Formula 1 will be streaming the 1999 Australian Grand Prix this evening, which I'm sure will be good news to the various users here who indicated that it was their preferred option in previous polls.

I'm assuming that these events will be discontinued soon, as the delayed 2020 season gets underway, so let's enjoy them!

Aus99-Grid.png

Ludicrous margin from the McLarens

A tremendous leap up the grid from Stewart after a paltry 5 points last season

Jordan continue their good form from the end of 1998

An inauspicious start from both Williams and Zanardi

And somehow, I don't think BAR are going to win their first race

I made this one when it was one of the options a few races ago.

Some really big gaps between teammates up and down the field. Except for Arrows, where Takagi and De la Rosa have achieved virtually the same laptime. I like this Pedro Diniz turning up at Jean Alesi's team and putting half a second on him in the first qualifying session of the year.

Presumably Panis and Gene ran into problems on Saturday?

Olivier Panis reportedly had gearbox problems on his race car and made a late switch to the spare before running out of time.

It must have been slightly depressing to see the Mclarens a second quicker than everyone else. Behind them it's really quite close.

Impressive quali from Barrichello and not a bad debut from BAR too.

Time-jump!

Here's Andy Green speaking about Jacques' qualifying lap with a gearbox that almost broke in two.

If somebody told me after this qualifying that Eddie Irvine(!!!) will miss out the WDC against a McLaren by 3 points, well...

As a thirteen year old I remember being utterly dejected after qualifying here.

McLaren are actually somehow even further ahead than last year. How is that even possible for God’s sake? Ferrari almost got them last year, I was hoping for a continuation of Hakkinen vs Schumacher on level terms, not more dull silver and black demo runs.

Benetton, I had such hope in their Front Torque Transfer system, it was going to catapult my two favourite drivers Fisi and Wurz right up the grid and yet they’re not as fast as last year and miles off the front.

Williams haven’t found their frontrunning pace again either, and Damon is way further back than I’d hoped. Frentzen being up in fifth is a fluke as is Barrichello in fourth. We’re in for a dull season and I’m gonna go and sleep till midday because I’m annoyed I got up for that.

Difficult build-up for McLaren; both cars requiring last-minute attention.

I re-watched 1998 in full recently, and I'm vaguely familiar with 1999, and the amount of aborted starts was ridiculous.

A hardly mentioned aspect of the hybrid cars is that they can self start, so stalled cars on the grid aren't a problem.

Not depressing at all.

It's also a better system that they go directly to the new warm-up lap instead of all mechanics coming back.

I watched this race a few weeks ago, and I was screaming at my TV for Schumacher to rejoin in 3rd, because he wasn't passed by every single car, because of Takagi!!

Surprised me Murray and Brundle didn't notice.

Maybe the rules were different.

There is no way that this is a coincidence that F1 Rewind has picked another race with an interminable non-start.

Takagi doesn't count because he also got stuck. Schumacher would not have been allowed to regain his position just because someone else got stuck. The rules are the same and have not changed.

A black circle to confirm that the car is fitted with tyres.

Ferrari could have used that at the Nurburgring.

God I love this era. It makes me feel so nostalgic. Seeing that bright red Ferrari squirming around ahead of the bright yellow Jordan, F1 in these days was so vivid and even the grass at Albert Park looks a special shade of green and the sky a particularly nice shade of blue.

Ah, so you're the reason we now get all these complaints about the wide shots on TV.

What do Ferrari even expect if such a protest were upheld? There ain't going to be a restart now.

Schumacher struggled to start again at the race start, so it wouldn't have made much difference in his resulting position (and would have been more dangerous).

This was the period when the world feed onboard coverage was limited to encourage people to subscribe to F1 Digital Plus.
