It has been a weird year for all of us, and for Formula One as well. It's November, we're still racing in Europe, and we have no idea what 2021 will bring. Some things don't change, however – and one of them is the Silly Season Trophy, which opens today. It's a game in which you try to predict the teams and drivers of 2022, and this year's edition has the potential to be the most challenging one yet.

Some teams have already changed owners this year, and others are likely to follow. Some might not survive until 2022. Changes in technical regulations and engine suppliers might cause a few unexpected driver moves. Can you be the best at figuring out who moves where?

Previous winners:
2003: Brian O Flaherty
2004: Flying Panda
2005: lukywill, Viceroy, Makarias
2017: ANF
2018: Marklar
2019: TurnOffTheLights
2020: rodlamas

Participation:
To participate, post a reply in this topic with the drivers you think will be on the grid in the first Formula One Grand Prix of 2022. Be sure to follow the rules and please make sure there is no confusion as to which driver you mean.

Rules and point scoring:
The game will continue with the same scoring system as last year: unpopular picks are rewarded more if they turn out to be true. Early indications are that this is a good method for breaking ties.

  • 2 drivers per team. In case more drivers are provided, player only scores points for the first two listed.
  • 1 team per driver. In case a driver is placed into multiple teams, player only scores points for the first one mentioned.
  • 5 points for correctly guessing driver/team. You can earn up to 2 bonus points for each successful pick depending on how many people guessed that particular driver/team combination. This is calculated as 2*(1–(a/b)), where a is the amount of guesses with that driver/team combination among other participants and b is the amount of your opponents (i.e. total guesses minus one).
  • 2 points for correctly guessing driver (wrong team). You can earn up to 1 bonus point for each successful pick depending on how many people guessed that driver would participate. This is calculated as 1–(a/b), where a is the amount of guesses with that driver/team combination among other participants and b is the amount of your opponents (i.e. total guesses minus one).
  • On top of the regular bonus points, you get double points if the driver you guessed was mentioned by nobody else.
  • 0 points if driver doesn't compete. An exception is if the driver was supposed to participate but did not due to a temporary injury or temporary ban (e.g. in 2017 you would get 5 points for guessing either Ericsson, Giovinazzi or Wehrlein in the Sauber and 2 points for guessing them in any other team, but no points for guessing van der Garde in any team in 2015).
  • If you list less than 13 teams and there are less than 13 teams on the grid in 2022, you score points for the teams you left out (5 points per team).
  • You can list an unknown driver (no given name) in a team. You will then score 5 points if a driver that was not mentioned by any other entry drives in the team you put him/her in. You will score no points if an unknown driver drives in a different team.
  • In the event of a tie, the player putting the most drivers in the correct teams is given preferenceIf there is still a tie, the player who submitted his guess first is given preference (in case a post is edited, I will look at the time it was last edited, not the original submission time).
  • In case of an event unspecified by rules, SpaceHorseParty makes the final decision.

Deadline:
December 1, 2020, 00:00 (UTC)

Mercedes     Lewis Hamilton    Sergio Perez
Red Bull     Max Verstappen    George Russell
Ferrari      Charles Leclerc   Carlos Sainz
Aston Martin Sebastian Vettel  Lance Stroll
Alpine       Fernando Alonso   Pierre Gasly
McLaren      Daniel Ricciardo  Lando Norris
Alpha Tauri  Yuki Tsunoda      Christian Lundgaard
Alfa Romeo   Esteban Ocon      Robert Shwartzman
Haas         Mick Schumacher   Callum Ilott
Williams     Valtteri Bottas   Nicholas Latifi

The feeling when you think you're uniquely brilliant in placing Gasly at Alpine and then look at the previous entries.

Thankfully, the Covid-19 crisis has not caused any teams to pull out of Formula One (yet). However, we do have less players than usual – hopefully, for unrelated reasons and only temporarily.

Let's look at some statistics:

Drivers

10: Alonso, Gasly, Hamilton, Leclerc, Ricciardo, Sainz, Schumacher, Stroll, Tsunoda, Verstappen
9: Bottas, Mazepin, Norris, Russell, Shwartzman, Vettel
8: Latifi
7: Pérez
6: Albon
4: Giovinazzi, Lundgaard, Ocon
3: Raikkonen
2: Ilott, Pourchaire, unknown driver, Vips
1: Hülkenberg, Magnussen

9 out of 20 drivers on the 2021 grid are expected to continue, including Mick Schumacher, who will make his debut next year. The least likely 2021 drivers to line up the 2022 grid (according to the players of this game) are Räikkönen (three picks), Giovinazzi, and Ocon (four picks each). Of those, Räikkönen and Giovinazzi are almost entirely expected to stay at Alfa Romeo, while Ocon was assigned to three different teams – Alfa Romeo, Alpine, and Williams.

Pérez currently doesn't have a seat arranged for 2021, and it seems more and more likely he will have to sit out next year. However, seven players expect he will return (or still be here) in 2022. Hülkenberg and Magnussen, other potential returnees, were picked by one player each (rodlamas and KWSN - DSM, respectively).

The likeliest rookie is Yuki Tsunoda, picked by all ten players. Of course, he's linked to Red Bull teams: two players placed him in the main team, and eight placed him in AlphaTauri.

The only two unique picks were already mentioned – they're Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen. Should any of them appear on the 2022 grid, even in other teams, they will bring a lot of valuable points – they would bring 6 points for driving in a different team, which is more than a popular driver/team combo, like Gasly at Alpine, would bring.

Only two unknown picks were made, and both of them were for Williams. One was made by me (SpaceHorseParty), and theo ther was made by M2000-5.

Teams

Mercedes: Hamilton (10), Bottas (5), Russell (4), Pérez (1)
Red Bull: Verstappen (10), Pérez (3), Gasly, Tsunoda (2), Bottas, Magnussen, Russell (1)
McLaren: Ricciardo (10), Norris (9), Gasly (1)
Racing Point: Stroll (10), Vettel (9), Bottas (1)
Alpine: Alonso (10), Gasly (6), Lundgaard (2), Ocon, Pérez (1)
Ferrari: Leclerc, Sainz (10)
AlphaTauri: Tsunoda (8), Albon (5), Lundgaard, Vips (2), Gasly, Hülkenberg, Pourchaire (1)
Alfa Romeo: Shwartzman (7), Giovinazzi, Raikkonen, Schumacher (3), Ilott, Ocon, Pérez, Pourchaire (1)
Haas: Mazepin (9), Schumacher (7), Shwartzman (2), Giovinazzi, Ilott (1)
Williams: Latifi (8), Russell (4), Bottas, Ocon, unknown driver (2), Albon, Pérez (1)

There are seven things the players universally agreed on: Lewis Hamilton will stay at Mercedes, Max Verstappen will stay at Red Bull, Daniel Ricciardo will stay at McLaren, Lance Stroll will stay at Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso will stay at Alpine, and Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will stay at Ferrari. Pierre Gasly to Alpine (made by six players) and Alexander Albon to AlphaTauri (made by five players) are the most popular moves.

All players predict the current ten teams to line up the 2022 grid, with no new teams appearing or disappearing.

Average pick

Mercedes	Lewis Hamilton Valtteri Bottas
Red Bull	Max Verstappen Sergio Pérez
McLaren Daniel Ricciardo	Lando Norris
Aston Martin	Lance Stroll Sebastian Vettel
Alpine Fernando Alonso Pierre Gasly
Ferrari Charles Leclerc Carlos Sainz
AlphaTauri	Alexander Albon Yuki Tsunoda
Alfa Romeo	Antonio Giovinazzi	Robert Shwartzman
Haas Nikita Mazepin Mick Schumacher
Williams	Nicholas Latifi George Russell

This time, selecting the average pick was easier than ever – no compromises needed.

I calculated the results if the average pick comes true:

Place	Name Points	Exact Subm
	AVERAGE PICK 125.44 20
  1	rodlamas 119.33 19 3
  2	SpaceHorseParty 119.11 19 6
  3	DutchQuicksilver	110.78 17 1
  4	M2000-5 106.78 16 9
  5	sladealonso 102.33 16 2
  6	Marklar 100.89 15 10
  7	Makarias 95.11 14 7
  8	scheivlak 93.22 12 8
  9	f1paul 91.33 13 5
 10	KWSN - DSM 85.33 12 4

rodlamas and SpaceHorseParty were the closest to the average pick, KWSN - DSM the farthest.

There will be an interim results topic posted soon. Only 14 months to go until we get the final results for this game!

Sorry, I haven't found the time to publish any interim results yet. But I hope to do it soon – and there is still one seat up for grabs!
