Wondered if I could look at any old list of random racing drivers and came up with :-

Good call MCS but I can't work out whether Paul Tracy ever raced at Le Mans. He certainly raced sports cars.

Correct, the names I started with all started the 1984 Le Mans 24 Hours, the second names were just the second names SKAIK there is no connection between aside from being racing drivers ;-)

i)  Yes, the World Champions are Stewart, Rindt, Fittipaldi, Hill, Lauda, Scheckter and Surtees.

 

ii)  And the GP winners are Regazzoni, Reutemann, Cevert, Watson, Peterson, Pace, Depailler, Siffert, Jabouille, Beltoise...and Jochen Mass..of course, thanks. I was picturing him losing out unluckily at the Nurburgring in 76, forgetting that he had won the truncated race at Montjuich in 75.

 

iii) Elford fourth, at Rouen in 1968...interesting, see below...  But there is another driver who went one better than Vic, and finished third on his GP debut.

 

iv) Yes JP Jarier. Was stroking it home in Brazil (Shadow 1975) and Canada (Lotus 1978) but his luck ran out, on both occasions.

 

v) Not Jaussaud, although I think he did have some good drives at Rouen. This driver never reached Jaussaud's heights.

Wisell for the debut third-placer. I ended up with eight world champions. I was convinced Brabham had raced there in 1970. I remembered photos of him. I was positive ... But no, I must have been thinking of Pau. (Hey, I’m a poet ... )

Still no idea about the hero of Rouen.

Bravo to the bard from Bristol. Yes, Reine Wisell finished third on debut for Lotus, at Watkins Glen in 1970.

 

Perhaps in 1970 Jack raced less in F2 and more in sports cars, given his contract with Matra. Ickx, Quester and the BMWs weren't at Palace either in 1970.

 

As regards the last question, he might have bumped into Vic Elford at Rouen, but only in the paddock, not the race.

The driver in question was at Palace in one of these years but didn't qualify for his heat, so he didn't 'race'. Apologies. I'll modify the question.

Probably yes. He did win F3 in 68 though in F2 he was a flop at the circuit, one DNQ and a stop for being too slow after 2 laps. Bad cars, I guess

Yes, Tim, that's the man. French/Polish I believe, from a line of Polish aristocrats. Surprise win at the 1968 Rouen F3 race. I heard him referred to as PO-TOCKI, but I guess that it might really have been pronounced PO-TOSKI.

Excellent. All of them correct.

I am not sure if Tommy "Slim" Borgudd actually played drums on Waterloo, or if he was a drummer at other sessions only, but you got what I intended

 

Keep Your distance added because of Corona virus (and I love RT's music) He said "I wish they wouldn't call me Dick". For the dentist, that was no problem though

America's own Mark Donohue was also third in his first GP, Canada in '72.  Rained cats and dogs.  I read that before the race Stewart was asked about Donohue's chances and the reply was something to the effect that we know what he's capable of and won't be surprised by anything he does here.

That was a great drive in Canada, Dave. We read so much about Donohue but didn't see a lot of him over here. I think I only ever saw him race once, at Silverstone, in the 1975 British GP. Very sadly a month later he was gone.

 

As you probably realised, Reine Wisell was the correct answer above because he was racing at the F2 Crystal Palace meeting in 1971.

Richard Thompson also shares a name with a regular UK hillclimber (Mallock-mounted usually). I think he, too, is/was a Doctor; an anaesthetist?

But that doesn't help with the question...

 

Could the missing co-driver be Jacky Ickx? (shared the Mirage at Spa and - a bit tenuous this one - stood on the podium with Pedro in Grands Prix!).

Otherwise, was Hugh Dibley ever a teammate of Ickx?

Of course it was (1971) - good spot Tim. Mark in that good-looking blue Penske McLaren.

 

Strange coincidence re Wisell! I never saw any of the 1968/69 F3 in Britain but have since seen the odd report with Peterson, Schenken, Wisell and Alan Rollinson often up at the front. Interesting how their careers differed from 1970 onwards.

I don't believe so. He did do about 2 weeks of testing with the McLaren F1 team in 1971, running at Silverstone and Goodwood. This was just before the Mosport debut.

No it was not Ickx. Tim Murray answered correctly that Pedro's co-driver, on one occasion only, was Dr. Richard K. "Dick" Thompson, an american dentist. The link with the musician is that they were both called Richard Thompson (as far as I know really the only link), though one didn't mind being called Dick while the other hated it.

John, you are too kind.  No, I just didn't read the original question thoroughly!

 

Thanks also to Tim for correcting me on the year.  I certainly should have known better.  Bad day I suppose.  Or departing brain cells.

 

I often wondered if Wisell's F1 career might have been more successful if his teammate had not won that USGP.  Third in your first GP is pretty impressive.  Should have bode well for the future.  Perhaps F1 at the time didn't really have room for two Swedes.  Or perhaps it was a matter of Chapman not having room for two potential winners.  Or maybe Wisell's career was right where it should have been. 

 

His sideburns, however, were as good as anyone's.
