McLaren believes that Daniel Ricciardo’s struggles with its 2021 machine should have a positive impact on its new Formula 1 car given it highlighted characteristics that might not have been explored in the same depth otherwise.

This sounds reasonable to me. More specifically:

“Some of these features [that need to be improved] have to do with how sharp the car is when it responds to a small steering input,” said Stella.

“With the wide tyres, the first time we put them on in 2017, it was very clear that it was super responsive to small steering input. And this can be a good feature, if you have a 90-degree quick corner, it is a good feature. But most of the time that makes the car more difficult to drive.

“So once we understood, then it’s what to do then with the consistency of aerodynamics through the corners. And we understand that from this point of view, there’s work to do on our side.

Every cloud has a silver lining, I guess. This should make the 2022 car better for both drivers.

I think the regulations would prevent that.

btw, here's the full thread from Scarbs:

Regarding potential benefits, he suggests:

Alfa Tauri with pull rod plus Honda Logo on its wing,… Huumm true or untrue? April fool us too far away.

And the mention of the MP4-28 made me shudder.  The team never did figure that car out.

It is the number '28' that was the problem.  The McLaren M28 was also a dud, described by its drivers as 'a disaster' and 'a shitbox'  (Not that the M29 and M30 were any better!)

Was thinking about front sus loophole. Reno had this Mass Dumper, it had FRIC, merc had the last year on front that front wheel alignment system obviously which was banned. The front end dev with pull rods might have special trick.

Not disclosing double diffuser, does anybody know the reg throughout If the Venturi tunnel is hermetic in the reg book ?

Sort of S duct behind the Venturi,,,

Yeah Dan has come from different cars including the Red Bull that was a fast, more predictable and consistent car. He has reference points from different cars whereas Lando has only ever driver the quirky McLaren. Hopefully as the team mentions those reference points that may otherwise not have been explored will help make for a much better car that can compete at the sharp end at many more tracks this year and beyond.

Man its going to be torture waiting till Bahrain!

McLaren 'very satisfied' with how 2022 car is developing

"From my point of view, I am very satisfied with the development I see at the moment," Seidl explained.

"The car is responding to the developments. We are really making progress week-by-week in the wind tunnel. How much it will be worth in the end, we will only really see at the first qualifying in Bahrain next year."

Hopefully that reality is us back up the pointy end taking it to Merc, RBR and Ferrari.  :D

Hopefully indeed. I'm optimistic for this season... after the last few years, there is finally... hope.

Yeah especially with Seidl and Brown at the helm. Seidl knows how to get things done and run a successful team. Can't underestimate his value to the team.

Audi and Porsche set to join F1 in 2026, powering McLaren and Red Bull
https://www.carmagaz...ar-for-mclaren/

Slightly amusing that this update has received no responses despite being the key piece of news on the "McLaren Team" thread!

Have to say this story is sounding more and more plausible - backed up by some fairly trustworthy reporting elsewhere that talks are advanced. And that VWG have positively not denied the thrust of it. I'm at the "has legs" stage now...

I think hypothetically this deal would leave McLaren where Ferrari is with their parent group owners. McLaren would retain their identity and largely their autonomy. Casual F1 followers would not know the difference.

An Audi works engine deal sounds good especially as it would be the same PU ran by RB (albeit badged Porsche), thrown in Red Bulls acquired Honda capabilities and I can't see this plan going quite as pear-shapped as the last works effort...

It's being discussed and debated exhaustively on its own thread, so do we need to repeat all that here too?  Just because Abu Dhabi was discussed on seven different threads doesn't mean it was a good precedent!

Yeah fair enough and I'm aware of that but the specific thread is more general and not focussed on the implications specifically for McLaren. It's also essentially a rumour thread.

This appears to be moving from a punt of a rumour to something more significant.

I would have thought with Seidl's Porsche connection McLaren might have been given the nod but I guess it doesn't matter too much either way if the quality of the engine is the same or similar. IE just rebadged.

"Pitstops are much, much improved. Everything that we set out at the beginning of the season to continue to get towards the front, we've hit every single one of those KPIs that we set out other than the constructors' championship.

"I think we need to look back on the year and see it as a very successful year and continue to build on that on our journey to hopefully get back to competing for the world championship in a few years' time."

I think this is very good news - so hopefully some 'tougher' targets can be set for 2022.

I think the pitstops could still be improved. yes we had some fast times over the course of the year, but I believe (I could be wrong), on average we were still pretty low down the pecking order

So much more time to be found in the car first though.

They do seem to work well together.
