Brian Shead has passed away after being ill for some time.   A great contributor to motor sport in many facets.

I did know him, of course, and saw him building and racing his cars over a number of years...

They were among the neatest of designs and his fabrications skills couldn't be questioned.

A quietly-spoken man who got on the with job in a most efficient manner, he also won the heart of one of the best assistants the ARDC had working for them on race days and took her back to Melbourne with him.

When racing in the F3 era at Amaroo Park, he and Brian Sampson ran as a team with Peter Macrow in a third car tagging along. They were rarely beaten. As the single-cam F2 began there was more competition and John Smith threw some spanners in the works in the Galloway, as did John Bowe a little later driving an Elfin.

It must be remembered, too, that Peter Macrow was a winner meeting after meeting in the tube-frame Cheetah in the mid-sixties.

RIP Brian Shead. Attached pic of him in the Mk 6 Cheetah with Peter Macrow in same alongside. Brian and Brian Sampson pretty much dominated F2 in the late 70's. Uncle of F Ford constructor Mike Borland. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

The nicest cars he built, just little gems...

And I see there's one of his Clubmans in the background, though built outside his workshop.

Looking at that photo of the Mk 6, Lindsay, I notice something I'd either not seen before or simply forgotten...

There is an extension to the sidepod going back over the rear suspension. I see by checking other photos that on the other side it incorporated (or ducted air to) an oil cooler. You'll note that Peter Macrow's car doesn't have this.

Additionally, we can't absolutely eliminate the Mk 5s and Mk 6s from the 'tube framed' category as they had a simple tube framing through the cockpit area which relied on sheet aluminium to give it sufficient strength. At first it was a skinny car (as seen in the car in the background on the side of the track in the Auto Action pic - and I just can't remember whose car that was) but later the sidepods were added.

Prendergast's car raced on for quite a while without sidepods.

Perhaps you'd broaden your quest into a more productive area by posting in this thread:

And if you have pics of the car, perhaps posting them might help...

I spoke to Peter two years ago for an Auto Action piece on the Cheetah Mk6, he was sharp as a tack and working in the family 'shop, as always!
