Long time Miami-based racer Ray Mummery passed away April 17th, age 87.  He was a physician who in the 1960s volunteered as an emergency doctor at South Florida SCCA races and more than one racer owed their life to him.  But Ray also decided that the best way to see a race was from behind the steering wheel.  He raced a wide variety of formula cars and sports racers, participating in the 24-hours of Daytona, 12-hours of Sebring and many SCCA races in the southeast USA.  His shop, Miami Auto Racing  was usually crowded with his own cars chosen either for speed or rarity.  He was still competing in his 80s with a Jaguar XK-140 and a Miata spec-racer.  He was happily married to Flora for 35 years and will be missed by all who knew him.

Ray was spared from the current pandemic, but Thursday after a pleasant day and dinner with friends he called it a night and never woke up.

A celebration of Ray's life will be held at the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club in late summer or early fall.

I’m very sorry to know this. I saw him race many times.

Sincere condolences.
