Welp

Following today’s announcement that Sergio Perez of the BWT Racing Point Formula 1 Team produced an inconclusive test result for COVID-19 at the Silverstone Circuit ahead of the 2020 FIA Formula 1 British Grand Prix, the FIA and Formula 1 can now confirm that the result of his re-test is positive.

Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities.

With assistance of the local organiser of the British Grand Prix, local health authorities and the FIA COVID-19 delegate, a full track and trace initiative has been undertaken and all close contacts have been quarantined.

The procedures set out by the FIA and Formula 1 have provided for swift containment of an incident that will have no wider impact on this weekend’s event.

Just saw this too...

That’s a tasty looking seat for whoever is now in for presumably the next 2 races!

Get well soon Sergio!

Let’s hope they’ve been following protocols fully, other drivers, mechanics etc will be nervous tonight -

Was he tested just after the Hungarian GP as well, seeing as he wasn’t feeling well?

That’s right; he was complaining during the weekend...

How do the 'bubbles' work exactly, can drivers see family, loved ones and friends in between races? If so then chances are it's one them that's passed it onto him.

Obviously, I hope he recovers. But if he caught it on a trip to Mexico, he's an idiot.

Yeah, though you usually don't test positive for several days after the first symptoms from what I've seen

So, everyone in his bubble is high risk. Only a matter of time before they announce half of Racing Point, maybe even Stroll is out surely.

Oh man. First of all: Get well, Sergio.

But also: Bummer for Racing Point, he is probably their more valuable driver. I am sorry for them, and I say this as a McLaren fan.

Will be a chance to see how the procedures will work now, let’s hope he recovers quickly and no other drivers have picked it up. Imagine if racing point are now riddled with it. I’d be a very nervous member of that team right now.

Best wishes to him.  Sadly, it was inevitable that a team member or driver would test positive at some time this season.

That sucks - hope he gets better quickly and same for any other teams members that may have been infected.

I assume it's a 14 day quarantine, which means he'll miss both Silverstone races?

The Hulk would be a good choice tbh - Vandoorne I don't think is around, as he's prepping for the FE races. My guess is it will be Gutierrez.

It's not one of the standard symptoms but could very well have been the start as his body was fighting it

But oh, PLEAASE let it be true!!!! Hulk back on track!

That’s terrible news for Perez right when he’s finally got a great car under him. I hope he shrugs it off quick, just a shame he’ll miss at least two races.

It seemed almost inevitable one of the drivers would get it at some point this season.

For an athlete of his age, it's not that different from regular flu. But still, get well etc of course.

Who's gonna replace him?

Yes, however positive test results can sometimes only come after several days or longer, need to wait until the markers in your system are high enough for the test to give a positive result.

Not necessarily, there are plenty stories of very healthy people online, those who run marathons often and with no underlying issues to end up not being able to run longer than 5 minutes before they're fully exhausted due to the damage it did to their lungs, and no guarantee that will heal either.

It would be really interesting to see what Russell can do in the Racing Point, but I think neither Claire nor Stroll Sr would be too happy about that. :p

Given his age and fitness he'll probably be fine, but best of luck for his recovery regardless.

Hope the people he's been in contact with lately are OK.

However, if he caught it by flying back to Mexico, meeting all sorts of people and not socially distancing, that would be a gross breach of his responsibilities to his team, wouldn't it?

Seeing as he's now put the sport at risk of not being able to continue i.e, spreading it to the team and whatnot, it really should be punished.

10 day self-isolation in the UK, which would rule him out of both races

Obviously there are, as the virus has infected hundreds of millions. Any disease can have a devastating effect on a marginal number of people, it's not that different really. With the ongoing focus on covid-19, it just helps those unfortunate ones to get 'on air'.

Kinda had to laugh hearing he was in Mexico which - if I understand correctly - hasn't really gotten the virus under control, unlike most european countries. So why not spend the 2 weeks here?

Once you enter the Silverstone bubble you can only be at your accommodation or the track, no trips home, no jollies to Scotland or wherever.  Between Hungary & Silverstone, you can go home I believe.

Let’s hope he doesn’t die or suffer any lasting damage from thIs.

That said, a driver change, just like the mixed up calendar, is another wildcard to spice up this season.

Thinking out loud, I guess he buggered off to Mexico in fury after being told he’s out of the team next year.
