I've always been aware of this but never thought to question it until now we're in lockdown.

When Jacky Ickx drove for Ferrari in 1970, his 312B2 carried a yellow stripe along its side.

Why was this? Was it a stipulation in his contract? Would he only drive a car with it on? Any insight would be much appreciated.

Just a nod his nationality. Yellow being the Belgian racing colour.

I think so. He had those stripes in 1968 as well.

I just assumed it was due to the assigned Belgian racing colours of yellow, and nothing more, See the 156 F1 Ferrari Gendebien drove in 1961 Belgian GP..

Mart, the Ferrari was a 312B in 1970. The B2 came along in early 1971; Regazzoni at the Race of Champions I think.

In 1970 Ickx certainly had the yellow stripe at Spa but, as far as I can remember, not at most of the other races. Possibly not at any.

Coincidentally, today someone posted this photo on Facebook showing the Formula 2 Ferraris of de Adamich and Brambilla at Buenos Aires in 1968. The top of the cockpit surround on Brambilla's car was white, while de Adamich's was pale blue, reminiscent of the wheels on their F1 cars from a few years earlier. Maybe they were looking to add a little variety to all the green and red on the grid, but while Ickx's yellow stripes make perfect sense, I always thought that pale blue was a really random choice.

At Oulton Park in 1968 there were three Ferrari F1 312 entered, Amon in an all red version, Ickx with the yellow stripes and Derek Bell with Green stripes.

I believe that the addition of stripes was designed as a method of identification for the pit signalling crew.

In the mid-1980s, the #28 (Johansson, then Berger) would usually carry dayglo yellow squares on the rear wing for that reason.

And the 1972/73 Ferrari 312PB sports cars ran with different coloured stripes, presumably to help the pit crew identify them more easily.

The driver pairings changed from time to time in 1972 but, typically, Peterson/Schenken ran with a blue stripe, Ickx/Andretti with a yellow, and Regazzoni/Redman with a double white.

I was reminded of this while reading this thread.

I always assumed the yellow stripe on the Ickx car was due to his Belgian nationality.  Andretti did not drive the full season, so it was "Ickx's car".

The Peterson car had the blue stripe bordered with a thin yellow stripe, which would be the Swedish national colors.

Swiss colors are red and white, which would correspond to Regazzoni's national colors.

As you say, the driver pairings varied somewhat during the season - I seem to recall seeing pictures of the 312PB with a green/red/green stripe , perhaps a nod to Redman and Merzario's national racing colors?

The NART Ferraris typically had  combination white and dark blue stripes to indicate their American team ownership.

My bad! The 1970 car was a lovely purposeful looking machine wasn't it though?

The 1970 312B was, in my eyes, the most beautiful Grand Prix car ever!

The Eagle-Weslake just takes it for me but the 312B is such a purposeful design (theres a model of one on my desk right now) , form follows function and looks so right!  You can tell it was all the work of one man. There's a great documentary on Amazon about the restoration of one by Paola Barilla, well worth a watch.

The said yellow stripes were present at Monaco as well as Spa in 1970. I have a shot of Ickx practising in Belgium running the 312B wingless! Good luck with that Jacky!

Thanks Doug.

It's always a pleasure to see number 27 on a Ferrari being driven hard!

Only in one occasion, the Scuderia Ferrari entered four 312PB cars in one event in 1972, the 1000 Km of Zeltweg, penultimate round of the season. Jacky Ickx-Brian Redman won in the #1 car with yellow stripe and yellow rear wing; Helmut Marko-José Carlos Pace finished second in the #3 car with double white stripes and white rear wing; third was #2 Ronnie Peterson-Tim Schenken, with a blue, yellow-bordered stripe and blue rear wing; and fourth #4 Arturo Merzario-Sandro Munari, with green stripe and green rear wing.
