. In the G.T. class up to 1300c.c., Vaughan Hatton clocked 40.78sec. in his immaculate Lotus Elite. R. Smart's Elite took second place.

The car was #50, registration GAU 260.

Per Bonhams:
In 1962 the car was purchased from a Devonshire farmer by Colin Harrisson, a serving Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade at the time. The buff logbook then shows an ownership change on 18th June 1963 when the car was sold by Colin to a Mr Robert John McArthur of Hounslow, Middlesex. Colin Harrisson had meanwhile competed in various Hill Climbs with the car during his brief period of ownership and only sold GAU 260, which he greatly cherished, because of a posting to the Far East for two years. Colin recalls today that the car handled superbly and was quicker than more modern opposition.
Apart from blowing a cylinder head gasket at Prescott due to some over enthusiastic driving, GAU 260 proved very reliable and was used as daily transport!

DOES LOTUS SURVIVE?

Having recently rediscovered a

photo he took in Devon in 1972

Peter Cowlan is anxious to

discover the fate of SRL 2.

"I believe it to be the Lotus Six

campaigned by Sid Broad in the

south west in the 1950s and 1960s"

say Cowlan.

From Rupert

1st Oddicombe Hill Climb, Sunday 19 March 1961

At last a report of the first hill climb held at Oddicombe!

TORQUAY TIMES - FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 1961

ODDICOMBE HILL

CLIMB DRAWS

SUNDAY CROWDS

ABOUT 1,000 spectators on Sun-

day saw over 40 cars-rang-

ing from mini-saloons to highly-

tuned specials-individually roar

their way up from Oddicombe

Beach in a hill climb organised by

Torbay Motor Club.

Practice runs were held in the

morning when onlookers began

gathering along the 750-yard

course, and by the afternoon all

the best vantage points were

crowded. Some chose the cliff

top where they had a good gen-

eral view of the climb, but the

most popular viewpoints were the

three Alpine-like bends on the 1

in 6 hill, which saw the only casu-

alties of the day-two minor

abrasions by cars taking the cor-

ners too close in. Black tyre

marks on the bends revealed that

many had narrow escapes, how-

ever, and screeched around only

inches from the bank. Several

competitors must have lost a lot

more in tyre wear than in petrol!

SIX CLASSES

The cars were divided into six

classes, according to power, and

the outright winner was G. S.

Smeardon in a Lotus 7, who shot

up the hill in 38.26 seconds. Tor-

quay's Mayor, Ald. J.F. Haarer,

did well in the sports cars up to

1600 c.c. class, and was placed

fourth in his M.G.A. Twin-Cam.

Officials kept in contact along

the course with walkie-talkie sets

operated by the Junior Leaders'

Regiment, Denbury.

Results: Up to 1000 c.c. cars-

1. Roger Christmas, 46.45 secs. (N.S.U. Prinz "30");

G. S. Smeardon appears later as Gerry Smerdon? Which spelling is correct?

Best regards

It looks like Oddicombe could be Hugh Pollard’s first hill climb in the TVR. He also competed at Wiscombe, Dyrham Park, Brunton? & Castel Farm and possibly Weston Speed Trials. He seemed to do quite well beating Elites and MGA.

Oddicombe Hill Climb, 18 October 1964
60 CARS TAKE PART
IN TOUGH HILLCLIMB
AT ODDICOMBE
D.T. VAN HORN driving a Morgan Plus 4 put up the
fastest time of the day to win the Boyce Trophy and
replica, at Torbay Motor Club's hillclimb at Oddicombe yes-
terday.
He covered the 750-yard course in 40.20sec, taking the
one left and two right hair-
pin bends in forceful fashion.
Both Van Horn and the Morgan
were on top form and, aided by
the fact their runs were made
before the rain came, they were
able to make Oddicombe history
by out-performing the Lotus and
Lilfo-Elva alongside.
More than 80 cars, varying from
850c.c. standard models to power-
ful sports cars and out-and-out
specials took part in the eight-
class event.
Fewer watched
Possibly because of the un-
favourable weather and the fact
that the meeting had not been
publicised, fewer than usual spec-
tators lined the course.
All the same the collection
taken by the organisers for the
Torquay appeal for the Sail
Training Association was well
supported.
The first two classes were
completely devoted to catering for
the B.M.C. Minis—with the Coopers
setting the pace. But there was
more variety and excitement in
the other classes. While there were
plenty of thrills, spills were few.
A Ford Cortina G.T. ran out of
road at the third corner early on,
but nothing more.
Mechanical troubles hit a few
of the entrants: J. Morgan's M.G.
Midget "blew up," D. Shearman's
Healey 3000 suffered a split
radiator and J. Grafton's Lotus
Super 7 broke a half-shaft. But
for the Lotus having to retire,
Grafton might well have put up
fastest time of the day.
H. Hassell, leading South-west driver
in autocross and driving competi-
tions, won the up to 115c.c. (sic) G.T. class.
In his very rapid M.G. Midget he beat
off competition from Fairthorpes, Spit-
fires and other Midgets and Sprites to
clock 43.56sec. M. Ellis (Spitfire) was
second in 43.63sec, and T. Keen (Sprite
Mk III) was third in 44.10 sec.
A. G. Saunders (Austin Mini) clocked
46.94sec to win the series and improved
touring cars up to 850c.c. class and the
850—1150c.c. class was won by W.A.
George in a Morris Cooper 'S' in 42.40
sec.
P. S. Roberts (Austin Cooper 'S')
won the over 1150c.c. class in 43.10sec
comfortably ahead of A. Stones Morris
Cooper 'S.' The next class went to J.
W. Nicholls whose much modified
Austin Mini returned 43.96sec.
The class for 1151-1600c.c. G.T.s
was won by E. W. Preston in his TVR
Grantura MkII with a time of
40.56sec, and the GT over 1600c.c.
was won with ease by Van Horn. The
best time put up by the "sports cars
and specials of any capacity" entrants
was 41.90sec recorded by M. Burgess
in his Lilfo-Elva. Mrs. A Collins, in a
Sprite MkIII, put up the fastest time
of day for a woman competitor—
—44.62sec.

Interesting. The 1966 results had my sometime dentist Peter Bow, whom I've mentioned before, winning his class in his Sprite. Third in one of the Mini classes was N.A. Arrow. Now Haldon Motor Club held a rally called the Bow and Arrow Rally, named after two members, Peter Bow was one could N.A. Arrow be Nick Arrow who was the other?

Oddicombe Hill Climb, 15 March 1964

LOTUS ELITE TIMED

BEST AT ODDICOMBE

RON SMART, of Bristol, driving

a Lotus Elite put up the best

time of the day at the Torbay

Motor Club-organised Oddicombe

hill climb yesterday.

Driving his 1220c.c. Elite with

calculated daring he covered the

hairpin-studded 780-yard one-in-

six course in 37.84sec., to win the

Poulson Cup and the class for

sports cars and specials of any

capacity.

This was the class which pro-

vided most of the excitement for

the hundreds of spectators, for

Ron Smart had plenty of compe-

tition. He was lined up against

three Lotus Sevens, a Cooper

Climax, a scruffy but potent Lilfo-

Elva. and a modified Jaguar XK

120.

In the class for G.T. models of

over 1600 c.c. it was D. T. Van

Horn of Plymstock in a Morgan

Plus 4 who provided most of the

thrills. With little effort he com-

pletely outclassed his Jaguar,

M.G., and Triumph-mounted

rivals by putting up a winning

time of 40.84 sec.

J. Ali Khan, of Torquay, in a

Ford Lotus Cortina, clocked

41.98sec, to win the class for im-

proved touring cars of over 1150c.c.

At one stage, M. B. Noel-Buxton,

of Diptford (Jaguar 3.8 Mark 2)

seemed in the running, but he could

not better 43.64sec.

Other results were: Series and im-

proved touring cars up to 850c.c.—1. R.

W. Harper (Plymouth), Morris, 47.16sec.

851 to 1150c.c.—1. G. S. Smerdon (Kings-

bridge), Austin Cooper "S" 41.84sec.;

2. A. C. I. Bulpin (Newton Abbot), Austin

Cooper "S" 42.68sec. Modified touring

cars, any capacity—1. D. C. Wynne (Lis-

keard), Austin Cooper "S" 1275c.c.,

39.02sec.: 2. E. Williams (Bristol), Ford

Anglia 40.28sec. G.T. Cars, up to

1150c.c.—1. J. Morgan (Bristol), M.G.,

42.36sec.; 2. H. Hossell (Exeter), M.G.,

42.68sec. G.T. cars, 1151 to 1,600c.c.—1.

E. W. Preston (Perranporth), T.V.R.

Grantura, 39.56sec.: 2. J. E. B. Kite

(Taunton), M.G.A., 43.12sec.

Torbay Express and South Devon Echo, Monday 16 March 1964

'Wolves'

among the

hill climb

'sheep'

TORBAY Motor Club's Oddi-

combe hill climb attracted

more than the usual number of

wolves in sheep's clothing.

There were six Cooper "S"s,

including one with a 1,275c.c.

unit, three Ford Cortina G.T.s,

J. Ali Khan's Ford Lotus Cor-

tina, a much modified 1197

Anglia and several others which

proved deceptively rapid — in-

cluding a scruffy looking, but

highly potent Lilfo-Elva special.

Fastest time of the day was

put up by Ron Smart (Bristol)

in an Elite. He had some engine

trouble in the closing runs and

on the last his Climax engine

was missing madly. But his best

time, 37.84sec. was still good

enough to give him F.T.D. and

win him the Poulson Cup.

Ron 1

Ron's Elite (Registration No.

Ron 1) was pitched against a

breathed-on XK 120, three Lotus

Sevens, a Cooper-Climax and

the Lilfo-Elva.

Thanks to the Lotus Cortina

being homologated Mr. Khan was

able to switch from under

1600 c.c. G.T. class to that for

improved touring models. Noel-

Buston's 3.8 Mk. II Jaguar pro-

vided him with some competition

but could not better his 41.98

seconds.

In the class for modified tour-

ing cars, any capacity, a battle

developed between D. C. Wynne's

1275 Cooper "S" and Ted

Williams's amazingly speedy 1197

Anglia. The "S" eventually won

out with a time of 39.02 while the

Anglia went down fighting,

clocking 40.28 before shattering a

half-shaft on the last run.

As usual, the event, at which a

collection was taken for the

Guide Dogs for the Blind, was

well organised.

Long may Oddicombe hill

climb continue.

Oddicombe Hill Climb, 11 March 1962:

Oddicombe

hill climb

placings

There were plenty of thrills

but no spills at the Oddi-

combe speed hill climb organ-

ised by Torbay Motor Club, at

Torquay yesterday.

Watched by hundreds of specta-

tors, 56 cars, varying from un-

modified family saloons to hotted-

up sports models, raced up the

steep hairpin bend studdied (sic)

course.

Best time of the day was put up

by K. G. Haskell, who was awarded

the Poulson Cup.

Driving a Lotus, he took the hill

in grand style to clock 39.60

seconds and so win his class for

specials and modified sports and

to take first place overall.

Partnered by S. Richards

(Cooper Austin) he also had a

share in winning the team award.

There were only two women

competitors, Mrs. M. Smith (Austin

Seven) and Mrs. P. Richards

(Cooper Austin). They did not

figure in the results, but they were

given plenty of encouragement by

the spectators.

Results: Up to 1,000 c.c. — 1. J.

Skinner, Cooper Austin (44.32.)

1001-1600 c.c. — 1. C. Glenie, Vaux-

hall VX4/90 (49.0). Over 1600 c.c.—

1. A. C. J. Carter, Zephyr (48.55).

Sports and G.T. up to 1000 c.c.—1.

C. Baker, Sebring Sprite (42.94).

Sports and G.T. 1000-1600 c.c.— 1. H.

Pollard, TVR Grantura (43.43).

Sports and G.T. over 1600 c.c.—1. J.

B. Banbury, Morgan Plus Four

(41.50). Specials and modified

sports — 1. K. G. Haskell, Lotus

(39.60).

Is this the first appearance of Baker in 5435 WD?

Possibly raced at Boxing Day Brands, 26.12.1961?

Does anybody have a programme for Brands?

SPORTS CAR BUILT

IN HIS SPARE TIME

MR. JIM FURSDON, 22-years-old proprietor of Bovey Motors, Bovey Tracey, has built himself a racing car in spare time. It is a Lotus 7 sports model—a similar type recently set up a new sports-car record of 108 m.p.h. "I started to build the car on October 27 and by putting in the odd hour, whenever I had the time, it took only a total of 38 working hours," said Mr. Fursdon. The assembly work was most enjoyable and I would recommend anyone interested to have a go. "The components are bought from manufacturers as a kit in a crate. The motor comes separately. "I consider any novice can construct one of these cars, by using ordinary hand tools. "All I needed was two spanners and a screw driver."

A NEW ERA

Mr. Fursdon and his father, who started Bovey Motors about 15 months ago, have been appointed distributors in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall for the Lotus sports model component kit. Jim Fursdon plans to do some hill-climbing and to take part in trials in his Lotus. "In fact, I think the Lotus will bring about a new era in sports car ownership in Devon." he added.

Brian Whitmarsh, of Dartmouth, winner at Oddicombe, turns up on the 1963 Monte Carlo Rally, navigator to Charles Glenie, #133 Vauxhall VX 4/90. Starting from Glasgow, the car, with Don Moore-prepared motor, was plagued by two smashed windscreens and a gearbox problem.
