Malcolm is building a new hillclimb car. I thought some on here could be interested. His latest video is this one:

Some good insights there. Most importantly - a lot of the things that get knickers in a twist are not worth bothering about on a race car. eg roll centre migration, Ackerman.

Disagree with this:

. . . steering weight isn't a function of caster angle, its a function of trail . . .

Unless the scrub radius is zero, its a function of both. The "weight jacking with lock" adds to steering weight.

He has such a calm, therapeutic tone. Watched all of them whilst cooking dinner this evening. Lovely.

I share his disdain for kinematic roll centres and why worrying about their migration is pointless. BTW, this book has some good maths and discussion on why the confusion about roll centres has arisen: https://www.amazon.c...s/dp/0128126930

I think the point about caster affecting SWT is that it cancels across the car.

steering wheel torque. Everything is a three letter acronym! Even yaw velocity is YAW, so I'm glad i don't have to talk about Yaw much, to those people.

I haven't watched every video but I wonder if he has read the CAMS manual prior to starting? A couple of years ago they changed the Formula Libre rules and as I understand them,16mm wheel tethers are now required amongst other things. It seems ludicrous to me as Formula Libre cars are most likely competing at Hillclimbs where spectator attendance is minimal compared to a V8 supercar meeting and as far as I'm aware the V8's don't require wheel tethers. I read into it that CAMS are trying to stamp out home built Specials, although the loophole may be that if you build a Sports car you don't need to go to the same lengths?

On my reading the requirement for tethers is for Formula Libres in Race events,  not Speed events so Malcolm's car should be ok if he sticks to hillclimbs and sprints.
