"I think it's stupid that there's an appeal that goes on for four months"

Hooray, the real Jacques emerges!

Imagine Gil de Ferran.

You go from being out on the first lap to P2...

I have no idea how he got up to P2. The coverage of this race was not great. Not Nazareth 1995 bad, but still.

I think the guy who uploaded this one cut out all the yellow flag running and most of the adverts. The race actually ran for 1 hour 46 minutes. I wonder if we missed some laps in the middle as well when it switched to PJ Vision on ESPN2.

I think the recording may have missed a bit.

I don't have much Youtube of the Vancouver street circuit from 1995, but in case you want to get familiar with the layout, here's an onboard with Michael Andretti from the 1990 race. I believe the layout remained the same till 1998, which was run on an almost completely different set of roads.

(Does anyone else find that patch of sky blue on Andretti's Lola's nose really ugly and out of place?)

That turn 1 chicane feels ugly and out of place. Certainly had been improved by 1995 with the fast sweep I'm more familiar with.

Something looks weird about the final corner too. Not the tight hairpin I remember.

Refresh me on Nazareth 1995. Couldn't have been worse than Nazareth 1991, where they were so committed to covering a "duel", they nearly missed the actual leader taking the checkered flag. They just barely caught it.

I mentioned it at the time, the broadcast team seemed to lose track of the race strategies about halfway through, and they'd drafted in Mario Andretti to provide colour commentary, which didn't work at all. For some reason CBS covered the race, with the remaining 16 races of the season broadcast on ABC/ESPN.

1991 sounds worse though! IIRC that was a Luyendyk win on a different fuel strategy. Those are tricky races admittedly, as you have to keep track of two races simultaneously, the "A" strategy and the "B" strategy.

In double checking video, my usually good memory has let me down. They did pick up Luyendyk, but not quite as late as I recalled (though I recall a similar instance, where they barely caught the winner just before the flag). And, of course, there was Luyendyk winning the infamous 1997 Texas IRL race, when few aside from Arie (and myself watching at home  ) seemed aware that he'd won. I had Arie leading, even if USAC, and the announcers...didn't.

By way of tying up loose ends, if anyone can enlighten me about what value ESPN saw in simultaneously broadcasting the race on ESPN2 with PJ Jones sitting alone in a booth identifying the cars as they drove round (at least, I think that's what his job was), I'd like to know.
