The Toyota Racing Series (which is technically a regional F3 series now) starts this weekend and Asian F3 begins next week, so it's probably a good idea to create a separate thread for these series to avoid the confusion with FIA F3.

It is also worth mentioning that the Formula Renault Eurocup merges with the Formula Regional Europe championship this year after spending two seasons being direct competitiors of each other (using the same car in the same region), which means Alpine will become the official engine supplier of the European regional series.

Most of these championships are using the Tatuus F.3 T-138 chassis, to avoid confusion, this car is based on a separate ruleset (regional Formula 3), it is neither the new nor the old F3 specification, it is somewhere between an F4 and an "old" F3 in terms of downforce and performance.

The exceptions are the American series which uses the Ligier JS F3:

f3-americas-hpd-scholarship-2019.jpg

And the Japanese championship using the Dome F111/3:

I feel sad looking at the British F3 website. Only four drivers are signed up for 2021 at the moment.

Is that normal for this time of year?

I haven't followed British F3 properly for a long time now, mostly because it seemed to follow the path of lower-level single-seater confusion. Like....the current British F3 is what used to be British F4, right? Except British F4 still exists, or restarted after the old F4 became F3?

Wasn't Gerhard Berger supposed to be sorting all this sh!t out?

The only exception is the American series which uses the Ligier JS F3:

And the Japanese series that uses a Dome chassis. Mygale also developed a regional F3 car but it's not used anywhere I think.

And Dallara developed a car for Euroformula Open last year, didn't they?

But that's basically their last "old F3" model with a halo on top to comply with the latest FIA safety regs. I think it's called Dallara F320 and it isn't technically an F3 car anymore.

I see. The commentators made it sound like it was brand new...

I really enjoyed this "Kiwi all-stars" race, although there are a few absentees, Cassidy, Lawson and Armstrong are the obvious ones (Liam is there actually, but only as a driver coach), and then there are the former capable single seater drivers like Hartley or Bamber... So the grid could have been even bigger.

That's a simplified version... The cars are adaptations of the old F4 but nearer to regional F3 in performance. The racing has been good, the quality of driver also good, given there's no longer a British near-monopoly on F3 as there once was.

Even the names of the various series around the world are designed to confuse and obfuscate. There are meaningful terms such as British and F3, but other titles consist only of buzz words like formula and regional.

Wasn't Gerhard Berger supposed to be sorting all this sh!t out?

Er, yes, but he seemed focused entirely on keeping the doomed Dallara-based European F3 going. Might as well have insisted on 500cc Coopers.

I didn't want to spoil the fun for anybody, but man, SvG is such a legend!  What a drive that was yesterday. These are the drivers I can respect the most. Throw them in any car or situation, they'll deliver pure awesomeness! Also, much better racing than last year in general with the new car. I guess it's because most of these pilots have close to zero experience with it.

Asian F3 starts this weekend with a decent 23 car field at Dubai, including F2 regulars Guanyu Zhou, Jehan Daruvala and Roy Nissany, also everyone's new favorite driver, Alessio Deledda. They will be joined by a few hopeful young guns from FIA F3 like Pierre-Louis Chovet, Roman Stanek or Red Bull's new signing, Ayumu Iwasa. And we have two female drivers with W Series rookie Ira Sidorkova and Amna Al Qubaisi (the latter will share her driving duties with her dad). I updated the grid in the OP.

I see Deledda's team have signed Matthias Lüthen, the one driver that actually made Deledda look fast (on track, anyway) in the past...

After watching the Dubai race 1, I still think this car has too much downforce compared to its power. Following each other closely is probably even harder than in the classic Dallara F3. Nice Trulli train from Nissany there.

Good job for her first single seater event.

And the constant spelling mitskaes on the graphics.

Racing is dull as dishwater, even now where there's little interest elsewhere. The track also appears to have little in the way of deep braking zones, which doesn't help. Impressed with the Hadjar and Beganovic keeping up with vastly more experienced guys around them. Interestingly Iwasa is the only driver who won anything last year (French F4 champion).

Here's a closer look at the start incident in race 3 (or what could be seen of it before the director cut away):
Looks like Maini couldn't get the car stopped. To avoid running into his teammate he dived between Faria and Daruvala.
Faria couldn't get the car stopped and ran into the back of Zhou's left rear, damaging the suspension. Zhou was almost spun around but saved it.
The Faria/Maini sandwich made contact with Daruvala who probably spun before he rejoined near the back of the field. After a good recovery drive he finished 7th.

One is Alonso, the other one is a wild surprise.... :smoking:

Btw is it true that Petecof had to leave the FDA because he refused to let the little Leclerc brother win? I've read interesting discussions about this in social media.

Honestly, I don't know, I think I've read somewhere that he was already struggling with the FREC budget, so I presume he simply doesn't have the backing to step up to FIA F3 (with Ferrari), I think various former drivers mentioned that the FDA didn't provide financial support for them.

Well, I watched every FREC race last season and I can't think of any incident where it looked like Petecof disobeyed any team orders to let Leclerc win. But what do I know?
I mean, Leclerc would have won the title had it not been for that silly driver error in the final race.

Camera and direction are the worst I have ever seen.

However,

I MUST say....

The lead commentator is hysterical

DYNAMITE DINO !

I mean really OTT

Who is this guy and what game show did they get him from?

Then the droll color commentator from the sub-continent chips in to add some chilled out observation

And he attempts to go all DYNAMITE DINO !!

It almost makes this boring formula almost watchable.
