It's almost time for the Le Mans 24 Hours
The only difference is that: this June, it will be Virtual!

THE GREATEST SIMRACE
IN HISTORY

EZ7d-EBCX0-AE8-Cl-M.jpg

History will be made on the virtual tarmac of Le Mans.
This is going to be the biggest e-vent by a country mile: just look at the Lineup!

Nearly 200 drivers, 50 cars.
Names like Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, Charles Leclerc, & tons of other GT & Prototype drivers, along with some of the best simdrivers on the planet.
Every team will have 4 drivers. 2 of them will be Real Drivers, the other two, simracers.
I mean, look at that lineup! It's crazy!!

24 HOURS OF RACING
EVERYTHING CAN HAPPEN

Maximum realism: no compromise for this event.
This means: Real Time Weather, Day/Night Cycle, Full Damage, Mechanical Damage, Driver Swaps.

Anything can happen in this race. With 50 cars on track, the slightest of the mistakes can lead into a retirement for the whole team.

THE TRACK
AS TRICKY AS IN REAL LIFE

LeMans-trackmap-1024x835.png

The drivers will face many of the real life threats of Le Mans.
Unpredictable Weather changes, the darkness of the Night, Heavy Traffic.

https://www.youtube....h?v=EaBKO5HlO_s

Also the Virtual Le Mans Track is super accurate. Every bump, every kerb or runoff is the exact replica of the Original RaceTrack.
Who will be the Master of the Night?

Is the Le Mans track on rFactor 2 laser scanned?

It looks like everyone's using the same prototype in the premier class, but there's multiple models in the GT class. Have they been BOP'd?

Yes, the track was scanned in 2018 and visually updated a couple days ago.

The reason that everyone is using the Oreca 07 is that is is the only LMP available in rFactor.

GTE recieved a BOP update last weekend, I guess we have to wait and see how good it actually is.

I think all cars are in use except the BMW M8, I heard they were not invited to participate because they pulled out of WEC.

Yep. Last year.

I was wondering if they would have a similar schedule to the real thing (3x quali, mandatory night practice, etc), but seems not.

On the prototypes what catches my eye is clearly Verstappen/Norris/Kerkhof/Huttu. 2 F1 drivers known to be keen simracers, and 2 of the most famous simracers.

On the GTs I'm not super familiar with many simracer names, but the teams that are catching my eye are Leclerc/Giovinazzi/Bonito/Tonizza and Lotterer/Jani/DeJong/Pietila. I've heard of Bonito and de Jong, and the real driver pedigree of Leclerc/Giovinazzi (both young active F1 drivers) and Lotterer/Jani (huge endurance specialist) are obvious.

Like many I'll be following particularly closely Jimmy Broadbent on the GTs as he's a fun youtuber to watch.

And the Leclerc team for GTE.

Lando said Max hasn't done any practice yet. Not sure if I believe him!

Naturally going all in supporting car #7 and full full on car # 64 - and I really hope car # 50 will be competitive.

While the F1 virtual events have had a high profile so far, they've been somewhat less-than-serious, with damage turned off and 'celebrity' drivers (mainly footballers) getting in the way.  By contrast, this event should be as close a simulation of the usual 24H du Mans as is possible with contemporary processing power.  This may well see simulator racing earn more widespread respect, IMO.

There's very few actual parallels other than its a 24h race on the La Sarthe circuit.

This is 1 grid an invite only event. The iRacing event is open to anyone with an iRacing account that meets the (low) entry requirements with grids split according to iRating*.

*can of worms

iRacing’s event is also nothing new. They run it every year like they do with their Indy 500. Only this year have these things become more widely known.

Shame as I like the aesthetics of iRacing but it’s the drivers that matter. I have no interest in watching some kid in mums back bedroom.

I kind of agree with Jon.

I like the Broadbent guy, but...he's still a just gamer, in the end.

Im watching beacause there are like more than 100 real life, top notch drivers.

That's what makes this event really interesting, different & spicy.

Simracing has been around for the last decade and basically not a lot of people cared about it before this Pandemic.
I did simracing myself, and enjoyed doing it very much!!

But watching other simracers guys driving in a virtual race, has zero appeal to me.

I'd be watching even if I'd never heard of Jimmy thanks to the depth of the field, but I identify with some of his mental health problems, having anxiety myself, and I like the fact that he takes the mick out of himself, so I will be following the #67.

I kinda get both sides of this argument? I think eSports are piss boring and can't watch those high level F1 simraces at all, it's so robotic, artifficial and dull.

However random guys like Jimmy and a couple of others are fun to watch on youtube, not quite for the high standards of driving, but more because they're relatable and they are also professional entertainers. Streamers can be a bit too childish at times but it's really all about entertainment and not as much about sheer performance itself.

As for this event, it's unquestionably important because there's 2 F1 champions, god knows how many other F1 race winners, Le Mans winners, Indy 500 winners etc etc, it's by a long distance the most insane simrace grid I've ever seen. But I think it'd be just a tiny bit less interesting if it didn't have all the Huttus and Atzes and these simrace experts. There's this excitement of how will the real racers perform vs them, who can match their pace? So in a bizarre way the "kids in their mom's bedroom" actually add quite a bit of interest here.

Endurance events have their own particular charm too. A 24h simrace isn't a new concept anymore in 2020 but it's still nuts. You can't expect lots of close wheel-to-wheel racing because it's endurance, you can't expect the mechanical reliability test because this isn't a real battle between manufacturers, cars don't have mechanical failures, but the time lenght itself makes it a huge survival test either way. I'm not going to watch the full 24 hours or anything, but I bet it's going to be pretty entertaining to follow online, because there's so many people involved that broadcasters can chat with, and I bet there'll be tons of streams from several different teams etc. These special events are different, even ordinary ones like iRacing's 24h of Le Mans, they are different from common simraces, more watchable. Throw a long list of some of the finest real drivers on the globe on it, and of course it's got to be even more interesting.

The mixed teams is really interesting, but I wish it was slightly better balanced.

I would've preferred if there were a few more gentleman sim-racers spread across each team, just to equalise things. This includes real-life drivers who aren't living on sims.

It would've added a little bit of jeopardy by removing the "robotic" element you referenced.

What we have is still really good, though.

If you are aware of the ACO outside of the virtual world, you know this is very ON brand sadly. It's the same reason the LMP1 class has been through so much.  So nothing unexpected really  .

Not sure I really like that Redline car. I mean, it's inside (but not totally within the spirit of the) rules, but it's also not a team or car, or drivers that participated in WEC or Le Mans at all. Especially with actual race teams on the reserve list, and BMW not being able to participate due to not doing it IRL.
The Penske car is also a bit iffy due to that, yes it is an IMSA car, and it is 4 real life drivers, but we got Risi and Kessel on the reserve list, I cannot help feel that those teams would be more "right" to have in the event, also to beef up the GT field a tiny bit.

I totally do see why both Redline and Penske are allowed to participate though, the PR and so on.

It's been 3 years since I last did a 24hrs of Le Mans on rFactor 2 now, and it's really fun to see multiple names I drove against back then, in this race. Also a bit "ugh"(in the lack of a better word), when I see simracers I've been racing against and beaten for years being a part of this, while I kinda stopped 3 years ago.

Oh well. Gonna be a fun weekend! :D

On a sidenote; We had very few tech issues during the endurance season in 2017, it was a lot of work to host it, but it wasn't much issues. I would think that Studio 397 have been able to fix stuff, not at least because many of the guys working on it, have been racing in the same series for years, and are true rFactor/rFactor 2 endurance racers.

Seems like an insult that Risi is on the reserve list when they are a confirmed entry for the actual event in September.

I have never heard of such blatant antagonism by the ACO in all my years  . They are really putting the screws to this BMW ordeal. I don't understand why both sides are so bitter.
