One of the things I used to really anticipate in "the old days" was how the driver's helmet design was going to carry over to a new team. Like "Hm... wonder what Schumacher's lid will look like in a Ferrari? How will Hill's accommodate the yellow Jordan halo? How will Hamilton's design look in a Mercedes?"
Sadly, drivers seem to redo their designs completely, totally killing the magic. Hell, these days drivers don't even need to change teams for that - every year (or race) is an excuse for a completely new design.
I know I sound like a bitter old mad dickering about the golden days, but it is genuinely a shame that drivers haven't figured out how their helmets are an extension of their personality, and are extremely powerful as a part of their own brand image.
You could paint a bus yellow with green and blue stripes and that's instant Senna. It really baffles me how no one has understood how powerful this can be. "Nah, screw my traditional design! I'll just do something completely different and put some coffee beans on this one. Then I'll just wrap it up like a Christmas present at the end of the year. Yeah, that'll be hysterical!"
I think I've ranted about this in the past, but I always imagine what a let-down it would have been if Senna had one day been hired by Ferrari, and then when it came to the launch date, he walked onto the stage wearing a red helmet with a prancing horse. That would just be so wrong.
But then again, maybe I just don't get it.
