Re: Detroit

I'd like to think this is a cynical move by Penske to show the locals, who complain about the Belle Isle event, what REAL disruption looks like.

I have to disagree.

IMO, the city will welcome the disruption because of the economic boost it will bring that Belle Isle could never generate.

Also note that in the immediate area are stadiums for 3 major league sport teams so the downtown area is used to accomodating large numbers of poeple. For instance, the Detriot Lions play 8 games downtown with approx 50K people attending each game. Then there is the Woodward Cruise (well worth googling just for muscle car porn!), and St Patrick's day parade.

Hmmmmmmmmm

People who were attending the race on Bell Isle weren't spending money, or weren't spending it in Detroit? Or new fans are going to attend the downtown race and spend money? Or people are going to come in from the suburbs to spend money? or?

This is the standard spiel for any proposed event.  It is based on the scientific principle of 'pick a number, any number' and is impossible to dispute since nobody has any data.  Every Olympic Games claims that, despite all the massive cost of stadia etc, it will bring in $X billion in revenue.  It never does as Montreal, Sydney, Athens and others can attest.  These sort of marquee events are vanity projects for politicians who can claim huge benefits, bask in the glory of the event, but are then out of office when the financial accounts actually hit the fan.

Another way to read that is “no way I’m going to F1 if it’s just a renamed Sauber and ride around in the back.”

That’s great if you wanna watch Punky Brewster but I don’t expect you’ll see much sport if any at all. It’ll stay on SkySports… obviously.

And, speaking of McLaren, JPM reminds you that just 86 days remain to the green flag in St. Pete.
