This weekend's Classic F1 race features the 2012 European Grand Prix at Valencia, surely the circuit's most exciting race and one of Alonso's finest performances on home soil.

Could there be any significance in the timing, with a Renault seat available...?

It's a reminder that Maldonado is available.

Fantastic race in a fantastic season. The race started off quite slowly if I recall but boy did it get better as the race went on. Also I remember this race because in Q2 Alonso was only 0.2 off the fastest time and still got eliminated that is unheard off especially today.

This race still triggers me, for a number of reasons.

Best sectors from qualifying tell you how close it was.

Ahh, that glorious year where for many races, we had no idea who'd win.

I know it wasn't perfect, but I'd take it over what we've had more recently in a heartbeat.

Timo Glock became ill and he didn't take part in qualifying and is not racing either. Marussia didn't have eligible reserve driver so there will be 23 drivers on the grid.

Oh now this one I can’t wait for, legitimately. This was a great race on a track I always really liked even though nobody else did. And 2012 is my favourite season of the last ten years.

I remember who won, I remember Grosjean briefly threatening to win, I remember the Hamilton/Maldonado crash, but that’s about it.

I’ll be there with bells on.

There was an incredible battle between what seemed like half the field for about 3 laps from about lap 17 - fond memories of this one!

Somehow I was expecting Ben Edwards and David Coulthard on commentary.

Bum cam. For some reason the middle aged photographers kept their t-shirts on in the pool.

I liked the V10 sound but I can take or leave these V8s.

The V8 in sound were nothing special, people went absolute mental because we went hybrid of course, but I never had that wow factor already with the quiet V8's.

Great move by Grosjean, shame you wouldn’t see that now with it being okay to shove someone on the outside off the road if they aren’t ahead.

Great race so far. Can't believe Valencia was producing a great race considering the bore fast of 09,10,11. There must have been at least 10 cars in that train behind Schumacher.

Alonso was a monster in this race pretty much the perfect race from him with some outstanding overtakes. I felt really bad for Grosjean as he had a superb weekend, as I support team enstone I was gutted as feel he could have won the car was definitely good enough to win.

Looking back on it I don't think the crash at the end was entirely Maldonado's fault. He was over the kerbs with nowhere to go.

Shame Grosjean broke down could have been a pretty fun battle for the win.

I love when the constructors' trophy recipient on the podium fits with the storyline and that race was surely one of those with Andrea Stella working with all top three drivers.

I always give up trying to analyse these moves in F1 because it's always the case that one driver has pushed the other one off the edge of the track, and the other driver has been taking liberties barging his car somewhere it shouldn't be and forcing avoiding action.

But ultimately it was Maldonado who was trying to pass, and Maldonado who understeered into the side of Lewis.

Yeah, I agree it was his fault (should have gone over the chicane rather than attempting to rejoin the track, should have bided his time overtaking Hamilton since the McLaren had no rear tyres left) but it's much more of a minor, racing incident-type mistake than I remembered. I seem to recall at the time there was a thread on this board calling for him to receive a race ban, which would have been very harsh after this incident.

Maldonado had a number of incidents in 2012 and with current penalty points system he might have well got a ban. But I see only serious one was the incident with Perez at Monaco. Of course depending how much he would have changed his driving after racking multiple penalties.

Here's how I would rate the events considering penalty points.

Collided with Perez in Monaco FP - 3 points

Collided with Hamilton in Valencia - 2 points

Collided with Perez in Silverstone - 2 points

Collided with di Resta in Hungaroring - 2 points

Impeding Hülkenberg in Spa - 1 point

Jump start in Spa - 2 points

Collision with Glock in Spa - 2 points

That would make it a total of 14 which is over the 12 points needed for ban.
