Monaco authorities have confirmed that roads will be closed to motorised and pedestrian traffic between 6.45am and 9am on the morning when the Monaco Grand Prix was supposed to take place.
Lelouch shot to fame in 1976 when he released a short movie that captured a high-speed drive across Paris.
The nine-minute blast across the French capital was done in a single take without special effects, using a camera that was strapped to the front of Lelouch's own Mercedes 450 SEL.
Beginning in Porte Dauphine, and featuring some close calls as the car tops 145mph at times through the city streets, the film ends with the driver meeting his girlfriend at the famous Sacre Coeur basilica.

Cool. Although if you’re going to do these things, you should do ‘em properly. I know it would have meant moving heaven and earth and all, but imagine how cool this would be in today’s Paris.  Still, it’s something, and I’m interested in this diversion.

I will defer to your knowledge but I’d like to think the people of Paris could come together to enjoy the spectacle of a young guy driving a fast car extremely quickly around the city. It would be something to look forward to!

There is an anti polution and pro clean air agenda. Beiing pro clean air and anti polution doesn't mean that you're automatically anti cars.

 

I'm an environmentalist but I also happen to love cars, it's not a contradiction. I'm also in favour of car free city centers because of the quality of the air and it's just not enjoyable to walk in a shopping street inhaling fumes and avoiding traffic at the same time, I prefer to walk in the street without breathing poluted air (in particular the small particles that cause heart attacks in the long run) and that has all to do with caring about my health and quality of living, not with hating cars. 

It's quite a simplistic thing you're saying there and very black and white.

I watched that video last night on youtube ... There were times when it appeared he was going pretty fast, but most of the time it seemed like he wasn't going that much faster than the cars around him, and that the car wasn't going nearly as fast as the faux engine sounds would make it seem. Running all those red lights was definitely not safe, however.

Remember that it was filmed in 76 in a single cut without any special effects. Pretty bonkers if you think about it.

Yeah it's a cool shot. It just didn't really seem all that insanely fast most of the time ... esp not as fast as it sounded.

Yeah I know. My point is that from what I can tell, a huge fuss has been made over the speeds at which the driver drove. For the most part, it just doesn't look all that fast, esp in relation to the cars he's passing, etc.

Yeah, the low mounting point for the camera and the fake audio combine to give the impression (to the uninitiated) of much greater speed. 145mph my a**e.

Lelouch drove really fast in the original. There's an analysis of the film which uses both the images and the known distances between points on the map to calculate his speed. There was no regard for speed limits. The *AVERAGE* speed for the entire drive was over 50mph with some sections certainly taken at close to 100mph....though 146mph is likely false...maybe km/h

 

And while I fully support any new film being made with the proper permissions and closed roads....no such film can ever match C'etait un Rendez-vous. It will remain a remarkable piece of celluloid shot in one continuous shot with no effects other than the dubbed engine.

Maybe it's because I'm a mere 33 years young, but the dubbed engine sound is really jarringly wrong and it just feels slow. Perhaps it looked amazing back when it was made but as someone who's grown up on real on board footage, all I can muster is a, "So what?". Not impressed.

Welp ... sorry man. When I posted about that, we were having some wifi problems during my wife's Zoom meeting with the other teachers. It was pretty much all I could even do to just make the post. Hell, I could barely load a speedtest page, much less Youtube.

I can remember the rumours about this mythical film, hushed whispers in the motorsport community that this was a special work of art, the most astonishing expression of speed, perhaps Ickx was driving, perhaps Lafitte, perhaps it was a 250GTO, but it was being passed around like the Derek & Clive tapes, or the Great White Wonder, a secret known only to the trusted cognoscenti.

Other than this, it seems to me that speeds are not real, but played is fast motion. But as Austin F1 and Risil said, it captures well the air of Paris in the early morning.

Having previously lived in Paris for a while, I fell in love with C'était un rendez-vous upon seeing it. There is something quite liberating about seeing the city approached as if there are no rules. It's certainly not a nice city to drive, and quite rightly there is an increasing push to remove cars from the city centre (Rue de Rivoli has just become car-free). Seeing the Arc de Triomphe, Place de la Concorde, the Louvre, the Palais Garnier and Sacré-Cœur in eight minutes is something you'll never accomplish today.

You could have probably done it quite safely at the height of the recent lockdown, if the empty roads here in the UK were anything to go by.

Haha, true, but given how strictly lockdown has been enforced in Paris, you would probably have been greeted at Sacré-Cœur by numerous police officers instead of the lovely lady Lelouch encountered

If it was Charles racing around to pick up Prince Albert to race to the florist and then to rendezvous with Princess Charlotte then that would probably have worked, but there was no story here, the florist was an odd eye candy addition...

 

I appreciate that they've tried something for our entertainment however and can't blame Charles for his part in this...
