Recently, Alonso has come out with this: https://f1i.com/news...Lewis Hamilton.

This had me re-checking 2005-2007 footage to see their respective battles. Alonso did have that huge falling out with Hamilton in 2007. But it looked to me as though they had put that behind and given way to mutual respect and admiration, so:

Can we take this at face value?

Or is Alonso starting to play politics for 2021 and beyond?

Is there anything else?

PD: By the way, if anyone knows of a good video or short documentary (with good car to pit comms) that goes over the 2007 battle at McLaren, I'd appreciate a link. Thanks!

I like this bit

"Michael never had such competition. He always won"

Well Fernando... it helps when your teammates are supporting cast quality with #2 contracts as opposed to World Champions...

I don't know the result...but I'm going to apply a theory to guess.

Alonso has raced both Hamilton and Schumacher.  He tied Hamilton as a team mate, never teamed with Schumacher but we remember the pass at Suzuka, the battle at Imola...and always Alonso came out on top.  Alonso ended the Schumacher/Ferrari era.  Thus Alonso has no choice but to put Schumacher ahead of Hamilton in order to elevate himself.

Schumacher had that "death grip" in his prime. He also have build team around himself.

Lewis takes it with talent, and relies on the team instead.

I can understand why he is saying that.
When he debuted in F1 and was making his first steps it was during the total domination of Michael, and by that time he had been by far the best driver for some 10 years.

It’s no wonder Alonso takes it as a special pride being able to beat Michael in more or less equal machinery and to finally stop his domination. It’s really the highlight of his whole career and a major one.

Besides, despite driving f1 till recently, he really is from that early 00s generation. He has always been fond of those cars and time as well.

Don’t see it as a dig at Lewis, just his opinion. And it’s not the first time he is talking highly of Michael anyways.

Not in 06 at Imola

I'll get me some popcorn

Otoh I think it says a lot about Schumacher's legacy that we are going to have the same (probably) heated discussion between Schumacher and Hamilton fans today as we were having how many years ago between Schumacher and Hill fans :) Diehard Schumacher fans are probably retired by now, so maybe not as heated back in ye goode olde times...

Alonso has always had an inflated opinion of himself, but he hasn't been doing a lot of beating anyone since 2006.  He certainly couldn't get past Petrov and needed help to beat Massa too.

There's a current TV advert with Ian Wright boasting about his past performances in football.  His family are showing laughing as they've heard it so many times before.  That's how I feel about Alonso.

Hamilton always seems to be a bit uncertain when things arent going his way. Always questions his tyres, last race as well. Always seems to be in the need for coaching. He has had this since the McLaren days. Mercedes does deliver him that and due to this, he extracts everything there is out of the whole package.

But that, in general, is the major difference to Schumacher, in my opinion. Schumacher never needed pampering. He was always highly motivated and, to my recollection, hardly ever questioned the teams decisions.

It doesnt make what Hamilton does less. It just is a different approach. But to my opinion, that is why Schumacher will always be the better of the two, to me.

Not really. His trouble was with Ron Dennis / the team.
