The call has been put in to Hulkenberg already

The Spanish TV commentators are suggesting (as an unconfirmed rumour) that he might have tested positive for Covid yesterday, and that they're going to make a new test to verify it... Hülkenberg might be (again) the replacement.

They just said that it's now confirmed that he won't make it to P3, and it's still to be seen if he'll be ready for Qualy.

You're not one of those dogs from Finland, are you? :)

There's a strict testing regimen in F1 that's a condition of the series being able to go ahead at all. Presumably it's being followed!

That doesn't make a lot of sense. If Stroll already tested positive for Covid yesterday then surely they would've done a confirmation test right away and already had Hulkenberg on stand-by and written in for FP3 instead of now having an empty car sitting in the garage.

I find it amusing how Hulk was saying earlier in the week how disappointed he was he wouldn’t get to race at this track.

From Chris Medland on Twitter:

Unsure on Hulkenberg's status in terms of Covid testing etc ahead of qualifying, but teams are allowed to replace a driver for that session (Williams did with di Resta and Massa in Hungary 2017). But as @PHortonF1 points out, there's another German driver here ready to go... #F1

Is Stoffel at the track?

e. As Merc’s reserve driver. I don’t mean I think he is German.

I thought about Mick as well but making your F1 debut without any practice would be madness.

Would be epic if Mick got his chance. But highly doubt the Schumacher family would allow it without him having the right preparation

If there is nobody to compete in qualifying I doubt the FIA would let then start the race without doing any kind of time in free practice.

Hypothetically speaking, should Hulkenberg seat be shipped in on time and should Hulk himself be able to travel to the Nurburgring in time with his suit.. is he eligible to drive? Or did he have to partake in FP3 for this to happen?

Yes you can't race without having done a practice session beforehand technically qualifying is seen as a practice session too so pressure is on racing point to make the right decision

@SMitchellF1

Hopefully Lance Stroll feels better and can drive. If not, will he be replaced? If Nico Hulkenberg's not around, he'd need to get to the track/pass a COVID-19 test in time. Whereas Mercedes reserve Stoffel Vandoorne is on site already:

Still my question remains.. is it possible to put a driver in the seat for the qualifying and race race who didn't partake in FP3?

Yes, you can jump straight in for qualifying without doing any practice. But without both practice and qualifying a driver wouldn't be allowed to race I think.

Yeah, if they put in a guy with. K qualifying time and no free practise time to.demonstrate he can get within 107%< will the FIA let him drive in the race? Maybe Stroll or Hulkenberg, who've already driven this season, would get away with it...

Think stoffel is a certain stand in if lance can't race and Hulkenberg ain't at the track. Probably in Mercedes interest to get him a race just incase something goes wrong with Hamilton or Bottas during a race weekend coming up.

A seat fitting would be required for Stoffel and the seat hardening takes up to a couple of hours. And after that the seat has to be finished which are some hours of work also. So running in Lance's seat will be a tough deal.

As long as a rookie driver gets within the 107% limit in qualifying then they can race even without actual practice session beforehand.

Sometime a driver can't take part in qualifying because a problem with the race but they get away with it as long as they been within the times during practice for example.

Yes that's true!
But I'm sure with the racing point car being a Mercedes 19 copy stoffel seat might just fit

Hulkenberg was already expected to do some media outings for German television this afternoon. So he was already underway to the track.

They actually do. Certainly the autobahn in the Ruhr region are all limited. About 60% of all the German Autobahn are under a permanent speed limit.

So here comes the supersub again...

This time with no practice whatsoever in a very cold track it's gonna be pretty tricky. Assuming they can get all the burocracy done in time to get him into qualifying. At least he knows the track well and already knows the car too!

it depends, usually it's something between 90 and 130 kph, depending on how bad the roadworks are (which is pretty much always the reason for speed limits)

What is that limit?

Depends. City rings are usually 80kmh, rural areas are limited at 100kmh and outside those areas the limits are 130kmh.

And there are many stretches of Autobahn which used to be unlimited, that are now variable. An electronic sign posts the speed limit. For example the limits could be unlimited at night, during early morning traffic 100kmh and during the evening it can change to 130kmh.
I used to drive to Berlin multiple times per year from the Dutch border at Arnhem. A single trip of about 600km. Nowadays about 90% of the route is limited. Which used to be a lot less.
