They should just put horns on the car.  If you're pulling alongside another car, you've got to honk the horn.  1 honk for on the left, two for on the right.  And the car in front should have a turn indicator if they are deviating from the racing line.

Really... unless you know for sure there is no one alongside you you don't violently swerve across the track. No rear view mirror is going to solve that.

Yeah, but the age-old argument of "we've always had it this way and it's never been a problem - and it's not really a problem now - so no need to change anything" will just be rolled out.

I fail to understand what all this fuss is about.  Motorcycle racers don't have mirrors and they don't make a point to looking behind them during a race.  Making moves like Grosjean did on Sunday is likely to cause serious problems for everyone on track, as we saw in the MotoGP race in Austria earlier in the year, when Rossi was nearly decapitated.  There's been discussion on bikes having mirrors or cameras, riders are told to avoid being prats.

I think the point is that you can tell them to not behave like prats, but when they do, you have to start thinking about why and how you can stop them from behaving like prats. Of course, getting them to behave has to be the best option, but how can that be achieved? Do you simply ask them and hope that they will or do you have to do something more intrusive? That's the debate.

Road cars have started to move to camera based side/wing mirrors there is no reason for F1 not to do the same and lead the way. All F1 cars have the roll hoop mounted car cameras for many years now and this could be utlised to provide rearward camera, with either:

1 wide angled rear camera

2 cameras left/right

3 cameras left/center/right

View screens for the rear cameras can be mounted in the cockpit behind the steering wheel. The added benefit of this since the rear cameras footage can be recorded is that there is no longer uncertainity of what can be seen by the driver at any given moment.

Maybe that's the reason why they have not done this yet. Everyone in F1 thrives on vaguery and uncertainty.
