Tony Lanfranchi was BARC and BRDC/BRSCC saloon car champion of 1972-73 racing Soviet Moskvich entered by SATRA Motors. Then championships' rules were changed to engine capacity classes instead of price classes and Lanfranchi changed to different cars. SATRA Motors and various "privateers" were still using Moskvich cars in 1974 and then SATRA switched to Lada cars, "privateers" raced Miskviches in 1975-76. In 1977-80, I presume, only Ladas raced in Britain but I have little clues.

Here's list of races in which Moskvich and Lada cars could race. If known, starting numbers are given according to photos or entry lists in programmes.

Silverstone 11.06.1972

Second in class behind Tony Lanfranchi was another Moskvich driven by one Daniel Künzli. Künzli is a 100% Swiss name. Does anybody know anything about that man?

There were 4 Moskvitch 412s entered in the 1972 RAC Rally (all in class1).

Wenche Knudtzen/Eidis Huseby

Tony Lanfranchi/John McKerrell

Nicholas Price/Antoine Lurot

David Hood/John Grant

I recall servicing near Lanfranchi (Clocaenog Forest?) and noticing "Racing driver on major rally" syndrome - over active driver expecting to engage those around him in animated conversation instead of taking the opportunity to rest/close eyes for a bit -  and thinking he'll regret that lost opportunity later on.

Are you sure about the date?

There's no such a meeting neither in championship races lists at http://motorsportwin...mpionship-barc/ and http://motorsportwinners.com/defunct/production-saloon-car-championship-mcdbrdcbrscc/ no in Motor Sport 1973 April fixture list (https://media.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/april-1973/full/22.jpg).

There are two ways of writing marque's name in English: Moskvich and Moskvitch. The reason for difference is in original Russian pronouciation. We say "ch" as in "choose", not in "Christian". To define this "tch" is used for this. I don't know why SATRA used Moskvich name but you can see that "privateer" Knudtzen had a proper name on the body of his car.

My source is an original programme which I carefully filled in from the results in Motoring News. I can remember the Moskvitch rolling as it happened right in front of me at the chicane ! Perhaps Tim Murray could corroborate it through his MN collection ?

Thruxton 26/10/1975

45 Tony Stubbs Satra Motors Racing Lada 1200 1198 1st in class.

47 Peter Wallace Driver Moskvich 412 1478 Unplaced in class.

Both in class D Up to £1299.

A year on from my previous post and things seem to have rapidly changed. The classes which in 1974 were A Over £1600, B £1251-£1600, C £1000-1250 and D Up to £1000 are in 1975 A Over £2300, B £1700-£2300, C £1299-1700 and D Up to £1299. Was inflation really that bad ?

Plus you have to factor in the change from Purchase Tax to VAT and the changing VAT rates!

Wow Tim that's brilliant ! I couldn't remember the race being stopped and sure enough it wasn't, continuing while Tony Stubbs was hanging upside down in the middle of the chicane ! Inconceivable these days thankfully.

Regarding the interest rates, in this day and age of low interest rates and inflation it's easy to forget how high inflation was in the seventies.

I found another couple of programmes relating to the relevant period, first of all from the 30/10/1977 meeting at Thruxton. The Britax Production Saloon championship was now divided into capacity classes rather than the previous price classes and the only Lada/Moskvich entry in what was the smallest class (up to 1500cc) was 64, Roger Turner, Lada 1200 entered by Satra Motors Racing Team Lada. He wasn't in the first three in class.

The final programme I have is from Thruxton on 12/3/1978. With an entry half the size of the previous years final round, there were no Lada or Moskvich entries, the smallest class being a straight fight between Renault 5s and Honda Civics. Roger Turner was to race Ladas for many years notably in the Modified Production Saloon championship in the 1990s.

07.07.1973 Tour of Britain, Oulton Park 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41
08.07.1973 Tour of Britain, Brands Hatch 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41

I suspect Kvadrat may have this already, as the race/rally numbers are quoted in the original post, but according to a scan I have of the Oulton (I think) programme and entry list for the 1973 Tour, the Moskvich entries were:

32 Bill McGovern/Tony Stubbs (Kinson Motors, Birmingham)

33 Eric Horsfield/John McKerrill (Satra Motors)

34 Peter Jopp/Maxwell Boyd (Kinson Motors, Birmingham)

35 John Lyon/Mike Desmond (Satra Motors)

36 Tony Graham-Enoch/Tony Parry (Satra Motors)

38 Roger Baynham/Ernie Thomas (South Wales Auto Club)

39 Peter Ripley/Mike Knutton (Outwood Autos/Wakefield Albany Inn)

40 Gethin Jones/David Bradley (Gethin Jones)

41 David Bates/Roger Hinchcliffe (David Bates)

All Class D, up to £800- the only interloper being Mike Merrick's Mini 1000

The scan quality is pretty poor, so apologies for any misreadings of names.

I thought I used to have results for the event as well, but can't find them- there was a thread on the forum some years ago which gives a top 20 for 1973, but doesn't go far enough into the leaderboard to pick up the Moskviches! Can anyone fill in the gaps?

I think the lights are worth more than the cars!

I have owned TWO Ladas though. One the smallish hatch, the other the 4wd. Both 80s when they were sold here in Oz. Very basic but quite tough cars. Both my salesladie's trades. But for very little money and they got rid of old stockers,,though the Ladas did not race out the gate either.

Do you have an actual entry list for the '72 rally?  I was intrigued about this, having known John McKerrell a bit and looked up the e-wrc site.  It shows Lanfranchi finishing 67th, and beating Knudtzen, so the 'racing driver on major rally' syndrome doesn't seem to have kicked in!  Of course, knowing McKerrell, they probably took a short cut!

But no sign of the other two entries at all.  E-wrc is only as good as the stuff that gets put there and if you hold an official document, that would be more trustworthy!

My RAC entry records are compiled from several sources - MN, Programmes, entrants own lists from the RAC itself etc. Over the years I've been adding reg nos from photos etc. I've never been greatly interested in results, so they are not so extensive.

Obviously that means non-starters may not always be recorded. RAC results are greatly influenced by who has been off the road and for how long. Often in the old days more significant than overall speed and not obvious without individual stage times.

I have:

114 Knudsen DA36656

131 Lanfranchi HPC14K

137 Price

143 Hood

The late McKerrell set his legacy with me by extreme (unsuccessful) efforts to get the results of an LCAMC/ACSMC road rally changed by me as Clerk of Course and attempted bribery of my Sec of Meeting to do so. It was beyond a joke to have other competitors call me to say which section he would try to get changed by one minute and that they had passed his driver removing a broken rear damper on it....

OK, looking at e-wrc again, I see that #137 and #143 are absent from the entry list, as are some other numbers.  So your info is clearly more complete.

As for results being influenced by off road adventures etc, yes, of course, but isn't (wasn't) that all part of rallying?  No point being super fast if you end your rally in a ditch.  To finish first, first you must finish.

And you saw the worst of McKerrell, I fear.  I didn't really encounter him until he had taken up driving, although he was still capable of making a nuisance of himself.

Welsh Rally, May 1972:

#222 R. Birchhurst J. King, Moskvich 1478, registered UKG14G, Class 3

They were Moskvich-dealer Bob Birchhurst, from Cardiff, and Jim King in a Moskvich 412, described as works-entered, (Birch-Hurst in one source).
