Many TNFers will recall that Citroen produced some special rally versions of the DS/ID series, during the late sixties and early seventies. Some were shorter than standard, in both length and wheelbase, and had only two doors. There seem to have been two variants of this scheme, one with the hindquarters just like the saloon, another with something like the SM’s roof and rear grafted on.

Information on these specials is scrappy, as far as I can tell, but it seems reasonable to assume that engine modifications were also made, along with suspension, transmission and so on. There appears to have been at least one with the SM’s Maserati V6 engine, but those with the 1911cc four were probably anything but standard.

Can anyone point me towards sources of information on these cars? English language would be preferable, but even French language sources would serve, at least the illustrations would be comprehensible.

The French "Forum Auto" has featured those cars. I believe there were entries in the Coupe des Alpes and other events that included a Group 6 category. Clearly they were not homologated within the usual class structure for most rallies so not eligible. Under the new Appendix J for 1966, International Rallies initially ran categories/classes for Gp1/2/3 only (Gp3 being a GP1 for GT cars rather than the previous Gp3 that catered for highly modified saloons as well as GT). Gp4 and GP5/6 classes then began to appear in event regs. Those Citroens were obviously Gp6 "prototypes" and I believe the Coupe des Alpes catered for Gp6 to its effective end (1973?).

There's some info in the following links, mostly on the Gp.5 SMs, The prototype being a modified SWB DS. (One of the two rally cars proper survives)

Peter Dalkin of Perdal and Wingrove Motors (Citroen dealers in Newcastle) ran a shortened DS on northern road rallies in period. Perdal did quite a few unusual conversions mainly of Fords, like the Anglia with the reversed window "reversed".

Two books which might be of some help, both published by ETAI.

IIRC the rally DS , or maybe SM had carbon fibre wheels - sounds like the sort of thing Citroen would go for.
