Help!  I'm going round in circles trying to sort out the striping on the six cars that Alpine ran at Le Mans in 1966.  These are part of my 1/43rd set of every car that raced there that year - minus the Serenissima, of course!

I thought I had it all sorted but having sold one of my reliveried cars, I set out to replace it.  This involves changing the stripes and numbers on a 1/43rd scale diecast model, which at present carries #44.

This led me into Googling images of the cars at that race and there's where confusion sets in......

This is how my cars are liveried (once I replace the #44 model with #62.)

44 - single white stripe

45 - red stripe bordered by two white stripes

46 - two white stripes

47 - single yellow stripe

55 - red stripe bordered by two white stripes

62 - two white stripes

Now upon careful inspection of Google images, it appears that the two stripes on #46 were in fact, yellow not white.  On the basis that it may be that no two cars would have had similar stripes, I'm wondering if #45 had yellow bordering the red.  This seems to be confirmed by one or two model manufacturers although one must be careful because it's easy to look at a picture of an Alpine at Le Mans and mistake 1967 for 1966 or vice versa.

Is there anyone out there who can confirm or dispute any of the above?

If you look at "Alpine A210-24 Hueres Du Mans 1966" on youtube there are several shots that show car 45 with red stripe yellow borders.

Just checked Roy Smith's excellent Alpine history and there are several very clear colour photos showing:

# 44 - single white stripe

# 45 - red stripe bordered by two yellow stripes (this is very clear in the photo)

# 46 - two yellow stripes

# 45 - Red stripe bordered by two yellow stripes

# 62 - two white stripes

The book also shows a photo of #45  with a yellow roof claiming that it was the 12th place finisher. This is clearly from 1967 when the #45 car finished 13th. It appears that in 67 the Alpines did not have any stripes but colour coded roof bands.

Also checking Christian Moity's 3 vol set on Le Mans the photos confirm the above and include a colour photo of #47 with a single yellow stripe.

However ... there are photos of #45 and 46 that at first glance shows the yellow stripes as white which maybe where the confusion has arisen but looking closely it is clear that the yellow has bleached out of the photo and traces of yellow remain.

Interestingly in the Moity book it shows another Alpine # 56 as a non-starter but there is a photo of the start line-up with the car in the front of the other Alpines - it had a green stripe bordered by yellow !

I am sure you will have a photo posted hear soon from someone at the great race confirming #46 colouring.

Francois Hurel’s “Alpine au Mans 1963-1995” (Editions du Palmer” ) confirms all the above striping info. for the A210s # 44,45,46,47,62 & 55 and for the sole M64 #56 All cars entered by Societe Automobiles Alpine save the #44 Ecurie Savin-Calberson— giving publicity to the local transport company where all the Alpines were based during race week Final trivia point..unlike 1963,1964 and 1965 not one of the cars were road registered (imatriculee) but all had blank black “number plates”

Wrong year but still, just for fun I'll quote this from the Collectables forum:

...And the one for the 1967 Alpine-Renault A210, the very first model kit I ever designed, I was a puppy in this art form then...:

And the original issue of the kit:

Many, many thanks for the numerous replies to my question.  TNF succeeds yet again.

Three of the cars were already correct from when I first started this collection about 15 years ago, but the remaining three required various alterations.  I started after breakfast and finished at 15.45.

Bear in mind that all six of these cars started life as #44 but thanks to nail varnish remover, and rather a lot of patience, I now have these finished.  aaaaalpine.jpg

Now for the Serenissima.......... ):

Nail varnish remover.  Does it remove decals or does it dissolve them?  Do you have to keep it clear of the windows?  Does it affect the paint?  Even if you've resprayed with car paint?

For a start, I would never try it on a plastic car or one I have painted.  When I paint cars I usually use vinyl stripes and numbers which are easily removed if required.

On metal models I brush the nail varnish remover on and then use the brush to ease the decal off when it softens. Prolonged use of the nvr will dissolve the decal but leaves bits that require more application of nvr.  Never let it get near windscreens or windows.

As the proud owner of a Barry Boor original, I was going to see if you wanted your #62 car back Barry. However you were too quick for me and I see that the job is already done. Nice work.
