Indycar Series Rounds 8 and 9 of ??: The Bommarito Automotive Group Race to MEGA Savings 250s

(Breathe in and take a moment to savour that name)

OK. The important thing to know is that practice is starting in a couple of hours (chronologically) and in Madison, Illinois (geographically). The final two oval races of this abnormal Indycar season will take place on the not-that-normal Gateway oval, with its one-and-a-quarter mile length, long straights and distinct corners (well, they’re both banked and they both go left, so how distinctive are they really). The venue, probably most famous for being the site of a Team Kool Green disaster in 1999 as Paul Tracy collided with Dario Franchitti, returned to the IndyCalendar in 2017 for a championship-defining turn as Josef Newgarden outmuscled teammate Simon Pagenaud (without taking him out) on a late restart. Last year was a nutty, caution-addled affair eventually won by Rahal non-entity Takuma Sato after he and Ed Carpenter rode their luck to the front on an alternate strategy. Newgarden completed his summer of mishaps with a last-lap collision with front-runner Santino Ferrucci, leading to some good-natured banter and pronouncements of lessons learn-- nah, they hate each other.

So when are we racing? Saturday and Sunday. Practice starts Friday at 4.30pm Eastern time, which is to say, really soon. Qualifying for both days is on Saturday at noon ET. Remarkably, Indycar has arranged it so both races start at the same hour, that being 3pm ET, roughly speaking. It’s all on NBC Sports, or indeed wherever else you get your high-quality Indianian open-wheel programming.

Who’s going to win? As always, unclear. You may have heard things about Scott Dixon but he in fact hasn’t won since round 3 on a Saturday long ago at Road America. He has however kept scoring points, which is more than you can say for his competitors, and as a result he has an 84 point lead over second place. So he might win. Or they might! That’s why we watch.

04CJ2029.jpg

Any personnel news? Special Ed’s behind the wheel of his own automobile, which means Conor’s in the Carlin car. Tony Kanaan is in for one last weekend before he ascends to his heavenly abode on his winged chariot, although who knows (I don’t), he might stick around for 2021. Fernando Alonso has gone back to Europe to do whatever it is he does. But this shouldn’t sadden us, because we have some Indycar oval racing at an hour that (almost) everyone can enjoy. So let’s.

The forecast I looked at seemed good. Not too hot, no rain.

Issues with the Lagos cable.
They are on the roof with fishing poles as we speak.

The remnants of Laura may play havoc with at least Saturday's race...  lets hope not.

Unfortunately New England gets to enjoy the remnants of tropical depression Laura early Saturday into early Sunday.  The forecast is 2 inches of rain in 24 hours.  We are in a moderate drought so I will not complain, the water table is pretty low so I know that my well and Lake Winnipesaukee could use it.  But it does ruin one of the last weekends of summer here, our end of summer holiday, Labor Day is one week away.  Our first frost just over a month away.

Needless to say Gateway should be nice and dry for both races.  I am very much looking for to the racing this weekend.  Between the IndyCar doubleheader at Gateway and F1 at Spa it doesn't get much better than this.  I fear that my liver will get over exercised this weekend!

Jp,... If Daytona is anything like it's been for the past 3-4 years (the plate races at least), when you finally go to bed, you'll be either:

a) Angry at what it's become;

b) Confused... because you'll already have slept most of your night in front of the TV.

Having just switched off from Spa after five minutes....this sentence soothes my soul. That said, hopefully not Dixie. As decent a guy and brilliant a driver as he is, the man is due some minor misfortune.

Just checking, I see the TV coverage (UK Sky) starts at 8, does anyone know what time we expect the race to actually start?

Thanks

Roll three D20 and that will give you the number of minutes past the hour the green flag drops.

I mean, you can pick a team, but not having any drivers in the $19 or $20 category sure muddles the middle.   :well:

Basically you have to pick Van Kalmthout and another $21 driver, a  mid tier and Scott Dixon.

What is the arcane formula for grid positions this time?

Quite simple.

Single car. Two green laps. Grid set by the fastest average.

Edit: Huh, no...

First lap qualifies you for the first race, second lap qualifies you for the second race. Interesting idea.

Bonjour y'all.

Cheers Risil for the OP. What a gift, another Indycar race with y'all and so soon. What a delight.

Got the 4 cards for your picks tonight. Check 'em:

A) The Chariot

ET-MA-07-the-chariot.jpg

Drive: The will to conquer, courage, victory

Light: The awakening of powers, the way ahead, searching and finding one's place in life

Shadow: Megalomania, insensivity, running against walls

B) 7 ov Cups

ET-CUPS-07.jpg

Drive: Delusion, desire, ecstasy, neutralized victory, illusionary success, lying error, promises unfilled, drunkeness, violence, selfish dissipation, deception in love and friendship, success often gained but not followed up.

Light: Realisation of false promises and hapless hopes, sobering

Shadow: Drunkeness of mind, getting lost in illusions, wrath, vanity

C) The Devil

ET-MA-15-The-Devil.jpg

Drive: The freedom of spirit, independence of mind, anarchy of science

Light: Independence, wilfulness, never accepting dogma, never bowing the head - 'Non servam': I don't serve!

Shadow: Darkness, loneliness, being misunderstood and an outcast

D) 3 ov Pentacles

ET-PENTACLES-03.jpg

Drive: Manifestation, understanding

Light: Progress, cristallisation, increase of substance,

Shadow: Sloppiness or neglect after a first gain was won, stop in the middle of work

See y'all later somewhere near Missouri. First off, got some ELMS to catch up on.
