I really enjoy this series and very happy for Tsuboi's first win. Great opportunity for Cassidy as well today. Proper oldschool circuit. What's not to love ?
Posted 27 September 2020 - 10:27
Agreed... that was a proper old school race - fascinating and absorbing.
The next one is on 18 October ..... they even have a properly spaced out calendar!
Posted 17 October 2020 - 11:38
Next race is tomorrow morning at (I think) 7am or 7:30am (BST) and its on The Race's youtube channel.

I adore these cars. Nick is still one of the very best drivers on the planet that somehow is not in an F1 car.
And cool to see Hirakawa have a strong season.
Also this track is cool as always. Nice one.

Those non-stabilized onboards looks awesome

Why Cassidy is still in the shadows is one of the great mysteries of the modern age, along with why anyone cares about the Kardashians.
Red Bull need a stronger #2. Why not Cassidy?
Alpha Tauri need someone to replace their inconsistent Russian. Why not Cassidy?
Haas needs a driver who doesn't throw it away every race. Why not Cassidy?
Alfa Romeo need a driver who...well, they just need a driver instead of a senior citizen and a token Italian. Why not Cassidy?
Mercedes needs someone to replace their flawed piece of Finnish software. Why not Cassidy?
Racing Point need a strong newcomer instead of a Ferrari cast-off or a family favourite. Why not Cassidy?
And then there is Indycar who need a new Kiwi to succeed their current but ageing one. Why not Cassidy?
Or maybe he is happy in Japan and really loves sushi and miso.

Cassidy will be in Formula E next year:

That is something, but it basically ends any hopes of anything better for Cassidy. There is no coming back from electric racing.

Rosenqvist went from Mahindra in FE to Ganassi in IndyCar, so no.

Cassidy is very fast... the series is very good. Cars look and sound nice, tracks are awesome. Thanks to THE RACE I have managed to enjoy several races.

As much as I don't want it to be true and I think Indycar deserves more respect, to me it seems like FE is still closer to an F1 drive than that Indycar

Its "live" on youtube for those of you who are awake...

Very fun race with interesting strategic battle. Super Formula feels like the F1 I loved as a kid and younger man, so I enjoy watching it tremendously.

The tires are a bit too predictable, so it's a chess match on if the over- or under-cut will work best at a given track. I'd like for things to be a bit less easy to guess, but the cars are pretty good, though could use some improvement on being less sensitive to turbulent wake.

I like that they go out on cold tyres. Adds a bit of unpredictability about the strategy.

Anybody up

A good win for the safety car in Round 5. Led more laps than anybody.
Posted 06 December 2020 - 14:26
Very emotional end to round 6. To me it seems four drivers with a chance to win the championship, which is amazing and very good for the sport. Rooting for Naoki.
Posted 07 December 2020 - 12:43
After Rd 6, the safety car driver must be in the running for the championship. Two races at Suzuka, probably 40% run under SC.

Yeah, I finally stumbled upon a live telecast this past weekend, and it then promptly dragged on under SC conditions for like an HOUR until I completely lost interest and turned the whole thing of...

Its not normally like that ...
Posted 07 December 2020 - 14:37
In fairness, the driving standard is usually higher as well. I've never seen anyone in such a high-level series make quite as bad a decision as going four-wide into Suzuka's turn one in open wheel cars in quite a long time.

Didnt wake up in time for the race but should be able to watch it here
Posted 20 December 2020 - 13:20
It was a good race and quite dramatic. I don't want to spoil the results for anyone, so I won't comment on them.

By the way, I have noticed that competitiors in this series and in Super GT (usually the same people) are quite emotional. Who would have known - Japanese drivers are a bit like Brazilians when experiencing victory and defeat. That's great to see, as I enjoy emotion in motorsport.

Yamamoto has to be considered amongst the true greats in Japanese motorsport now surely? 5 titles in all across Super Formula and Super GT, with two double championship wins in 2018 and 2020.
Nick Cassidy has been a great foil for him though, I kind of feel he's wasting himself a little bit by taking a seat in FE...

I guess he felt like he was never going to get the attention he felt he deserved in Japan, and since a factory drive from Toyota didn't materialize, there was nothing available as a step up in Japan...

I understand, its just a shame that he hasn't had better opportunities, he's pure class in both series. I guess the issue is that Super GT is still underrated where it counts in Europe...
I'm definitely more of a Super GT fan than Super Formula... SF could do with a tyre war.

I like both series - Super GT in Super Formula. Maybe the shorter open wheel races are more appealing to me.

Some races in Super Formula can be a little stale compared to Super GT. I like both, have been hooked on Japanese motorsport since Gran Turismo introduced me to it two decades ago, but the GT side is just better, for me its one of the world's best championships.
Super GT is massively underrated. And shows that a tire war can be somewhat managed this side of the decade. I think some other open wheel series that shall not be named should take note now that they are switching to 18" wheel rim....
