Two e-Prix in three weeks!
What's the sorcery behind this?

Just clever scheduling, for a change!
After an EVENTFUL Mexico City e-Prix, Formula E is back racing in the streets of Marrakesh.

One of its iconic locations, delivering good Formula E races since Season 3.

Last year, it was a GREAT one!
Plenty of action since the beginning of the race. With Jean Eric Vergne outbraking himself into T1 & spinning on Sam Bird's Envision Virgin car.

But the big Drama exploded later in the race, as the two BMW's of Alexander Sims & Antonio Felix Da Costa started battling hard for the lead.

The englishman tried to attack the Portoguese on the oustide. None of them wanted to give up, both locking up & crashing into each other!

---->

2498660-51871917-1600-900.jpg

Antonio Felix Da Costa was sent into the wall, while Sims lost three place & the lead of the race.

As the chaos unfolded, Jerome D'Ambrosio (Mahindra) jumped at the front of the pack, before the entrance of the Safety Car!

With only one lap of Green Flag racing after the SC, it was all done & dusted, despite a late charge for the lead by Robin Frijns (Virgin)!

D'Ambrosio achieved his first ever Formula E Win (on track!)

Relieve the Classic

Mexico City e-Prix delivered, once again!
Thanks to a renewed track layout, the racing was better than ever on a fast, striking layout including the infamous Peraltada!

The first few laps were among the best Formula E action ever, with Evans & Lotterer going side by side into T1 for the lead of the race.

The German had to lift off, slotting in P4 as multiple battles unfolded around the long, flowing mexican corners.

Major drama on Lap 3, as Nico Muller smashed his Dragon Racing hard into the T1 wall, causing the entrance of the SC!

mexico-city-e-prix-nico-mulle-1.jpg

After the SC, Mitch Evans (Jaguar) just DISAPPEARED into the distance. Amazing pace by the Kiwi, as the battle went on till the chequered flag for P2 onwards.

Drama in the closing stages, as Sam Bird (envision virgin) went straight into the wall while battling for the podium, while Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes) smashed his front wing while defending from Alex Sims, the two battling for the Championship Lead.

12451.png

Alexander Sims was succesful in damage limitation during the Mexico City e-Prix.
His comeback drive from the back of the grid was extraordinary and granted him important points, but Mitch Evans just about got into the Championship Leading Position.

Stoffel Vandoorne could have been near the top, but a costly mistake ruled him out of the Top 3 in the standings.

Will it change in Marrakesh?

Last year, it was a BMW track. With both Sims & Da Costa making the difference.

Also Techeetah's pace was impressive, but hampered by drivers mistakes.

The Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan (also known as Marrakech Street Circuit and Marrakech Racetrack) is a 3 kilometres (1.86 mi) temporary Street Circuit.

It has a capacity of 10,000 spectators and it's a Mix between Traditional Street Circuit & Street Tracks in terms of Layout.

So you'll find medium speed corners, long range corners, but also chicanes & very slow sections.

UNOFFICIAL LAP RECORD ->  Nico Muller, Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler (2019) - 1:17.074

RACE LAP RECORD -> Lucas di Grassi, Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler (2019) - 1:20.296

2019 - Jerome d'Ambrosio, Mahindra Racing
2018 - Felix Rosenqvist, Mahindra Racing
2017 - Sebastien Buemi, e.dams Renault

Last but not least!!
The day after the e-Prix, the Rookie Test will take place in Marrakesh!

A very interesting line-up of young drivers trying to impress with the Gen 2 package!
Big names like Sergio Sette Camara, Joel Eriksson, Dani Juncadella, Filipe Albuquerque, Pipo Derani & many more, including new faces like Lucas Auer, Kyle Kirkwood & the return of Jamie Chadwick after the Succesfull W-Series campaign!

Whats with the excessive focus on Vandoorne? You could have said the exact same thing about Sam Bird, who was in 2nd at the time and would have been 1pt behind Evans if he'd held it for a couple more laps.

Hoping for another exciting race. Hoping for the BBC to actually show it this time.

FANCY OP, well done!

Looking forward to this, and YES, very nice not to have to wait 5 weeks between races.  Or more.

He was the championship leader after Santiago, he was the most consistent driver in Riyadh and without the Mexico crash he could have been veery close to the top

I feel he's going to be a very serious championship contender, that's all.

And i have to pick out some drivers out of the 24, if not the OP would be just a wall of text! But yeah, thanks for the feedback, maybe i'll do better next time around!

Other points of the weekend

- Will Neel Jani start to perform after a difficult debut? If not, time to be replaced?

- Audi Sport is almost constantly behind its costumer, Envision Virgin Racing. Will the trend change?

- Nico Muller showed great speed before the crash in Mexico. He was the fastest man on track in Rookie Testing last season. Will he be one to beat?

- Jean Eric Vergne's first races were very disappointing. End of the winning streak for the 2x FE champion?

Fastest Lap Prediction!

Guess the Lap Record!

The circuit is set to remain unchanged in Marrakesh.

So we'll get the first proper comparison of the Season 6 powertrains compared to the Season 5 ones.

My bet, is around 4 tenths improvement over last season:

That is a simple one. Both have almost the same package, but Envision has two good racers with Bird and Frijns (albeit a  bit unlucky last time out). Di Grassi is a good Audi driver, but he has to do everything alone as Daniel Abt (son of former race director HJ Abt) is still kept on board. Not that Daniel is bad per se, he has his moments, but they're getting fewer and farther between.

On a sidenote, I really like the Marrakech layout for the FE, whereas in the WTCC/WTCR I hated this venue. Probably because the FE cars are built a bit studier. Also, it's the only straight where you can actually HEAR the cars zoom by, makes kind of a TIE fighter sound.

There was an interview with Alan McNish where he said that he's carried over Audi Sport Team Joest's Le Mans programme philosophy of long-term driver line-up stability. Normally you might say 'you can't argue with the results', but right now they are being beaten somewhat consistently by Envision so... yeah. Bit of thinking to do at Audi perhaps.

One problem I suppose with the FE field becoming so competitive and skilled is that some very good and decent drivers, from those who've been here since day one to relative newcomers, are going to face the chopping block in favour of drivers who teams hope will give them more of an edge.

You don't have to justify yourself.  You created an epic OP with love, and the first thing coming out of someone's (virtual) mouth is uncalled-for criticism.  Best to just ignore.

Personally, I thought Stoffel's consistent form was looking great right up to his collision with the wall on the penultumate lap of the Mexico race. Big early season talking point for me.

What?  Didn't you enjoy the Welsh Open Snooker they showed instead?  Some people are never satisfied!

At least it is on BBC2 this time so presumably in HD rather than Blurivision and more likely to be actually shown now that they have put it in the schedules.  And none of those sneaky adverts that Eurosport  slip in just when things were getting interesting.

I to really enjoyed the Welsh Open Snooker and the panic that set in at about 2 mins past the hour when i twigged that they werent going to cut to the Formula E. Bless the BBC. Cue blind panic and rage as i angrily had to find the feed on my phone and just got it turned on as the cars were going to the first corner.

Still think they ought to have double-headers every city - Friday Shakedown and FP1 (at race time), Saturday FP2, Qualy1 and Race1, Sunday FP3, Qualy2 and Race2.   ;)

I actually don't like double headers myself. Having multiple winners over a weekend makes it seem less special to me. But each to their own  :)

The way it is now with a double header to start and end the season with normal rounds in the middle is perfect for me.

Also how good has this season been. 4 different winners from 4 races and that feels like the norm in FE.

Should be in for another good one on a circuit I don't really like but FE has salvaged it somewhat in recent times.

I agree with this.. would like to see two day FE meets though going forward - FP1 and FP2 on day one and qualy and race on day two. Maybe make the free practice sessions a bit longer too as especially FP2 is very short at the moment.

I tend to agree. I dislike the IndyCar 'Dual in Detroit' for this reason.

However, the economics of it support double headers. I'd be pretty salty if my neighborhood was heavily disrupted for weeks for 1x 45min race.

This would work quite well if the support billing can expand I think. Last ePrix I went to in Berlin before the I-Pace eTrophy began felt a bit sparse between sessions even with everything on one day.

The eTrophy could surely increase two or three races per weekend, or future regional ETCR events could make guest appearances. I wouldn’t even rule out an F4 derived junior series.

Given how long some they have taken to repair barriers etc during FE races (think of Rome and Bern last year), i dont think that a jam packed event would be wise.

Super fun session, with plenty of quali simulations already!

A 1'17''8 puts Da Costa on top.
Pretty crazy lap times, considering how dusty the track is after only one session.

We could dig deep into the 1'16'' tomorrow

You never know, there might be a worst case fallback of going to a permanent race facility for a behind closed doors race.

Also, interestingly, all cars are being taken to the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia after Marrakesh to be stored centrally rather than individually going back to individual team bases.

Huh? FP1 on Friday?

Relatively early race time by FE's standards on Saturday which last season put FP1 at the crack of dawn. It was practically dark and drivers complained it was too cold.

So this year it's been placed on the Friday.

This is utter nonsense, if true.
