The move has been triggered by the arrest on corruption charges of a key official responsible for the race in Hanoi.
Hanoi People's Committee chairman Nguyen Duc Chung was arrested in August for alleged appropriation of documents containing state secrets.

Well having played it in F1 2020 I can’t say I’m going to miss that terrible street circuit.

Quite remarkable. Wonder how much the guy arrested on alleged corruption and state secrets breaches had them paying to host the Grand Prix!?
Didn't expect all 23 races to happen at all, but didn't expect them to start falling off with a story like this.
No one in mainstream F1 really picked up on the organiser getting into hot water (back in August).

Potentially still 23 races if a replacement can be found? God, that's going to be a long, dull season with Merc's current dominance, isn't it?
Might as well get it out of the way already, congratulations to Lewis Hamilton on his 115+ victories.

The mainstream F1 media missing out on a story negative to F1? You amaze me.

Also, you'll soon be able to determine how long you've followed F1 for by recalling whichever race was announced for a certain season, only for it to never happen.
Remember the New York New Jersey and Miami races that were very definitely going to happen? They were fun. F1 doesn't exactly have a great recent hit-rate with new races, does it?

I can go back to Fuengirola...I saw the streets over which the GP was due to take place, it took about 0.2 seconds to determine they were having a giraffe.

well that was a waste of millions of dong and the race never happened lol epic fail and waste of time

The less street races, the better - Keep Monaco and Montreal, loose the rest and do not add any new.

Posted 10 November 2020 - 00:46
that's a shame because the layout of the Vietnamese track looked interesting, wanted to see a race on it

I bought the game, got to Vietnam in the career mode, couldn't hack it. Haven't played it since.

They’ve made up for the loss of race by adding a race for the guy that had someone dismembered in another country...

That last sector though! Woof!
Interesting as well, can this end up being a track that's been made for an official game, but that never gets used at all (even outside F1). That must be something unique?
I did look at some tickets for 2021, to find somewhere I thought had respectable prices coupled with views, and being somewhere I want to go. Good thing I didn't go for Vietnam (not that I have gone for anything, but I was very close to go for Vietnam)

I'm from Vietnam and I am actually relieved hearing this news. The organiser/promoter of this Grand Prix is Vingroup, the biggest corporate in Vietnam. Frankly speaking, the owner of Vingroup is a real estate mogul and a mafia. He does not understand a thing about motorsport and F1. What he wanted is quick fame. Things do not go his way? Of course he would quit. There won't be any commitment. When I heard of the Vietnam GP, I thought, well it might go like 3 years and then it will surely gone. Seems like it would come even earlier than my prediction.
I do not miss it.

This race should be boycotted. Really. There's no sport when dealing with a murderer.

Good shout.
Similarly, sort of, was how the Korean circuit was dipictied in the 2010 game ahead of them going there. Loads of trees & buildings instead of the empty, bleak mud-filled rice paddies that were actually there.
This is a crying shame for the people in Hanoi. I know corruption is nothing new, but what a waste of money and land. I wonder if the site will be repurposed for something else, or if it will be a niche motorsport-tourism-oddity for a decade. I await a segment in Drivetribe (et al) in a few years 'The Abandoned Circuit that never held a race'.

As MIami has been mentioned, this is always going to be the issue with temporary circuits racing in dodgy countries (like Vietnam and the USA, ho ho ho), that if there isn't a permanent circuit being built at huge cost to somebody, there's every chance it'll not happen.

I thought it was just me! I always have a couple of corners where I need a bit longer before I get them, but with Vietnam I just couldnt improve at all.

Why would Vietnam be interested in an F1 race? And why else would F1 even contemplate on going there? Money is the only thing F1 is interested in. Dirty money, lacking human rights (looking at you Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Azerbaidjan) or not, F1 hasnt got any morale when addin a Grand Prix to its calendar. But with Turkey, Azerbaidjan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia there is a logical explanation where the money might come from (oil). With Vietnam that has always been a grey area. Hence my suspicion.
Won't miss a second of sleep for this Grand Prix not happening.

Straight, roundabout, straight, roundabout, straight
Youre forgetting the squibbly zigzag part poorly imitates the Suzuka Esses and Maggots and Becketts.

Having raced it in F12020, it wasn't the worst circuit ever. I'd rather drive round there than Singapore or Monaco. The last section is certainly tough after the extremely long straight.
It has to be replaced or we have a full month between China and Barcelona. Portugal seems to me the best option with Spain it following a couple of weeks later.

I should mention from a libel point of view that according to the BBC article, the Vietnamese official has been arrested on suspicion of corruption but not convicted, and there's currently no suggestion that the Grand Prix is implicated in the charges.

Does the bonus track shaped like an F1 car in the first PS1 game count?

I highly doubt it'll be the last race that disappears from next year's calendar. Street circuits are presumably particularly vulnerable as it is much harder to bubble in a city.

Straight, roundabout, straight, roundabout, straight
So what?
Indianapolis is Straight, 90 left, Straight, 90 left, Straight, 90 left, Straight, 90 left, Straight.
Produces great racing.

Call me a sinner, but I have always liked the Korean Grand Prix.
The races were decent, but it quickly evaporated. Built in the wrong location, ridiculous sanctioning fee. Bernie sold them on the F1 equivalent of The Simpsons Monorail....

Mugello and Algarve say hi.
New, as in brand new circuits - not ones that have already existed for a long time.
But yes, this is further proof F1 should stop wasting its time on fugly street circuits in places where there's little interest in the sport, and just actually go to tracks where the cars are better suited instead.

I didn't like this track in F12020, although I'm not sure how representative that is because I actually like racing on the Sochi track in the game
The redeeming part of the track is the final sector. Nailing the esses at the end is a great feeling.
