WHERE: Mugello, right between the Tuscany hills, in Italy
WHEN: This weekend, from September 11 to 13th

WHY: This circuit is amazing

-----------------------------

31g13.png

The Monza Grand Prix was literally a breath of fresh air after a streak of dull races!

Besides its fans, Mercedes Dominance pretty much bored everyone out, but the new Party Mode rules apparently tightened up the field, expecially in Race Trim.

An erratic Pit Call by Mercedes during the Safety Car period (due to the Magnussen's Haas engine failure) helped the cause, as Hamilton was handed a 10 s Stop & Go penalty.

After a brief Safety Car period, racing resumed!

Leclerc's Fiat Punt...Ferrari overtook the two Alfa Romeos, before suffering a Massive Shunt into the Parabolica's tyrewall.

The monegasque driver pushed just too much a totally unbalanced car.

As a result, his race was over.

ferrari_leclerc_crash-820x300.jpg

A LONG Red Flag period allowed a Wide Hamilton to go pay a visit to the Stewards, discussing about the Controversial Penalty.

After a good old 30 minutes break, racing resumed with a STANDING START! (how epic was that?)

At the Restart, Pierre Gasly managed to put his Alpha Tauri nose ahead of Stroll's, who had a nightmare start but managed to recover with a great overtake on the outside of Lando Norris' McLaren in the Variante Ascari!

The lap after, Lewis Hamilton entered the Pit Lane to serve his Stop & Go Penalty.

Dead last, but he eventually managed to get to P7 while his formidable team-mate, Valtteri Bottas, was having a Nap around P5-ish.

Carlos Sainz managed to get past Stroll's Racing Point, and start his offensive against Pierre Gasly.

But the 3.8 seconds gap was hard to overcome: the spanish driver managed to get into the frenchmen's slipstream in the very last lap of the Race.

DRS Zone on the Rettifilo, but not close enough to overtake for P1.

Gasly mantained his position, and WON his first F1 race and the first french win in F1 after Olivier Panis.

The French Commentator loved it!

Welcome to Mugello!

This is a fascinating race-track between the beautiful hills of Tuscany.
It's literally between the hills, you can't see the racetrack till you arrive there at the Gate, it's quite crazy!

It's an old style track. You won't see tarmac there. Gravel & Grass everywhere, not huge runoffs.

Make a mistake here, and you'll be out of the race!

2452173_1442_mugello_circuit_1.jpg

Mugello's motto is: "Al Mugello non si dorme"

Wich literally translates into: "You don't sleep, at Mugello"

Yes!
Beacause in normal times, Fans all over the world gathers during the night on the Hills sourrounding the circuit & in the Paddock, and hang out till the morning!

And trust me, it's great fun!

A 5.245 Km Track, with a LONG Main straight (15 seconds of Full Throttle) and a CRAZY mid sector, with big elevation changes, fast chicanes and some high G-Force (5.0 or more) Neck Killers bends.

The most spectacular part of the circuit is "The Arrabbiate Corners".

From Turn 6 into Turn 9, that section of the circuit is set to be STUNNING, with 270 km/h minimum speed, full throttle corners & bends, that will put the Tyre & the neck of the drivers under Huge Stress.

Turn 15 is basically a Tigther Parabolica, slightly off cambered!

You have to maximize the exit speed in order to get DRS & pull of an overtaking move at the end of the long main straight.

At San Donato, everything can happen, expect some big moves there!

Ferrari will celebrate its 1000th GP at the Mugello this weekend!

Not a lot to celebrate this time around, but it's an important event anyway.

There will be 3000 Tifosi allowed in the main stands, and Ferrari will bring a New Livery for the GP, with a different tone of Red.

Inspired to the 1950's Ferrari!

I know that many in F1 threads pray for rain all the time, so here's a short story:

About 200 years ago, a monk called Baccaleo used to live in the Mugello valley. Shortly before dying, he asked to be buried in a field far from the village. Unfortunately for him, that field was chosen as the site for the new track in the 70s and the gravestone had to be moved. The first events at the circuit were all marred by rain, that's the reason why people talk about "Baccaleo's curse"

GO OLD MAN TAKE YOUR REVENGE

I'm looking forward to seeing drivers race on a circuit with natural deterrents. A weekend without having to listen to the words 'cutting', 'track limits', or 'gained an advantage'.

But yeah, Mugello is a motorbike circuit. With it's fast long corners it's going to be near impossible to follow closely behind other cars.

So in that aspect I don't expect a lot of action. But perhaps the ignorance of the track and the natural deterrents can throw up some surprises.

Great track but really bad for racing with formula cars. Hardly any place to overtake, last corner is so long & fast that car behind will loose massive amount of downforce and cant follow close enough. Turn 1 is basicly only overstaking spot, but car in front needs to make big mistake it to happen. Mid sector is full of medium/highpeed corners so basicly impossible to overtake there.

The pit straight is extremely long, so a well placed DRS zone could be very useful.

I might be alone in this, especially as I think the season has been somewhat boring. But I don't mind a track like this on the calendar. I like that there are a bit unique tracks. Which is why I wish there was more walls in Monaco again, and I don't mind a track like this either. I just wish it was due to special tracks, not because, well, it's basically how all races are these days.

Yup. The positive is that if a driver makes a mistake, it will cost them more than on many other tracks, maybe with the exception of the Moto GP Penalty lap corner.

Such new venues sometimes create difficulties in settling up the perfect car, as teams do not have last years’ data to use a build-up for realistical simulations. Here’s to a surprise or two in qualifying.
And yeah, grass and gravel. No more of Parabolica’s shenanigans here. If they can avoid milimetrically the Monaco walls, then they’ll adhere to track limits here too (especially if it’s damp). Greedy fellas will probably get a mouthful of snap oversteer, together with a respectable bag of sand in their radiators.

I think it will be a great race, I expect some drivers to not respect the track quite as much as they should, throwing at least some of the results a little towards not expected - Rain will wreak havoc.... Gasly for two in a row!!

This is the best replacement for missing Suzuka or Zandvoort this year. Real "driver's track", if you will (although I wish they raced on Grade 2 circuits as well; the more variety the better). Can't wait to see cars on track at FP1. Turns 6 through 9 are gonna be insane to watch. And the best of all, no damn a-mile-long tarmac run-off areas. You go off, you're out the game loser. Mwaa-ha-haa.

My unfinished fantasy circuit was supposed to have that run from Casanova to Arrabbiata 2, so it will be fun to actually watch F1 cars race here. Although I might have to keep my eyes closed from time to time. Casanova and Savelli will be utter madness in qualifying.

Slightly OT, but it might be worth mentioning that it's the final round of the F3 championship this weekend (F2 continues on though). I'm predicting a pretty manic couple of races from them.

Not OT at all.

I think it will be a much better race than many predict. The start-finish straight is long enough for some proper racing and I think there's going to be a lot of tyre degradation.

It's going to be very difficult for the teams and drivers to practice on Friday because I predict they will be trying to to save their Hard tyres for the race. 31°C on Sunday! Mediums and Softs will burn up after 2-3 hot laps.

Always interesting to see who gets up to speed the fastest. Looking forward to see how LH attacks the weekend after his Monza setback. Really hope Gasly can find another level after his victory. It will be brilliant seeing him roll out on Friday. McLaren too should be well suited. Williams won't be penalised by their draggy car and should mix it again with the lower midfield.

Very, very excited for the weekend. Qualifying will be a treat. I think Mercedes will surprise a few at just how quick they are through the sweepers.

The constant races week in, week out have begun to make me feel a little bedraggled. After Belgium I didn't even realise there was another race until I read last weeks preview thread on this forum. I am beginning to feel like I want another weekend back!

The excitement of a new for Formula One circuit should keep me going this week. I share the fears it probably won't be a brilliant race, and the track does not appear to favour cars as it does bikes, but a few laps round here is at least interesting by itself. :)

I disagree. The straight is long, sure, but it’ll be a proper challenge for cars to follow each other through the lap (esp. without a secondary DRS zone) to allow for an overtaking opportunity down the S/F line. This effectively is going to be similar to Suzuka, so not expecting much racing at all.

Also people predicted Armageddon at Barcelona and it ended up being an easy 1-stop with VET doing half the race on softs! Granted they already had a lot of data on Barcelona and none for Mugello, but I doubt it’ll be as bad as Silverstone 2 unless Pirelli’s tyres are an absolute disaster.

Good to hear it's going to be warm. I guess the quality of the racing will depend on how much of the corners in the middle/end of the lap end up being flat out, so that the field don't get too spread.

It's an extraordinary circuit and I wouldn't be surprised if we see drivers never go below 3rd or 4th gear. The long run to turn 1 should be very fun too.

Whilst we won't see lots of overtaking, I'm hopeful that the lack of tarmac run off will lead to disrupted running in qualifying and in the race. If any driver makes an error, there will surely be a safety car or VSC. Even a recovering car will bring loads of gravel onto the track.

Hopefully the cheese tyres will add to the unpredictability. DRS is going to be nuts, then any side by side overtaking or small mistake is going to be seriously wild off the fast racing line.

We might very well have another new winner. I'm gonna throw pennies down on Danny Ric for the podium.

Yep. Unfortunately there'll still be Lesmos-type shenanigans.

Has anyone heard a good reason why the white line was enforced exiting Parabolica & leading onto a straight,  but they only had to stay on the kerb exiting the Lesmos, leading onto a straight?

Fantastic OP Gamer!! Thank you! Looking forward to a new track. Alas, like Monaco qualifying will mean everything!
