The INDYCAR iRacing Challenge, a virtual racing event featuring a full field of NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers, begins this weekend with Saturday’s American Red Cross Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International beginning at 4 p.m. ET - 8 p.m. GMT

The event, which will last approximately 90 minutes, will be streamed through INDYCAR.com while INDYCAR’s YouTube and Facebook platforms as well as iRacing’s Twitch will serve as additional outlets for viewing. The NBC broadcasting team of Leigh Diffey, Townsend Bell and Paul Tracy will be calling the action. The pre-race activities will be highlighted by iconic national anthem singer Jim Cornelison adding his voice as he has for the past three Indianapolis 500s.

To enhance the fan experience, INDYCAR will conduct a 15-minute, pre-race virtual autograph session with several of the participants beginning at 3:15 p.m. The drivers participating this week will be announced @INDYCAR at 10 a.m. Saturday. There also will be a live interview with the race winner by post-race host Katie Hargitt on INDYCAR's Instagram immediately following the conclusion of the race.

The starting lineup will be set through a 10-minute qualifying session prior to the event. In the interest of fairness, iRacing will give all participants the same car setups. Teams will have the ability to design each driver's car livery to match their desired paint scheme, making them easily recognizable to the viewers.

The entry list of 25 drivers includes series champions Josef Newgarden, Simon Pagenaud, Will Power, Sebastien Bourdais, Tony Kanaan, four Indianapolis 500 winners and collectively has registered 140 series victories. The Team Penske trio of Newgarden, Pagenaud and Power, along with the A.J. Foyt Racing duo of Bourdais and Kanaan, have combined for nine series championships led by Bourdais’ four and two by Newgarden.

If that wasn’t enough talent, a driver with a record-tying seven NASCAR Cup Series crowns – Jimmie Johnson – will join the virtual race as a “special guest” entrant.

The American Red Cross Grand Prix is the first of six events to be held weekly each Saturday through May 2. The opening event will be followed by others at Barber Motorsports Park (April 4), a “Driver’s Choice” track (April 11), a “Random Draw” track (April 18), Circuit of The Americas (April 25) and a non-INDYCAR “Dream” track (May 2).

Fans of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES will be able to participate in the INDYCAR iRacing Challenge, a six-event virtual event which begins Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, through the INDYCAR Fantasy Challenge driven by Firestone game, which is accessible within the NTT INDYCAR Mobile App powered by NTT DATA.

The game established for the actual season has a re-imagined interface for 2020. Players select four-driver teams within a $100 weekly salary.

So there we go...

Our Brave New World.

Fascinating. Star-studded entry list. Does the iRacing indycar model actually differentiate between Honda and Chevrolet engines? Or is that just in name only?

Thanks for putting this up.

Making picks in this is really difficult. I know know how well each of these guys tends to do in the sim racing world.

Fantasy Indycar without Scott Dixon available is ... interesting, to say the least. Will VEACH become an online title contender? Maybe Ferrucci (won't pick him anyway)? Choices, choices ...

Indycar seems to be executing it better than F1. Better able to get the drivers (basically all) to show up in to their sims.

There really is no excuse to let the show disappear, give a pass to these virtual races. Sponsors paid for your devotion, not just to drive actual cars.
You officially have nothing better to do unless a loved one is fighting for their life.

If a champion is bad at simming, that should be all in good fun.

HĂĽlkenberg took on the world of sim racers on live TV, full knowing he had no chance to shine, but he drove admirably, participated in the banter. He sure wasn't paid, but showed fans and simmers respect and action. I was positively surprised but I should not have been.

I hope before this period comes to a close, we get to see the absent F1 stars also stepping up. No-one takes this as seriously as real racing, but fans paid for their TV subscriptions to see you guys race.

To be honest, the online racing has been pretty watchable. The V8 Supercars race put on by the all star field organized by Team Redline was pretty amazing.
Very hopeful for the Indy race!

The driver rankings, based on salary, are interesting.  Is there a background of virtual racing they're drawing upon?

The car label as simply "Dallara IR18" and does not have engine branding, I assume they only have it in the broadcast and on the car paints for this series for reasons of exposure. Short: No, they're all identical.

The fun thing about sim racing is that despite equal equipment, it's not just the usual suspects (sim pros and geek F1 racers) dominating on skill and there is still a lot of pace difference.

In the V8 Supercars race, VER was decidedly average (well, top-10 in a field of like 50 pros). He sounded pretty annoyed with himself for being slow. Fixed setup, equal cars, delegated by a bunch of FFord and GT racers. You betcha he'll be working on his skills with that car and track to find out where he was losing so much time :-D

This will be interesting in terms of picks. I don't even know where to begin.

Nah. We've been focusing on what's really important for people in quarantine. Hand sanitiser, and, er, erectile dysfunction medicines. :p

I'm always hoping they won't. The short layout is more in the spirit of the 1960s track and would be crazy fast in a single seater.

Anyway, bravo Indycar. iRacing plus a full field of real-life drivers.

Yeah, the Boot is the most over-rated piece of track in all of racing.  It ruins the whole flow of the track, and is not conducive to racing.  It's basically a random appendage added in order to keep the track from being too short.

I'm torn between being excited for this and tamping down my excitement because I know there's going to be stuff that disappoints me.

I do kinda wonder what the oldies like Kanaan and Bourdais think of this madness. The average age of my fantasy picks is about 21...

Sadly, Wickens is a late scratch:

Unfortunately I will not be able to make today’s event. There was an issue with the courier and the steering wheel will not arrive in time for today’s race.

Quite sad, as apparently  Max Papis prepared the wheel for Wickens all night long, but they just couldn't get the wheel to him in time to set it up.

They should really stop inviting Montoya to these races.  He's clearly one of those dicks who thinks it's funny to wreck other people because it's a game, and he detracts from the entire event.  This must be the fourth time this week I've seen Montoya just flat out rear-end someone.

He looked to be the fastest of the legends over a couple of laps but also the most boisterous I guess...

That is very much his real world temperament  . And I'd call it anger more than funny lol. Montoya used to perform full car hip checks on competitors at the Rolex 24 hours endurance race

I don't know how long you've been following Montoya  .   That is very much his real world temperament

Since 1998, and he was my #1 favorite driver for most of that time.  He was never gifted with a triple digit IQ, but at least he managed to finish most races without rear-ending someone, you don't get a tie in two Indycar championships without finishing a race here or there.

I'm pretty sure I remember him doing that to Scott Pruett to win his first NASCAR Busch race!

In what year was it added?

1971. Designed, or so my often faulty memory tells me, in consultation with Jackie Stewart.

I don't hate it but the libidinous, fun-loving part of myself tells me I'd like to see them out on the short track.
