20 years ago today, I launched OldRacingCars.com. From modest and ill-thought-out ambitions, it now covers in one form or another 8,500 cars, 10,500 races at 1,100 locations, 14,000 drivers - 3,000 of whom are on 'Where Are They Now' - and includes 5,500 photographs and an estimated 2,000 spelling mistakes and otehr typographical errors. I am very grateful to Richard Jenkins, Chris Townsend, and the late David McKinney in particular for their vast contributions, but also all the hundreds of others who have contributed information and allowed me to use their photographs.
I will admit that it's not always easy to find your way around in there. I have tried to impose structure, but the site has a way of fighting back. There are pages that Google has somehow discovered that I had not intentionally published, and there are some corners that are half forgotten and very neglected. But there is a strange joy in googling a subject and being directed to page you wrote 12 years ago and have no recollection of writing!
When I started this, Doug Nye counselled me that the scope was too broad and that I would never finish. Finish?, I said. Why would I ever want to finish?
He was right. I probably won't.
