It was a decent substitute for the real thing, audio quality aside. Really, really nice to see Wickens back in competition.

I think sim racing could be a massive new direction for him if his recovery plateaus and he doesn’t make it back to full-time Indycar.

I prefer Marco Andretti's approach to sim racing compared to Conor's or Pato's.  If you can't or are unwilling to do a good job, just GTFO and don't be a frat house douche.

I remember when I played this on my PC

IndyCar_Series_Cover.jpg

It was better than anything else. True IRL fast and only ovals

This was intro. Even now I have chills

https://www.youtube....h?v=_zsOEGXwDls

That and its sequel were superb games, clearly made by enthusiasts. Brain in a Jar also made Indy 500 Evolution, which looks pretty good as far as I've seen. It was only released in the US despite being made in the UK.

Theoretically, if he keeps practicing with these control systems, he could use the exact same set-up in a real car, and re-join IndyCar even before making a complete recovery...  I don't think that's just wishful thinking, either.

Yeah some of the insights into the drivers does not....make the series seem cooler. I always thought Power was a bit of a ******** but jesus

To be fair, those listening in to team radios had heard all of this kind of stuff for years.  It's hardly a surprise that a bunch of type A racing drivers used to screaming at people in the sweet isolation of their helmets have a potty mouth problem.

It's not surprising I guess but it's the....like Daly said it's the internet calm down. Emotions run high in competition, you're running on adrenaline not blood, etc. So I can understand people having their meltdowns. But Power flips out like a 12 year old on Call of Duty.

At the risk of raining on the only parade we've currently got, I think the conclusions to be drawn from these races, even with the small sample size so far, are fairly limited.  This is an exercise where Team Penske has shown that it can bring its massive resources to bear, but otherwise it's a theater of the absurd where Sage Karam is a hero, Scott Dixon gets lapped by half the field, Alexander Rossi can't buy a clue, and Dalton Kellett regularly finishes in front of his far more accomplished teammates.

Think about that.

OTOH, Wickens clearly thoroughly enjoyed himself, so good for him.

Pretty much sounds like the regular-absurd "expect the unexpected" IndyCar we all love so much.  Nothing to see here, move along.

The second race had hugely annoying audio issues, engines sounded muted and mic scrathcy. First race was awesome.

Dixon, in Racer mentioned that sim racing is a long way off from the sims that the manufacturers work with, and from the real cars.  He didn't say it takes no talent, just that it is not the same as physical cars.  And he mentioned Rosenqvist saying that his sim racing did create the risk of forming bad habits for driving the real cars...

So, while interesting, this probably should not be taken as representative of what will happen once the cars are back on track.

Now I see what people mean about F1 e Race.  With only 4 real time drivers on the grid what a waste.  Thank God IndyCar drivers see the value for the fans

Yeah, and then also, why replace last week's winner Zhou and pole sitter and third place finisher Philipp Eng (with a cricketer, no less!)?  Weird decisions.

I'm sure that was because of their availability, rather than purposefully being left out.

Eng was co-commenting the race on ORF (from home) and said he wasn't invited. He said he would like to participate again.

That's a shame. But in fairness, he's not an F1 driver either.

Edit: Not that I'd rather see singers and golfers in the race.

Disppointing that.  Eng is an accomplished real world racer, experienced and highly rated sim racer, was on POLE and finished third in the first race, ... and then was replaced with a cricketer who came two laps down - or worse.  Hard to take nonsense like that seriously, and no idea why Red Bull wouldn't want to put up the best possible team for themselves (and yes, that would mean telling Verstappen to get his ass into the game - but if he's not there, Eng is a pretty worthy replacement)

I blame society.

While there's been a smattering of "Young American" references, in two weeks of professional commentary no one, and I mean no one, has been in either the "danger zone" or the "catbird seat."

Frankly, I doze off . . .

More seriously, watching your heroes struggle while Sage Karam runs away has limited appeal on a regular basis, at least to these eyes.  A two mile oval at least offers something new.  But I stand by my "artificial flowers" comment--prolonged exposure to this just reminds me how much I miss the real thing.  Yesterday NBCSN reran Fontana 2016.  That was a show!

The racing at Michigan will be more interesting (more reliance on race craft than equipment) but be warned ahead of time, the crash physics are horrible.

People will either stop dead in the catch-fence or be ejected into the stratosphere. It's something we've long mocked, but tolerated, on iRacing that will look appalling to wider public gaze. I think that's why they purposely don't show the crashes on the broadcasts because they look too funky.

I find it fascinating to watch how the rest of the field is closing the gap, and Sage has plenty of competition with Felix, Power, McLaughlin.  Looks like Palou is getting stronger.  Askew, Newgarden and Pagenaud seem dead serious about challenging, too.  And since it's IndyCar, even the "dominant" Karam ended up DNFing in perfect IndyCar fashion after the top two contenders collided... what's not to love?

Until they're in real cars on real tracks, love is not in the cards.

Lockdown diversions.

Appreciated, but still

a pale substitute.

iRacing Indy Ovals is usually good so I reckon I'm up for this. I mean, it'd be great to have an Empty Box simulcast but whatevs.

The commentators may not have vocalised it, but anyone near O'Ward was most definitely in the Danger Zone

A.  Not his debut, but you'd have to pay attention to know that.

B.  He may be a generational talent, as evidenced by his performance in actual cars at the COTA test and the degree of interest Team Penske has in him, to the extent that allegedly one of its other drivers may be expendable at season's end, if there is a season.   :well:

C.  It's simulated racing.  Any comparison with skill in actual cars may be as relevant as comparing the driver's bowling scores to rate their actual prowess, or counting Sage Karam's Astor Cups.

Given Dixon's comments about the issues between the real car, the real simulator, and iRacing; I wonder if there's a small premium to less experienced guys racing these things. No 'bad habits' in an iRacing sense. Might explain why some of the Young'uns are doing really well in the NASCAR series. They haven't been driving the real cars for hundreds of races?

Notwithstanding what Dixon said, I thought he did very well last weekend, considering he was new to it, and wouldn't be surprised to see him much nearer the front over the next few weeks.
