Hate to bring this news, but
https://firenze.repu...ardi-259665276/
(Sorry, source in Italian. La Repubblica is a highly reliable source though)

Apparently, he was hit by a truck during a handbike event. He has been taken to Siena hospital in serious conditions.
No other info at the moment.

Will try to update, hoping for the best

Only yesterday was I listening to his appearance on Tom Clarkson's podcast. Time to defy the odds again, Alex!

If anyone is tough enough to beat something like that, it's Alex Zanardi.

This is horrifying news but thank you for letting us know. I'm sure we're all going to be wishing this amazing man well.

As a general observation, I'm sure we can all sadly remember seeing updates from previous serious accidents that were rushed out and were either sadly too optimistic or turned out to be just not true.  Not doubting the story,  just saying it will pay to be cautious with any updates that may be floating around twitter for the next few hours.

I agree, and I only posted it after seeing confirmations from multiple reliable journalistic sources.
Will do the same with updates.

Was just listening to his podcast as well...   praying for Alex...

Never forget running into him at the Road America indycar race with his young son on his shoulders- could have never imagined what was going to happen in the next few weeks-  9/11 and then his accident.

If anyone can defy the odds it's him.

How on earth was that road open for traffic on the opposite lane during a sporting competition? Alex, you are a hero and an inspiration, and deserve much better than this...

Alex is one of those few men in the world who anyone can agree upon that they admire him for who he is, what he does and what challenges he has overcome. He has fought many of them, let's hope he wins this challenge as well. Forza Alex!

From La Repubblica:

"I can say that when he was taken away with the helicopter rescue he was breathing, even if panting. He was with a group of friends but only he was injured in the impact. "

Apparently he lost control of his handbike on the downhill, rolled twice & crashed into a Truck that was coming in the opposite direction.

But according to the latest reports he was conscious & breathing after the incident!

Fingers crossed for some good news later tonight

My opinion: it's phrases like these that better can be kept away until official news reports do confirm this. It adds to the gossip/rumors.

Well, Zanardi's coach Mario Valentini reported that.

He was on the scene of the accident.

Fingers crossed!  :|

Update from the hospital:

Zanardi is currently undergoing a delicate brain surgery.

Obviously, the situation is critical.

Hospital bulletin, via Gazzetta, says Alex's condition is very serious due to a severe head injury and he is currently undergoing neurosurgery. Awful news, hoping for the best possible outcome in the circumstances.

Indeed, I remember reading that Schumacher was conscious and speaking to his son following his skiing accident, so I was very hopeful for the first couple of days after that accident.

How on earth was that road open for traffic on the opposite lane during a sporting competition? Alex, you are a hero and an inspiration, and deserve much better than this...

For longer distance cycling events, it's not uncommon to have "rolling closures" where only the direction of travel for the racers is closed via police escort, while the opposite lanes are open. I've done some road races on my bike where they enforce center-line rules meaning that you cannot cross over the middle of the road to overtake, as cars may be coming the opposite direction.

That said, if you have a fast downhill, it makes sense to me that you have to close the entire road because of the very obvious risk of a cyclist either misjudging a corner or having a mechanical failure. Straight, flat road, easy enough to stay in one lane, but not on a twisty fast section.
