It's that time of the week again, with another public vote to determine the classic race to be broadcast next Wednesday.  The 1987 British Grand Prix has been removed as a contender (boo hiss!) and now we have a choice of three rather chaotic and unpredictable races instead:

  • 1982 Monaco Grand Prix
  • 1999 Australian Grand Prix
  • 1999 European Grand Prix

Which will you vote for?

just saw this yesterday on Sky F1-thought it was called the Luxenbourg GP at the time

Anyone got any films of SwissGP 1950-54?

I never saw Australia 99 so I'm voting for that. I definitely did see Nurburgring 99 and it's often referenced so I'm less fussed about it. Too young to have seen Monaco 82, but it's another cliche choice.

Mexico 1990 if I had the choice. Arguably Alain Prosts finest performance (and he has alot of those) and arguably the greatest pass of all time by Mansell. An underrated classic race.

Europe 99 definitely. 3 way championship battle, crazy weather, spins, reliability problems, bad pit stops, tears!

You couldn't ask for more.

Eddie Irvine must've bribed them to do so.

Surely Eddie would be bribing them to put it against lesser known races to increase the chance of it being shown.

If Monaco 82 is the winner will the race be the full race and not an edited highlights replay?

None of those races evoke much passion in me. Someone mentioned Mexico 1990, I’ll take it. Or maybe Silverstone 88.

I count four cars not sponsored by cigarettes.

Which side of the 1999 BAR do you think of as the real livery, and which do you consider the imposter? For me it's definitely Lucky Strike. The 555 side is nice but I just can't process it.

Lucky Strike for Villeneuve's car, 555 for Zonta's, as per livery launch.

Hey, Arrows were (minor) sponsored by Zepter, the guys who these days buy all that advertising hoarding near the tunnel at Monaco and every year I wonder what they do and then forget. Coffee machines or printing, I don't know.

e. I looked it up (not for the first time) and their wikipedia page just raises more questions:

Products Cooking dishes, Cleaning systems, Purification systems, Medical products, Cosmetics, Exclusive items[clarification needed]

The Wikipedia page doesn't really shed much light:

In the 1980s, Philip Zepter along with his wife left Belgrade and moved to Austria.[2] There, Zepter worked as distributor of German kitchen utensil manufacturer "AMC International AG" and soon became one of the company's executives. After five years of working in "AMC International AG", he invented special utensil cover and patented as "Zepter utensils".[2] In 1986, Zepter along with his wife founded "Zepter International" and in the following years made a breakthrough in the market.[2]

Zepter International began distributing worldwide stainless steel cookware and tableware accessories, manufactured in its own plant in Milan, Italy since 1990.[2] In 1996, Zepter Group acquired two companies, based in Switzerland, and thus branched out into the markets of light therapy medical devices (by the purchase of Bioptron AG, Wollerau and cosmetics (through Intercosmetica Neuchâtel SA, Neuchâtel).

After these investments the company's headquarters moved to Switzerland. Later on "Zepter Finance Holding AG" was established, providing services in the fields of private pensions, health care, insurance and property. As of 2016, "Zepter International" has operations in more than 60 countries worldwide.[1] In June 2017, the company celebrated its 30-year anniversary.[3]

I imagine them to be a sort of high-end Swiss version of Trotters Independent Traders.

Ah, Nurburgring '99. Pedro Diniz on the roof, Coulthard and Fisichella spinning out from the lead.

Tears from Badoer and Ralf's first victory prevented by mysterious puncture.

And Ferrari pitstop of course.

Sorry for spoilers.

With their focus on Monte Carlo, I see darker parallels. You know how when James Bond is undercover, he often poses as a representative from Universal Exports? Zepter sounds like where Blofeld says he works when he's doing the same thing.

They'd been on the car since 1997 too, which by my reckoning makes them one of the team's longest sponsor partnerships in the TWR era.

I know most of us probably have a naturally affinity for the era we grew up with, but I really do think those late 90s-early 2000s cars were beautiful, especially compared to some of the modern day monstrosities. Although maybe one day someone growing up in this era will be writing on a forum of the future saying how beautiful the early Halo-equipped cars were...

When I was growing up in the 1990s, post-communist Poland, Zepter was really popular as the cookware to have. Pretty much a household name back then (I mean, so much so that it's still firmly embedded in my memory) but I can't remember why exactly it was such a phenomenon.

Definitely the lucky strike side. Would of been better as an entire car livery. Shame in my ways they couldn't do what they did at the car reveal where they had one car in each livery. But obviously understandable why they couldnt do it

Understandable in the sense that there was a rule against it, but completely incomprehensible as to why the rule exists in the first place.

What was the exact reason for the rule against it?
I always thought it was to stop drivers getting confused by what team was behind them on track as such

The F1TV commentary for this race de-syncs about an hour through the race. Hopefully the digital F1 folk have solved it.

I don't think any reason was given other than vague implications of uniformity. I don't see why a driver could get confused in such a situation, or indeed why that would be a problem, unless he's planning on acting in an unsportsmanlike behaviour. Otherwise marshal's flags and team signals would be enough for him.

I've seen some suggest it's for the fans, but maybe I just have a higher opinion of motor racing fans than the powers at be. Football fans can cope with both different strips for their team at home and away games and different strips for different players on the pitch at the same time (goalkeeper and the rest). I don't think I'm being controversial by saying the average F1 fan is a lot more intelligent than the average football fan.

Edit: Most racing series don't have such a rule and I don't think it's ever been a problem.

Both halfs of the BAR livery was IMO much better than anything BAR ran afterwards.

And by the way, drivers' overalls had the adverts team had planned to have. Villeneuve was in full Lucky Strike overalls, Zonta (and Salo when subbing) full 555. Mechanics had shared ones:

The Grand Prix authorities had previous: there used to be a rule that you had to run with your car painted in the team's national colours, after all. I wonder if anyone ever got disqualified over that.

Yes it was strange because I remember in 1999 even tho separate car liverys was banned the drivers villeneuve and zonta had there different race overalls still. Villeneuve had the lucky strike overalls and zonta the blue 555

I associate 555 far more with Subaru and rallying than I do with F1. It's a sponsor that's easy to forget that they ever were in F1.

Somehow Rob Walker got away with breaking that rule all the time, painting his cars in French colours.

IMO the 555 half was better. But ultimately we did swap two pretty liveries for one unappealing mess.

I always see the Lucky Strike side as the dominant side too. They ran the 555 livery in full years and years later in a free practice with Anthony Davidson, didn’t they?

Maybe because Lucky Strike was on the "racier" left side of the car, which you typically see the most on clockwise circuits.

In China, where the 555 brand was stronger than Lucky Strike.

Ant had a few interesting one off, third car liveries in 2004.

It's massively out of sync for a 16 minute period, in which two of the race's most dramatic moments occur. It would be a massive own-goal if they didn't spot it.

I've fired off some emails but I'm not very hopeful.

Slightly OT but ...

I started watching in 2007 and so my idea of "an F1 car" is narrow-body, boxy proportions and grooved tyres, something that dates back to 1998. I remember when slicks came back in 2009 and they were just so ... bare?! I still don't really enjoy the chunky rear tyres, to be honest.

Anyway, I've started an actual, proper, full-length F1 rewatch, starting with 1998 because it just feels right.

I finished the full season yesterday (loved it) and then woke-up to the horror of ex-Autosport Matt Beer's headline "WHY I HATED: THE 1998 F1 SEASON" !!
