Back as a kid I always wanted the Tamiya kit of Klaus Niedzwiedz black & blue #53 D&W Capri. This unfortunately never happened. In the last few years I have been "driving" this car in the rFactor computer game. For some time i have planned to make a thread here asking about the original car, but haven't gotten around to it until now. As far as I know Niedzwiedz raced it in the 1980 DRM. Does any TNF'er know of any other venues it participated? I have noted that a Gr. 5 Capri have done the rounds in historic racing in the latter years, which leads me to wonder if the #53 Capri is still around? Is it in a museum, or is it a car we might come upon at a historic race once Covid-19 has been dealt with?

Some info on that car (ZAK-G5C-001/79 ?) here : https://www.racingsp...C-001__79#.html

There might be some more clues in this thread from a German forum : http://www.depaddock...ead.php?t=22296

At least it survived its current racing career as a "works" car, the last race was the ADAC-Bilstein Super Sprint Nurburgring 26.09.82 (2nd. O/A)

There's bound to be some Zakspeed anoraks around who would be able to reveal some more information. (?)

As the other 4 are quite forward:

001/78 Destroyed in 1980;

002/79 Stenger (01/83) -> Artcurial (2018) -> Schmersal and racing historics;

001/80 (002/80) at Mücke Classic;

001/81 at Zakspeed.

Klaus Ludwig drove one at Donington in 1980, winning easily from Guy Edwards. But his car was not in this colour scheme. Niedzwiedz finished 4th, presumably in the above car.

Klaus Ludwig was in 002/80https://www.racingsp...5C-002__80.html (1745cc Div.1)

I'm not able to find any photos from that event, but Niedzwiedz was most likely in his usual car (1427cc Div.2) when he came 4th, 1:13.770 behind Ludwig.

Hans Soldeck was his teammate at D&W Zakspeed Team with "001/78 (1400cc(?) Div.2) and came 10th, 3 laps behind.

I posted a poor quality shot from Donington, taken from the general enclosures, on my website a while back.

02/79 is now with Rüddel Racing rebuild back to Gr.5 specs.
01/81 was sold to New Zealand some time back.

Here's an article about the Zakspeed Gp.5 Capris, nothing about Niedzwiedz' in particular though : https://historicmoto...ed-capri-turbo/

PS. Ric Wood Motorsport have at least built one replica : https://ricwood.com/...rd-capri-build/

 One is still in the Zakspeed museum at least until last September.(or is it probably a replica or recreation?)

Actually the forum seems to be Belgian and is in the Dutch language. Perfect for me.

It gives enough information to identify almost all Capri Turbo cars used, so definitely worthwhile.

The forum doesn't seem to be too active these days though.

Yeah, but they mixed them up a bit. This one here must be the original Ertl-Capri, which won its first race in Zolder; the other Ertl win in '79 came with his new car which he got after the first two or three races. Toine Hezemans drove Ertl's "spare" at the Eifelrennen, then Dieter Quester at Salzburg, Walter Nussbaumer, Jochen Dauer, Klaus Niedzwiedz,Sigi Müller junior and Hans Soldeck until the end of the year - eight drivers in total, if I got that right.

So basically they are all accounted for, apart from 001/79. At least it does answer part of my question. The car does not participate in historic races, nor does it feature in an established museum. I do hope it still exist though.

I guess that means that the only one I'm likely to see run these days is 002/79. Maybe a trip to the Oldtimer GP at "The Ring" might be in order once Covid is a distant memory. At present, while spending way to much time in lockdown I will turn on my computer, run rFactor and select the DRM Capri #53.
