I checked, I didn’t dream this, a few years back, F1 was going to be getting its own mascot, presumably in the style of Gunnersaurus of Arsenal FC. He or she was going to be called Axel and would “elevate the atmosphere of the F1 Festivals through edgy entertainment and impressive urban dance skills to engage with the audience. Axel will also have some gaming experience and will join guests on the various games around the Festival.”

Did Axel happen? Did you see Axel at any races? What is ‘edgy entertainment’?

Considering that Axel's anagram is Alex my only conclusion is that the mascot is driving the 2nd Red Bull now.

There was a picture online of Axel when he was at one of those festivals. He was seen together with that famous Dutch dj, van Berlo or whatever his name is.

Mascot? That small creature who made funny remarks? I think he retired. But you can still wear him:

They had some mascot types at Silverstone a couple years ago - they were in Gold Silver and Bronze disco ball type race suits.

They could've pushed the boat out a bit more than having their mascot look and dress exactly like the athletes only with additional F1 branding.

Multiple Axels! The plot thickens.

edit. disco ball type race suits? Is Axel really Dazzler, occasionally of The Uncanny X Men?

This cute thing:

The official Team Hesketh mascot, you can also see James Hunt wearing a t-shirt with it, just below
I think it's really cool. I am not aware of other team mascots.

Yes, 30 y.o. male and love teddy bears :)

oh yes, of course. It was adorable! And very appealing to a lot of people I should think.  I think from your initial description I was picturing a guy in a bear suit like Bungle from Rainbow so this is way better.

I wonder if that idea had come from the same marketing exec who gave multiple interviews mentioning the words 'greatest', 'racing' and 'spectacle' without understanding this:

I choose to believe he loved the robot, and was merely expressing his distaste at the abysmal plywood trophy.

Both Max and Lewis look kind of angry with it, like it has beaten them both on track but in a really underhanded cheat-y way.

Considering we are talking about Lord Hesketh, whose cars used to feature erotic magazine sponsorship, and James Hunt, a very well known playboy, I was expecting something more 'adult' about that bear :rotfl:

Elevate the atmosphere.....urban skills.....

OK...I am glad Axel/Axle didn't last long. He sounds rather embarrassing.

A mascot as such isn't necessarily a bad idea though. I vote for the Hesketh/Racing For Britain bear.

My awesome Hesketh bear coffee mug (I think the official/semi-official merch sellers are/were based at Donnington possibly...) had its handle fall off recently, as I was rinsing it under the tap. I used to have the most amazing mug ever, a James Hunt mug, lots of red in it (Mclaren era) and it was a full wrap-around design....and that died about 8 years ago in the exact same circumstances. James, of course, used to race for Hesketh. Very spooky!

(or this happens a lot to cheaply-made merch mugs)

It seems nobody really knows what happened to Axel.

Anyway let's not forget our one and only Mexican GP mascot, Mario Achi:

The drivers, Vettel in particular, were understandably not impressed  :D

I loved that.

'YOU ARE NOT A PART OF THIS' is the unmistakable message from the 4 time world champ. It was seeing pictures of this that reminded me about how there was going to be a mascot in the first place.
