Anyone know of a good bookshop that deals in older second-hand motorsport books? I used to have a pretty good collection, but I unloaded the lot 2 years ago, something I now very much regret.

I need to stock up again. I know that the journalist Eoin Young used to have a mail-order operation that was pretty good. I bought a dozen or more volumes from him. But that was 10 years ago, and now, doing web searches, I'm drawing total blanks, no matter what search engine I use. The only motorsport bookshops/dealers I can find deal in new books only.

Any help appreciated, particularly with UK dealers. Thanks.

Tech,

I'm not sure this is what you had in mind, but try these two:

http://www.alibris.com
http://www.powells.com

Be aware that these are not motor sport-specific book dealers. I've purchased a few used Formula 1 books published in the '60s/'70s from the first site. Their ratings of the condition of the books are pretty accurate and the prices seem reasonable, even for 1st editions. I've never purchased anything from the second site, but a quick search of "formula 1" revealed 170 matches. They're both US sites, so your postage might be high. Now that I think about it, they may have links to similar UK-based sites.

Good luck. If you ever find a good motorsport dealer, let us know.

There are a couple of dealers who advertise in the classifieds in Motor Sport.
Here are some others :
Chris Knapman's, 167 Watling Street, Radlett, Hertfordshire.
Tel 01923 857870

John Knowles, Brick Kiln Farm, Hingham Road, Great Ellingham, Attleborough, Norfolk

There was also a man called Eric Thompson who was very good.

Brian Newbould, 62 Crossways Drive, Harrogate, North Yorks

I have also had good luck with Simon Lewis, here's the link for him. I've also found books through W.H. Smith and through Amazon UK although they go to people like Simon to fill orders.

Eoin Young has a website, can't recall the url. Never ordered from his catalogue or website, he's a bit pricey, you know...

I'll just add to the praise for Simon Lewis - excellent, well-stocked and reasonably priced. Good for mags, photos, autographs etc too!

Mucho thanks everyone. A great response. I've had a quick look at the various websites and it looks like Simon Lewis and Collectors Carbooks between them will get me started again. The Eoin Young site was very interesting, but it looks like he now specialises in very rare and expensive books only. I was surprised to see that Amazon lists some items I wanted with their "out of print" service. Also, as RY6 suggests, I'll get the next copy of Motor Sport and check the ads at the back of the mag.

Thanks again.

Autobooks Ltd in England is a good source, but does not have a web site that I know of.

E-mail Kenneth Ball at autobooks@autobooks.co.uk and ask him to send a catalogue. He does four catalogues a year.

But don't buy the books I want!

I have been buying from Autobooks since mid-1990 and have always received good service.

Sorry for the double post, but does anyone have a contact for Motor Book Postal Auctions in England?

I bought a lot of books from them many years ago but now can't find the address.
