Stupid.  That is the only way that I can describe my opinion of this.  This is headed for failure even before it starts.  What were these 2 thinking?

It's not stupid. It's just clearly aimed at a different demographic. I don't think I'd follow it, but I can imagine it would gain a fanbase.

What's next for these two? An announcement that this is only the feeder series for the all new E-Moped World Championship?

Serious question: why not?

Humans apparently race everything available to them and in almost every realistically imaginable way. Horses, camels, chariots, boats, bicycles, motorbikes, cars, planes...

Looking back at that 50cc stuff, why wouldn’t an eMoped championship work? Relatively cheap, fairly manageable levels of power even for amateurs, probably a common sight in cities already let alone the future. Given some design freedom true racers would probably add streamlining and go for max performance. I bet it would be great fun both to watch and to race.

Yes. So many people on this forum think that there is only one demographic that motorsport should be aimed at - the one they fall into.

That just brings to mind a racing series for these:

Which would be affordable in fairness.

These are not cheap!

I think that indicates the demographic that they are aiming at.  Stupid illiterates.  I struggle to think of anything in racing terms more lethal than this idea.   Makes the Isle of Man TT look positively benign.

I hear on the grapevine that the championship award will be the Darwin Trophy.  Awarded posthumously, naturally.

Oh good news, here I was thinking that it would be compulsory.  :cat:

Like the ridiculous virtue-signalling Extreme E,  this will be on my list of things to avoid, along with Aussie Rules football, anything involving Gordon Ramsay, Eastenders and Piers Morgan.

But think of the children.  Is no-one caring about the children?

E scooters are everywhere here, even I have one. Link scooters have hires available throughout town, just an app on the phone and away you go. Mine does 30kph, never seen one that does 100, like to try it though. Many people here are seriously pissed of with kids, there's a huge push going on for changes in the law.

I don’t know how much it would make people behave more irresponsibly with e-scooters, since you can always apply the same argument to cars and motorsport.

I’ve always been supportive of building skateparks or BMX tracks in our local area when the alternative has been participants finding unofficial locations and causing nuisance or harm. In my experience thats largely been successful in improving the area overall (and of course both of those are now Olympic sports).

I guess one point is that this whole thing takes it to city streets. Much of the real-life promo footage to date has been on kart tracks or veloparks… and I wouldn’t mind having reason to build more of them for the community to be honest. Cities generally all need better cycle/eMobilty infrastructure (especially the UK imho) and it’s not immediately clear how this supports that exactly.

E-scooters may one of those things where it’s here and there’s nothing we can do but work out how to make sure they’re used sensibly within appropriate laws and expectations. If done right, I do think legitimising the more irresponsible uses through sport can be a part of that.

But at the same time, this series hasn’t got (at least not to my knowledge) a grassroots base of organised e-scooter racing.

Jury’s out as far as I’m concerned.

I also wouldn't get your hopes up about it gaining much traction on this forum.

We're primarily a car racing forum. Even rallying doesn't get that much interest. Bike racing also has it's dedicated followers but not enough for more than a catch all thread and the GPs in individual threads. Other forms of motorsport don't have any presence here at all. Truck racing? Tractor pulling? Icelandic hill climbing? Powerboats? Air Racing?

Yeah, these scooters are motorised, so they technically do count as motorsport, and feel free to post about them. But I'd imagine most people will ignore it, and some people who don't watch but can't help to dump on anything they don't like will probably comprise about half the posts.

Wurz (47) and di Grassi (37) also come across as this guy:

Edit: Apart from the meme of course. That's aimed at the racing drivers who seem to be going through a mid-life crisis.

Extreme E has been brilliant so far tho, a nice surprise for me!

Proper motorsport action, drama & excitement.

This e-scooter thing, i fear it wont't be as interesting or relevant, but i'd be happy to be proven wrong!

See I was confused because I don’t really have any expectations or hopes. Since the concept was revealed, my interest level isn’t really much higher than mild curiosity of what two highly recognisable names in motorsports are up to with it and whether it’ll work or not.

I fear you may have mistaken me for a naïve idiot. Which is fine - happy to clarify.

In most places it is also illegal to use a racing kart on the road, but that's never stopped organised events.

In many places they're legal to own but heavily restricted in places which they can be used... and even despite that remain quite popular. Arguably an outlet of organised sporting events and/or accessible recreation tracks for use could be a good idea as a pressure release valve on anti-social/illegal usage.

The thing with this championship is that it is a very top-down implementation with, so far as I can see, little (if any) grassroots basis - possibly not immediately conducive to my previous point.

Well, someone's giving it ago - also launching this year is the EBK Grand Prix using a mixed-gender, city-centre, criterium-based e-bike cycling competition.

If it takes motorised competition to a whole new audience so much the better.

Recorded? I can't believe there isn't enough demand for this to be live on free-to-air TV.
